My knives are getting smaller and stiffer

How timely! Just got this from Alan directly, and I love it :)

Very good selection there Tom. May I ask, which is the second knife down on the left? Looks like a Sharpfinger type of pattern, thought I'd bought all the Bark Rivers I need but not so sure....

A stainless (Sandvik) Bark River I like for food duties is the Blackwater Boot Knife, about 15.5cm/6" and of thinner stock than most of their stuff, they can be too thick for my tastes. Also their PSK knife is a really handy small knife but well credible, so too the Pro Scalpel Plus whose finger grooves ensure a safe grip in all weathers, this too is within 16cm.

Bark Rivers are not cheap, and I've had quality issues, but they have undeniable attractions. A cheaper alternative is Hess Knifeworks also in Michigan, I have ben delighted with their Caper knife in Burlmaple, carbon convexed, this makes really good firesticks, a tidy food knife and of course it will skin stuff 16.5cm, a great coat pocket or daybag knife for sure.

I have the same problem with small pocket fixed blades that I do with small slipjoints. It's not so much the size of the blade as the size of the handle. Unless the handle is of good size, I don't want it. The width of a palm is about right, in my case ~ 3 1/2". Anything smaller is uncomfortable to use.

Three-finger grips need not apply.

I have huge paws, and while I carry a single blade Huck Finn boys knife and a Remington peanut every day, a comparable sized fixed blade is not for me. The smallest traditional knife I carry is the small Hackman Tapio Wirkalla pukko. The original sheath is rotting apart, I am getting a Skookum style sheath from Scott Gossman for it. It is a great knife either in a coat pocket or under your coat/vest etc in colder weather. Unobtrusive too.

Let's keep it Traditional, folks. Screw construction, especially like the one above doesn't make the cut.

Sorry about that. I thought that it would be OK being a fixed blade.

I put the handle on myself. It is a JK tin knife I won in a GAW on the JK handmade knife forums. It's made flat to fit in a survival tin and I made the scales removable so I could do that if I wanted.

Where are the leather pocket sheaths in the bottom row from?

Boker PSK is my personal fixed-blade pocket companion (about 2.5" blade). I don't carry it regularly, but when I wear a fixed blade in town this is usually it (or a BK14). When in the outdoors it's a BK2 on the belt in kydex sheath.

I was not happy with the handle of the pocket puukko I had started to make, the handle was just too chubby. So I shaped the handle again and found that the handle was badly cracked. Decided to throw the thing away.

Then I took the Hultafors chisel-tip knife I had bought from hardware store. The handle is light yellow plastic, blade is carbon steel and yeasy to sharpen. I cut down and sanded the handle to shape. It is still chubby, but gives a good grip. This is not pretty, but at least it looks like something I could really use. Pictures coming. The plastic sheath I discarded, I will make a simple leather pocket sheath.

And I also ordered an Enzo necker (scandi grind) kit with curly birch handle scale material. Rest assured that I will have to ask for instructions also here. I will make a pinned and glued handle to it so it will be suitable for display on traditional forum.

They are from a Jason a friend of mine.. He has a rather large knife dealership in Wisconsin. I 'll send you a PM, he isn't listed on this forum.

EDIT: I looked and see that I can't send you a PM or email. If you update your profile, I'll send you a PM. I don't send emails out to people I don't know as my email addy shows up with them.

I'd been hankering after one of these for a while. It's Andy Roy's Fiddleback Hiking Buddy.

Andy puts a convex edge on a lot of his knives, much like Bark River. This one is ground from 3/32 stock so nice and thin:)

I've taken to carrying it in this pocket knife sheath for now. If I could carry a fixed blade legally here this one wouldn't leave my pocket!

Here here :)

I enjoy folding knives a lot for their history, quality, and fun not to mention convenience but I like a small fixed blade just fine, "better" is not a word you can use really, situation and person specific, but I imagine I would be able to give up all fold knife easier then my fixed.

I got the Enzo necker today. The knife is fine, scary sharp and well finished. Now I have to start the assembly, wish me luck. Also I need to make a sheath.
