My New Gen 1 XM

Interesting how the XM has evolved. I see the half liner, and the different pivot screw, etc.....

Great pics!

I think that this blade was coated with something or maybe it was just blasted? Anyone know? If I send this in for a refurb will it get reblasted or re-coated?

It wasn't coated, it appears to be bead blasted (could have been sand blasted too and is worn) and typically Hinderer Knives will maintain the same finish during refurbishment. Hinderer Knives is currently accepting knives for refurbishment, contact Rob for more info and consult this link:

Map, that knife has character. If it were mine, I'd consider requesting a professional cleaning, sharpening and adjustment (while it's at the Spa, why not?) but I'd leave the "battle scars".

I'm really torn. I absolutely Love this knife as it is. It's perfect in every way. I just see all these brand spanking new Gen 4s with their DLC coating etc. and I can see in my minds eye what this knife would look like if it was refurbed to like new. But yes, it would lose all these great battle scars that make it look so cool.... One day I think it would look so great like new and then the next I just stare at it admiring it's rugged beauty...

You could always trade it to me for a new DLC knife. :p

This is completely off the chain!

I like it as is, love the fact that the back is bead blasted and not very marred up.

It's all just talk really. My XM is not going to leave my side voluntarily unless I am travelling by plane. I don't think I could bring myself to ship it to RHK unless something needs repair...

Excellent Score Maprik, Love everything about it, especially all the bead-blasting on the hardware. From a collectors standpoint, do not refinish it, it's (beautiful) worth more as is.

I'm 90% in agreement. While it would be cool to have a mint one it seems wrong to erase the history of this particular knife. Really, it's become like a living entity to me that I just happen to be in possession of for the moment. Like this knife will be around long after I'm gone and onto another owner (hopefully my son, 11, who is becoming quite a knife nut himself...) but who knows????

That's why I suggested a limited Spa treatment. A cleaning, sharpening and fitment, but leave the historical beauty alone. It's like brand-new in function, but historically accurate in appearance.

For what it's worth - I periodically scrub around my thumb studs with an old tooth brush & rubbing alcohol to clean. That's a typical location to breed rust. Alcohol is a drying agent & flushes out any moisture it the seam of the press fit. I get a tad anal about maintenance of my valued stuff even if it's hard use oriented. All the best with that beauty bro.
