My knives are way too cool to use!

My point is the knives I own do get used, no safe queens. I am not a collector who say specializes in Spyderco, and is driven to have one of ever knife in perfect condition that Spyderco ever made. Would be a cool collection to have.

I am just a guy with three knives, nothing very expensive, but all get used, and carried daily. To me a knife is a tool, like a hammer. But it could also be a work or art. But the tool does the work, the art factor is just ginger bread, or icing on the cake.
This^ I understand completely. Again, to each their own :) .

I barely can remember a time when I only had three pocketknives. I was ten years old, and it would have been around 1979. Funny thing, I still have two of those three knives. The third was lost so naturally I bought an identical replacement (in 1983), which I still happen to have in NIB condition. :)

No, your knives are not too cool to use. They're mass produced tools. Your hammer, screwdriver, and pliers aren't too cool to use either.
The vast majority of one-of-a-kind custom knives are not too cool to use either.
These are not Faberge eggs that will crack into tiny pieces if you fart near them the wrong way. They're quality tools designed to give years and years of use.
Rubbing them down, like other forms of knifesturbating, might make you feel good, but is in no way necessary.
Feel free to idolize them and fetishize them all you like; no one here will tell you it's silly to do so.

Nailed it! Perfect response my man!

Me personally - none of my knives are "too cool to use"! Are you kidding me? I can't wait to use a new knife. A new purchase is put into use the second I open the package! If you don't use your knives as tools to cut stuff with, what the hell do you use them for? Some kind of worship totem for the blade gods? The blade gods want you to use your knives!

My fixed blades get used a ton, because when I use them, I'm usually camping or at my folks house in the hills, or outdoors in some way.

My folders don't see as much action because I work in an office and to be honest, I have to look for excuses to use my knives :P
But I do use them.
But I do have some I just keep in their boxes. Depends on the folder. But all my fixed blades are users.

Awesome!! This should be the banner across the top of Bladeforums. And, as usual, FPNI.

I once farted near my sebenza. It survived , but I got an email from CR saying that the warranty was voided.

How are you gonna know how good the knives really are or how awesome some high-tech steel is unless you use it?
Just my $0.02.

I am going to make bumper stickers! Who wants one?

Zieg

Awesome man! I'm in for 2! Just make sure you get one made a little smaller. One for the Harley, one for the car! Actually I'd buy a dozen and plaster em on random cars! Spread the blade love!

One thing I'd like to add is that trying out a new blade shape or steel is just magic to me. I'm sure I'm not alone.

I own alot of spydercos, pretty much the only brand i will buy, most just production knives, few discontinued models but nothing super rare. Out of about the 30 that i own i only find myself switching between maybe 3 of them. These 3 i do not baby them like my others but i do not like to jack them all up. I never carry the discontinued models i own. But evan my production knvies i baby them and do not like to beat the hell out of them evan though thats what they are made for. Evan though i might treat them like they are some super rare expensive knife they arent, but thats just how i like to keep my knives, in good condition. Considering how much money ive spent on all of them. Everyone values their knives differently. If you dont want to use your knives and would rather collect them in a safe, thats fine in my eyes. Its your money that your spending on these knives so do whatever you want with them and noone should tell you any different because its not their hard earned money that they are spending on your knives.

If you buy knives you have an intended purpose for them, correct guys? Ok, some guys buy to collect. Alright, but what's the point in collecting a tool that's meant to use? Next you have the users - buy the knife, use the knife. Makes sense. Then you have the investment buyers - "flippers". Dude, knives are really the wrong market for that. At most knife flippers aren't making much..... Makes no sense at all to me to buy a tool and not use it for it's intended purpose.

Some people collect things and dont use them purposely to keep them in perfect condition. Weather its knives, shoes, old toys or cars, most of the time whatever your spending your money and time collectiong has some kind of high value to it. I dont see why people think its so bad to collect knives and not use then. I bet the guy who collects all the nice looking kiwis i always see pictures of in those big glass display cases, doesnt use them all. I know if i owned them i wouldnt.

Makes no sense. Let me gather together all these tools and never use them. Wow, I have a "collection" of something that is commonly available sitting there unused for no other reason than it makes me happy to look at them. Ok, fine, but still doesn't make much sense to me to collect tools and preserve them in pristine condition. Bottom line is: do what you want to with your money, but don't expect me not to laugh about it.

Big big difference between collecting for the sake of collecting, and collecting to eventually turn a profit.

I hear you, but why collect knives? I mean, knives that will never be used? They are cutting tools ....

Lemme ask you this: if you were to die tomorrow, how do you think your precious collection would be treated? Would they be lovingly rubbed down with oil every day and placed lovingly back in their glass presentation case? Hell no! After your family chunked you in the clay, your knives would be sold off in a massive fire sale, probably to recoup expenses from you "falling down on the job"....

So now how much sense does it make? Enjoy using your tools that were made to be used and enjoyed!!!! While you are above ground. If you don't, I'm sure your family can make pennies on the dollar for them after you're gone.
