Very nice my friend. To own a piece of history is a nice feeling. A feeling I am looking for. Congrats!!!!!

Congrats, I've being eyeing this one on the green forum, glad it went to a good home.

Are you going to send this back to the ranch for some spa treatment?

That looks sweet. I'd use the heck out of it for a while then maybe send it to get refinished later. I was thinking about buying that one but never pulled the trigger.
How do you like it compared to the newer generation models? Is this also your 1st custom?

I like those older ones.....is yours with a half liner on the scale side? it's nice to see the evolution of the folder. congrats!

Sweet score! I was checking that one too.

I am pretty sure all Gen 1 and 2s are custom, and Gen 3 was the first time "production" blades came to be.

The price I paid will remain unsaid, even though I think plenty here were eyeing this knife before I pulled the trigger. I can say, happily, that the seller was willing to negotiate a lower price with me!:) As far as sending it to Rick for refurbishing I think I will leave it as is for a while. I love the look of a well worn working knife and this one definitely has that. It's still perfectly aligned and rock solid lock up so it's only cosmetics. This one does half the 1/2 liner on the side. How do I like it compared to the newer generation models? It just feels more special to me because of it's history. I really like the grind, which appears different to me than the current spanto. It feels heavier than the other 3.5 I had, but I can't say it is for a fact. Smooth deployment, feels great in the hand. I guess there's not a huge difference in the feel in my hand, I just really like the look of it and the R. Hinderer stamp on the blade....

Glad to see you end up with that one and didn't have any issues with that seller. Also, that seller was crazy with their original ask price, glad to see they came back to reality.

Great score, enjoy it.

Um, no, these were all customs (Gen 1 and Gen 2 XM-18 3.5" were all custom ground, they predated any production blades).

Custom ground? so these were ground to specific customer specifications?

My spyderco PM2 has a blade which was hand ground, therefore it is a custom...right?

Congrats! It is a timeless Hinderer XM-18. Love the spanto grind on the original XM-18s.

Gen 1 and 2 XM-18 are all hand ground blades, assembled and sharpened by R. Hinderer. Hence the full custom knife. Jay your Spydie may be hand ground but probably not by Sal Glesser himself. If it is then that is one special Spyderco.

I'm not going to hi-jack Mapricks awesome acquisition thread, the custom debate is for another day/thread.

Again, congrats on a most excellent knife and I look forward to seeing it in the photo threads - hint/nudge!

No, they were custom ground by Rick Hinderer, as opposed to a production blade that is milled on a CNC machine, custom grinding doesn't have to be to a customer's specifications.

I am not going to debate this with you, I was speaking specifically about Rick Hinderer knives, the Gen 1 and Gen 2 XM-18 3.5" are considered customs.

Question for the sake of understanding only:

Were early Hinderer XMs ever referred to as "customs" before the productions existed? To be clear--we're they just Hinderer knives that happened to be hand-ground by Rick or were they actually and factually referred to as "custom Hinderers"?

Very nice knife, Maprik.

The early Spanto is sweet and the wear gives it character.
