My knives are way too cool to use!

Heck yeah. Anyone who doesn't agree must not have cool knives. :D

In addition to too cool, mine are also too numerous to use. ;) Some are too valuable, some are impractical, too rare, too irreplaceable... But most simply just aren't needed.

I think users are cooler than safe queens, and I buy accordingly. I like seeing wear build up over time. That is character.

I wonder. What is the ratio of users to collectors here on BF?

I confess. I do have one unused knife. I even sneak it into bed. (I know).

Heavily in favor of users, I suppose. Even if a higher percentage of non-users exists than is willing to admit to it, I suspect they don't 'fess up just to avoid the stigma. I've even seen some makers and manufacturers say you've got no reason to live if you don't use your knives. Funny thing is, one of the makers who does that probably has the highest population of collectors on this entire forum. But such is life . . . :)

Yeah, OK, some knives are works of art, but then their "use" is in being admired. And others are practically use-less while being common. My Gerber Mk II: double edged dagger has no use in my non-spec-ops profession. But does this really apply to a Spyderco folder?

No, your knives are not too cool to use. They're mass produced tools. Your hammer, screwdriver, and pliers aren't too cool to use either.
The vast majority of one-of-a-kind custom knives are not too cool to use either.
These are not Faberge eggs that will crack into tiny pieces if you fart near them the wrong way. They're quality tools designed to give years and years of use.
Rubbing them down, like other forms of knifesturbating, might make you feel good, but is in no way necessary.
Feel free to idolize them and fetishize them all you like; no one here will tell you it's silly to do so.

That's just ridiculous, for someone on the forum to suggest that a knife is nothing more than a tool and is no different than a hammer or a screw driver. I don't visit website dedicated to the discussion of hammers and screw drivers. Nor do I put a lot of though it buying them, or research them online.

I really don't believe you actually think that, because if you did, you would not be on a forum, discussing and reading about knives. To collectors, a knife is part tool, part toy and part work of art.

Frankly I do have a few knifes that are too cool to use, at least use heavy. My ZT 801CF comes to mind. I have plenty of quality knives for utility purposes and don't mind messing them up. Heck, sometimes use even adds character. But I don't mind having a few I keep just to admire for their beauty.

I am so tired of people on the forum that act like a knife as just another tool and yet here they are spending time on a site dedicated to knife discussion. It really is ridiculous.

Gotta agree with you here, for the most part.

Every once in a while, when using a knife I'll actually think how happy I am with it in terms of preformance, ergonomics and aesthetics... especially my ZT 560CBCF, which my co-workers cringe over when I tell them I use it as a regular work knife around my second job, almost 'beater' status, just without the abuse.

My view is that since they're cool, expensive and awesome, they preform and feel better. Truly a joy to use.

I agree completely, Most of my non-users are limited runs that are worth more today then when I bought them. That's not to say I wont use them at all, but I am not going to grab a ZT777 to do some tough work. but my most used knife is a actually a limited run, my Spyderco Para II in M390. I use more than almost any other knife I own.

I use about 001% of my Knives because most have been Disc. or are up there in price as most Customs are out of site
and I would no more use them than lend my German Shepard out.! My Spydie Delica ZDP189 I use the most but I have 2
back-ups to those and also to the few that I do use they have back-ups also.! I hate dirty - ugly - nasty- Knives.!!**
Just my opinion and would never ask anybody to change there ways just because of the way I believe.^^!**

I wouldn't use my "REI" Spyderco Q. Not exactly priceless, but they have at least doubled in value. Not exactly one-of-a-kind, but far from common. And long out of production.
Besides, I don't really like using serrated blades. ;)

 But I do so like to take my toys out for a spin. I guess one's practical use of the knife depends on how much emphasis one puts on any part. Since I've inherited so many knives, I also have to consider sentimentality to be an important element. If I were 100% a "practical-only/use-'em" guy, I'd have sold most of them off by now.

I have a box full of Spydercos. Most of them are either sprints or hard to find discontinued. I use almost all of them. That being said, I do not abuse them and since I rotate about 40 of them, they don't show alot of wear. I would not hesitate to use my S90 Para2 for what its designed to do - cut stuff.

I have to be really sold on a knife before I decide to use it...... I only NEED a knife once in a while so most any knife will get the job done, sounds bad coming from a knifenut but for my line of work light edc tasks is all they will see so examining cutting function in a hard use role is neither here nor there. I have to love everything about it..... when it shows up in the mail there may be something ergonomic I just don't like, maybe even for silly obsessive reasons. Having limited funds in this I can't afford to cut with anything I dont feel 100% on because the resale goes down..... If it passes my OCD, it gets used and enjoyed and wont likely be sold anytime soon.

The first thing I do when getting a new knife (both edc and kitchen knives) is put them on the stones and put my own edge on them. My joy comes from cutting with them and sharpening/maintenance.

They are simply my favorite tool to use.

I only own three knives at present you could call EDC, all are carried, use, and taken care of.

I do not have the extra funds to buy some safe queen knife that is only taken out of it storage place to be shown off to impress some Yuppie friend when they come of for dinner, wine, after dinner drinks, and a Cuban cigar.

BTW my friends like me are hot dog, chips people washed down with a cold beer. I do not smoke good cigars, or anything else any longer.

Have no Yuppie friends.

Going to by an Emerson because it is a knife for doing work, not ogling over.

Are you implying that this^ is the reason why people choose not to use a knife, or am I reading you wrong? Because I don't recall seeing anyone in this thread say anything about not using a knife so that they could impress anyone with it.

I have a few knives that I never use, the reasons vary- some are discontinued, and out of all of my knives I prefer to use some over others. I don't show my knives off to anyone, much less show them off to "yuppies" over drinks and cuban cigars.

In my opinion- to each their own. It's your knife, you should be able to do what you want with it without being judged by others. It's nice to see that most people in this thread appear to feel the same. Why people feel the need to judge or criticise others for what they choose to do with THEIR knives is beyond my understanding.

My point is the knives I own do get used, no safe queens. I am not a collector who say specializes in Spyderco, and is driven to have one of ever knife in perfect condition that Spyderco ever made. Would be a cool collection to have.

I am just a guy with three knives, nothing very expensive, but all get used, and carried daily. To me a knife is a tool, like a hammer. But it could also be a work or art. But the tool does the work, the art factor is just ginger bread, or icing on the cake.
