My Nephew Wants a Sebenza

Not owning one I can't really comment but, does he already have the money? At that age I worked for my father's small business, but at my wages (which were pretty fair considering he also paid for my food, clothing and shelter :p) It would have taken several dedicated months to come up with the necessary funds. If he's still working toward it he may go off the idea before he gets there, or decide some other knife is more urgent.

He's about halfway there. Last time he told me he has $216 in about 2 months, partly because of Christmas. 😁

*Edit*. He gets the money by mowing his parents'/grandparents' grass at a combined total of $15. I think he's started sharpening his parents' kitchen knives on a Sharpmaker and a strop as well.

The world needs more 13 year olds like your nephew...
Most of the ones I see in that age range look like they need a couple of trips behind the woodshed...

Thanks! And I agree. Just not good. Heck, even on the local news a few days ago it said that there were teens in the park glueing sharp pieces of metal (like door hinges) on the monkey bars and slides to cut other kids' hands. Not good at all.

Not to get too off-topic but sadly that's happened a couple times already... with razor blades.

Wow! I mean, I did my share of dumb things when I was a teen/kid, but some of these things make you wonder.
And no, it's not 'our parents said the same thing' because what you just described is way over any line you can draw for what is going too far....

Every kid one here was like that, but they all just kinda lost interest. Their used to be about 7 kids that frequented the forum, and now we're down to 1 :(
Setting high goals and working to achieve them is a good lesson. :D

+1

Good for him! I agree that it's a good lesson to work hard and save your money for nice things. I'm not a fan of the pessimists posting about how it will get lost, ruined, expensive lesson, blah, blah, blah.

That's a hell of a knife for a thirteen year old, when I was thirteen I had mostly junk, this was in the 70's,my 1st good knife was a buck 110 in 1976.

13 year old saving for a Sebenza.... wow. I have mixed emotions really. I don't own one myself. I could buy one pretty much any time I feel like it, but I don't... I could even write it off as a business expense, but there is a matter of perspective. It should be a lot of money for a 13 year old kid.

Aspiring for high cost things is great when you pay for them yourself without inflicting any concerns with other priorities. At his age, I would be thinking about guns myself. This is when I was beginning to buy guns and they weren't cheap. I got my first 22 rifle in 9th grade. I carried a Case Barlow and used it for everything. The Barlow was expensive to me. ....perspective....

I'd guess that at his age he probably has few real expenses other than video games. He'll have to suck it in for a while with the video games unless he has a lot of relatives who provide such things as presents. So, go for it and if he is a good kid, he'll prize it for a long time. He will remember the real cost for life and it will help him keep things in perspective down the road. I would choose one of the smaller ones myself.

If he is willing to work and save the money I think he should get one. I agree that it would be nice for him to actually hold a few different models to decide which fits him best. If he is mature enough to work for the money I think he will take good care of it and like many of us decide one Sebenza isn't enough. Most boys his age would spend that kind of money on a gaming system that will be worthless in a few years when the Sebenza is still valuable. If you posted the same question saying he wanted to save up for an X-Box nobody would give it a second thought.

I agree with several of the previous posts. If he is willing to work and save the money, good for him. The young man sounds pretty responsible already.

I was thinking the same thing. Tons of 13 year old boys spend that kind of money on video game systems. A quality knife is a better investment because it will last longer. That said, most 13 year olds aren't responsible enough to keep up with that knife. They would break or lose it. If your nephew is saving up for it himself my guess is he will take care of it.

One thing is that isn't a whole lot of room to go up in quality from a sebenza. Most of us gradually go up the ladder to higher quality and cost. He is already pretty far up there at 13. But, it's still better than wasting his money like most 13 yr olds.

Sounds like he ^^^ hit the nail on the head.....at least he isnt asking for an xbox or some crappy toy, he sounds like a responsible kid and with the quality of a sebenza, he can essentially have something at a young age that will last him the rest of his life. Investing the money would be more of a payoff obviously....at such a young age, but if thats what he wants to buy the small sebenza would be perfect. Hes much better off getting it now than trying to get one when he has bills! Hehe

My 12 year old cousin has my seb on loan right now, he's in love with it!

He has a few spyderco and understands the difference in the seb... I'm so proud :)

Tons of 13 year old boys spend their parents' money on a video game system like that. ;) But there might be a few who have that kind of money on their own.

That said, it's true... I very much enjoy video games but I haven't got the latest Xbox yet, because I can't afford it and I'm still using the old one. And of course, you can't play the games you already have on the new system... incompatible. :/
