Title says it all. My nephew is 13 years old and wants a Sebenza. I'm not sure which one, but either way it'll be a big investment for him. I don't see him that often, so I can't give him much advice or any other options he may like any more than a CRK, so I was hoping some of you guys could give him some yourselves? I'll show him this thread next time I see him. So, what advice do you guys have? He doesn't have a definite source of income yet, so he'll be saving up for a while yet before he gets one.

Will this be his first knife?

I am also curious as to how at 13 he came to the realization that he wants a CRK?!
I mean in terms of the thought process....

Save your money, and buy nice things.

I bought my first Rolex at 13...It took me a while to discover Sevenzas. If the boy has good tastes and the discipline to save, more power to him.

As for what to recommend? Its really a personal taste thing. However he discovered the Sebenza, I would guess will also serve as a means for him to see the different options and he should be able to figure out what he likes;)

No. He has a few Kershaws and Spydercos.

Ok, well then he is 'into' knives and has a good understanding for what he likes and doesn't I presume.

I have no opinion on CRK, but I think that it's great that he's into knives, and that if he want's a CRK, he should save up and get a CRK.

There's nothing quite like saving for something for a long time and then getting it, teaches you a lot of good things about the right way to obtain something, and hopefully it will make the knife all that more special.

Hard work builds character, he should do a weekend job cutting grass so that he could earn that knife he wants.

If it's his money and he's saving for it I don't see how you can tell him no. You can advise him as to why it might not be a good idea but if he insists let him go. Odds are it'll be a learning experience for him, but an expensive one.

My bet....it'll end up lost, stolen or ruined by a friend before he's had it a year.

Let us know....

I will ASSUME that at 13, his hands are not terribly large. So, have him look at the SMALL Sebenza, not the large model.
The small closed length is just a hair less than 4" and works for most folks, although my large hands need the larger model Sebbie.
I would also recommend the standard titanium slabs, although this is also personal preference. I've had many Sebbies, both small and large, with many graphic models, carbon fiber and wood inlays. They are all special, but my very favorite is the titanium slabs; they feel good in my hand.
The blade length is barely less than 3" so remains legal for carry in most jurisdictions. It's a great knife.
I hope that he enjoys it.

I agree with the others. He's into knives, has the discipline to save, then by all means go for it!! I've never owned a CRK so I cannot comment on that.

It's great that he knows what he wants. I would tell him to continue on and get only the one he wants now. As we all know, if he buys something else instead, he will still be chasing the CRK.

my advice? dont settle. If you want a large, get a large, if you want inlays get the inlays. The sebenza is a rewarding knife in any of its variations. But I believe when you make that leap to get something of this caliber it pays to get what you really want. Or else you will always say, "man I only wish I had...." IMHO there is no real wrong answer to a sebenza. It simply a matter of checking the boxes of preferences and enjoying the spoils of your purchase. And on the ultra rare occasion something goes wrong they fix it. Basically its a no brainer.

Go to CRK's web page. Get the list of distributors, there's a bunch. See if any are close to where he lives. Let him hold one in hand and look at the different combos that CRK makes. He can then decide which model he wants that will be in his budget. Then he'll know which one he wants.

Saving 350+ can take a while to do at that age especially since girls will be in the big picture soon. That will change his mind in a heart beat! Any way, you should talk to him about an important life lesson is to know the difference between what you want and what you need. When he gets older and has all other bases covered, then he can splurge on what he wants. But putting everything into one basket (when as a previous poster mentioned he could very well lose the thing [or have a teacher take it out of his pocket]) could be expensive.

My 2 cents.

Sebenza in an awesome knife. In fact, i had the benefit to have one and, boy, i love it. If your nephew wants it, i could understand why, seeing that he is into knives.

I just have two points on the matter:

1. Price - sebenza is not cheap, so saving up will take a while. Just ask him whether it is what he wants. Personally, i think it is too early to get an expensive knife at his age but if he can commit, why not~

2. Taking care - Not on maintenance (sebenza is very easy to maintain) but more on safekeeping. No doubt he will treasure it, but others don't. Others will borrow it and wont really care of it. It might get lost or stolen, so he need to know of the risk so that he will always take precaution and care for it (anyway, sebenza is a user, be sure that he use it 😁)

All in all, its about experience. No matter what his final decision and actions are, i am sure he will learn a lot through this. Just gove him support and guidance (you are sooo lucky, i even struggle to find family members who love knives 😅)

Smart kid ! I waited a long time to get one , too long ! A small is a good knife if you have larger ones , but a large would be better if its your only one !

He's saving for it himself? I say game on! Let him get half way and have family chip in for the rest!

Its awesme that you have a family member that is so into knives. I dont personally have CRK, but I do have some high end knives, and saving for the exact knife you want is very exhilarating. I find looing at different brands and knives that they have, and find the exact knife I want to be being the best part. Like getting inlays, sizes, grip patterns, tips, blade shapes, or locking mechs. If a CRK knife is what you want more power to you, but just look around before you spend that kind of money there are planty of other great knives in that price range and below.

I will. I'll keep this thread updated as it happens.
