Hi all,

I'm grinning ear to ear as I write this, and looking forward to hitting the trails with my new custom hiking stick.

A while back, I won a giveaway contest put on by Bushman5. The prize was a custom-made hiking stick, which he was working on over the holidays. It arrived this morning, in an amazingly well-wrapped package.

The stick is beautiful. Multiple coats of linseed oil really bring out the texture of the wood, and the detailing (in the form of an etched and wood-burnt 'barbed wire' motif) is fantastic. It feels sturdy enough to brain a kodiak.

In an email, Bushman5 mentioned that he had included a small leather pouch with a cord that could be lashed to the stick, which is great. Perfect size for a mini-PSK. Well, when the package arrived, there was the pouch - and it didn't feel empty.

Upon opening it, I discovered a little etched Spyderco cricket (!!!). This is a seriously cool (and deceptively sharp) little knife, and I think it might become a regular fixture in my EDC setup. Wow!

It has been said before many times, but I'll say it again: We have an amazing and unbelievably generous community here.:thumbup:

Bushman5, you have my sincere thanks. Don't be surprised if you find a little something from me in the mail in the near future.

My only regret is that I am unable to post pics of my new hiking stick in an appropriate W&SS setting. But that will change come spring.

All the best,

- Mike

That is really nice - all the way.

Put it to good use - it's obvious you appreciate it!.

Very nice.

Taht is very cool! That barbed wire design looks slick on there, I liek that.

Wow that's very cool.

Bushman, How did you burn the designs in it? Did you use a dedicated wood etcher? I was thinking about trying my hand at somethin like this and just using a soldering iron I have.

That's just great looking. Got to put that on my 2009 wish list.
Does he have a website or email info. Enjoy.

Wow! That's really nice.

I've got a few questions for you:

What's the wood?
What's the length?
Are the designs burned in or carved and then burnt?

Really, really nice work.

It's red oak, finished with Danish and linseed oils.

Length is 4 ft.

In the original thread about this project, Bushman5 said he carved the designs with a red-hot file, so I suppose you could say they were both carved and burnt simultaneously.

All the best,

- Mike

yup, i used my old chainsaw chain files and hand filed the groove in, then used heated up the file red hot, pressed it into the groove and slowly burned my way around the design. The red hot file makes a "squealing" noise as it burns the wood, its kinda neat. LOTS of smoke, so if you try it do it outdoors. The bottom "raccoon tail rings" were flame burnt with a torch. Then I soaked the stick in a capped off ABS pipe filled with turpentine (to thin) and linseed oil for a number of months. Finally i wetsanded (3M autobody paper) and steel wooled using turp/linseed oil then hand rubbed pure linseed oil onto it. waited until each layer was hard tacked and then added more and more coats.

that is cool.. great job Bushman... reminds me of Little John's staff from Robin Hood...:D
