I figured i'd post this here because I trust all of your opinions. There's a small photo contest with the subject matter being this mountain. We're allowed three submissions, so far I have two. Similar shots with different focal lengths, one being multiple exposures/HDR where there is quite a bit of haze on the Mt, the other being a single exposure where the haze was a great deal less. Let me know what you think!

Non HDR (I like this one better) -

Damn, KILLER Pics!!! Guess its time for me to get a decent camera, and learn how to use it. Keep 'em coming....

IMHO,

I think that in the first picture, the color of the fence overpowers the mountain. The first pic says, "My Fence", where the second pic appropriately draws the viewer to the mountain.

But, they are both beautiful shots. However, the second picture more effectively captures the subject matter.

kuanomar, exactly my opinion as well. When the first shot was taken there was a terrible amount of haze over the mountain so the saturation in the fence and trees really overpowered everything. I think the second picture, along with wider crop really bring out the mountain a bit more.

I agree. The brightness of the fence makes it the focal point.
I also prefer the bright blue sky in the second shot.
Nice job!!!

I agree with the others. The composition is better in the second. The Mountain gets lost in the background of the first.

Cool pics:thumbup:

I like the HDR shot better, it's "darker" or "ominous", something about the pic seems like there's more to it, if that makes sense.

I like both photos, but the composition seems less about the mountain and more about the foreground (which may only matter in terms of the contest). Nice work though.

The HDR shot looks like there is a hugh ghost flame just to the left ot the peak.

Non-HDR shot =

The second pic looks like a postcard pic very nice. But i like the sky better in the second pic. You are getting very good with that new camera Mike.

I actually like the first picture better. In the second picture, the mountain is very obviously the main subject matter, but TOO obvious. Like someone waving his hands yelling 'hey look at me!' in the first picture, the looming, somewhat omnious mountain is quite sinister, an ever present being, if you must. Even though the vibrant colour of the fence may initially steal the viewers glance, its the mountain that ultimately holds their attention.
Sorry, an art school graduate. Can't help myself. :)

Aesthetically the HDR is stronger. Composition (which is excellent) is the same in both, but the flow is stunted in both by different elements. The first will be your strongest artistically if you can dodge on the mountain itself and bring it back as the focal point. I'm assuming you know your way around a camera and Photoshop. If not, please don't hesitate to contact me for assistance.

I like the clouds in the first on but overall the second one is better and I would go with.

Both nice shots but
I really like the first one
the swirling clouds have a lot of movement.
Unlike what the others say,I think it points to the mountain.
Yes,I think the fence color is a little strong,BUT
crop out the fence line and then look at the picture, without
the "strong orangish" fence in there....
I really like it
can you alter the fence color with software or are you
submitting this "as shot" by the camera?

(the second picture I think emphasizes the grassy area and fence
more than the mountain.)
