finally got my nail nick lonestar hunter , beautiful knife , came sharp as you expect a cold steel too. But there's two problems , firstly : now that I've opened it , it won't close . I push the lock back in as hard as I can and using the ways I know to close various folders , and the blade just won't effin disengage. The second problem ; the Kwik thumb stainless I bought for it doesn't fit :(

Triad locks can be buggers to disengage the first few times and can take quite a bit of strength, but I've never had one that just won't close. Wow. Keep trying or send back to CS as defective. As for the 2nd complaint, don't they sell a thumbstud version? Good luck!

The Tri-Ad locks when brand new do need some breaking in (in my experience). Had my Mackinac stick open as well like you are talking about. It only did it a few times, and only when I really wrist flicked the knife open really hard. I had to find something to wedge against the lockbar to get it to disengage. The knife now will close easily no matter how hard I open the knife. Good luck

Yes they do but in Australia customs can confiscate any knife that can be opened by one hand

That's seriously depressing. Is it legal to own one hand opening knives there?

As for the lock put some oil on it. Have that problem with lockbacks once and awhile and oil does the trick. And just keep messing with it since it's stiff from being new.

It's not legal to carry any knife in Australia unless you have a " lawful reason" for carrying said knife , and every cop knows something different :( I may try the oil suggestion. This is a beautiful knife

Mines locked open by normally opening it with two hands.

This wonderful lock takes some breaking in. My much loved mini recon 1 was very hard to close when I got it. After about half a dozen opening and hard closings it starting to smooth up quickly. It is now one of the two smoothest knives in my collection and easy to close.

Leave it halfway opened for a few nights and it will be easier to unlock. Also make sure your pressing toward the rear of the lock. My wife could finally unlock my espada when she moved her thumb back a touch. Triad lock manipulaters have the strongest thumbs in the world lol.

My Mackinac was like that. I oiled it, worked the lock using a table edge and left I half open for days. It is fine now.

Jesus. Australia is one of the most uptight places on earth. Guns, knives, don't even want to know about alcohol and drug policies. Though maybe their more lenient than the US about that. With all the dangerous animals around you would think they would advocate carrying a knife and gun. Feel for ya brotha. After hearing this surprised there are so many knifers from AUS. I'd have some in the home but would not invest in as many as I have with fear of conviscation from police and not carrying them using them to their full potential. Just out of curiousity, is prostitution legal there?

I flew to NZ then Indonesia last summer, the TSA in AUS confiscated the 2 liters of jack Daniels we bought at the duty free shop because the duty free bag didn't have a staple!!! We had the receipt and everything!!! Wouldn't even let us go back to the shop to have it sealed properly!!!

On a positive note, there was a group of Aussies on the plane that felt bad for us and bought us drinks the whole flight!!!

We were surprised to meet so many Aussies in Indonesia when we got there, I guess it's a pretty popular travel spot for you guys since it's so close?
Anyways we were in Indonesia for 6 weeks and every Aussie we met was completely awesome and friendly (and pretty damn wild!!), we had the best times of the trip hanging out with our new brothers from across that side of the pond. Seriously great, fun people.
Couldn't exactly say the same for NZ, although we did meet some amazing Kiwis in Auckland and on the South Island.

Can you legally carry a fixed blade?

I dont know if you'd want to do this, but you could always drill a hole in the blade and use that for thumb traction, like a spyderco.

I had an older Kershaw that I lost the thumb stud on, I put a neat mound of epoxy where the stud used to be and roughed it up with a file, it worked for years.

I know that won't match with such a nice knife as the lone star hunter, I'm just brainstorming. Maybe JB weld, or tack weld or something?

Prostitution is legal , if it's a licensed brothel. It doesn't bother me that I can't carry a gun. I'm very discrete about my knife carry , and if get searched my bk14 is for work.

It looks like that particular misinterpretation of the Regulations has been fixed to a fairly large degree. As far as I know assisted openers and some folders which can be opened with a wrist flick are still out, but a thumbstud won't get it blocked now. When I carry a knife I tend to stick with something a bit traditional that takes two hands to open anyway because it's less likely to look like a weapon to the uninformed.

I still can't close the thing. I've tried putting pressure on the back of the blade , as I keep my fingers clear and push it right from the back of the lock . The only thing I have sitting around that'd lube a knife is wd40 , and that stuff stinks , how am I gonna put the knife in my pocket after that ?I'm not sending it back it'll cost me a fortune in postage. I won't give up on it , so what sort of oil do I buy?

I just used light oil like 3 in 1 . Leaving it half ope and testing it every few days really worked on my Mackinac. It is fine now. I really hope it works for you.

Honestly I shouldn't have to mess around using oil and crap , this should work like it's supposed to straight out of the box. Cold steel sues other companies for things , but I buy a knife from them and I have to pay extra money just to get it to work like it's supposed to? Don't think so. And I bet cold steel won't pay for my postage to send it back
