My shiny new large Sebenza arrived today from Northwest Cutlery. Previously, my most expensive knife was a custom Wilkins Thorn neck knife, my largest was a Benchmade mini-Spike, and my sharpest was a Spyderco Cricket, and my favorite for just opening and closing was a Benchmade mini-Stryker.

The Sebenza has now taken all four crowns. I'm extremely impressed. This knife is sharp! The size and shape is great, too. I can easily understand why the Sebenza is many people's favorite daily carry.

Now if I can just muster the courage to tell my wife...

I'm very disappointed in you , Brett, for making this unilateral knife purchase without consulting all of us. Especially after all we did to help you with that neck knife. I hope you catch hell from your wife.

Congratulations on a great acquisition.

If you do figure out a good way to tell the wife, be sure to let us know. That would be an invaluable piece of information

As to the explanation to the better half;

I always apologize for spending just under $100.00 for something as small as a knife...

Oh yes, learn to use money orders!

Gotta get out of the "patch" mode and go on the offensive. First, buy a Benchmade Leopard and Cub, and give the Cub to her as a token of love. Trust me, with a Benchmade Cub in her purse and a matching knife on your belt, she cannot refuse! After that, sit and wait for her to turn into a knife addict.

So I should get my lady a matching Umfaan?

Sebenzas are GREAT aren't they ?
I love mine. They are all visiting the Reeves for engraving at this moment.
I miss them.
But, when they return, they will be identical in finish and all engraved with my name

Congratulations on your new baby! Mine is about one year old now...man I love that knife!
As far as the spouse goes...always consider the "W" ratio when saving for a knife. Mine is 4 to 1, $400.00 for me, $100.00 for her. ( I don't tell her the w-factor) This has worked for me so far. You can adjust the ratio when needed....good luck

Jack - if you check the bladeforums bylaws, section 32, "Acquisition Prerequisites", paragraph (b), you'll see that it clearly states: "Sebenza purchases are exempt from standard knife pre-purchase board discussion requirements, because they kick ass."

Despite from having interesting wording for a legal document, I'd say it's pretty clear. It also says something about Sebenza purchases automatically conferring "Senior Member" status, but I'm not sure I read that part right...

As for telling my wife about my new baby, it turns out my habit of giving her detailed explanations of the virtues of ATS-34, G-10, locking mechanisms, etc after my past purchases worked well this time. I showed it to her and said, "look at this!". She replied with "how is it different from the others?" but then caught herself and insisted we talk about something, anything, else. That was it! Dollar figures were never mentioned.

Ooh, it worked: I'm a senior member now!

Boy, if I had only known about that earlier, I would have bought a Sebenza a long time ago.

I do actually have a couple questions regarding the Sebenza:

1. What does it cost to have the Reeves engrave a Sebenza? Are there any pictures online showing what it looks like?

2. If I untie the lanyard, how can I get it back on like that? Is there a trick to tying it?

3. What angle should I use to sharpen the blade? It seems to have a rather steep angle. Note that I don't plan to sharpen mine anytime soon.

Good choice on the Sebenza. I saved for months putting away a few dollars here and there to get one, now it's my daily carry. Don't be afraid to carry and use it, it's a great knife. As far as the wife, apparently you haven't explained to her the phenomena of how knives tend to reproduce while left alone in drawers, just like fishing poles stacked in a corner of the garage. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Brett,

Answers (kinda) to your questions:

1) $20 + shipping

2) If you send it in, they will add a new fob for you. I have tied one on one of my enduras but have no idea how. Take a look here, I think it is there:

http://www.lehighgroup.com/KNOTS.htm

3) If you send it in, they will sharpen it for you (i.e., I don't know the angle). I think...

Hope this is somewhat helpful...

Anne Reeve said that the Sharpmaker is a good tool to use on the Sebenza. I have used it with the white sticks on the tips (not the flats) to restore my small Seb from hair-shaving to hair-jumps-off-your-arm-at-the-sight-of-the-blade sharpness.

I was really afraid to even use it at first but after having it about a year can say that you can use it and easily touch it up yourself and probably only need to send it in if you make a real mess of it.

re:wife/girlfriend -- mine gave me the most nasty look when I handed her a black-blade AFCK to cut off some clothing tags and she handed it back to me holding it with her finger tips as if it was something dirty. The Sebenza won a little more credibility.

She has no idea how much most of these cost and I've told her that I tend to horsetrade 'em around a lot, since she doesn't know the exact inventory. ;-)

Bylaws? We have bylaws? We don't need no steenkin bylaws. Probably a good thing I didn't know beforehand, and now it's too late.

Brett, welcome to Club Sebenza. I think you'll be very happy for a very long time. I never really had a problem with "breaking the news" to my wife. I sold a couple Benchmades and a Spyderco, and bought the Sebenza, simply stating that I was going to get rid of a couple less expensive knives and get one good knife. "Besides, hon, why do I need all these knives cluttering up the dresser or rattling around the junk drawer?" No problemo.
Hey, there's a plan to fly a Sebenza under the radar of "she who must be obeyed". Use stray pocket change to buy a bunch of cheap knives, clandestinely leaving them around the house, and one day, proudly announce, "Ya know, I'm gonna get rid of all this junk and get me one decent knife." I just wonder how many times a year this can happen before our significant others catch on?

Whipped and proud of it,

So, how many of us own the Sebenza out there? I traded a more expensive knife to get mine, and it was the best business deal ever! And it's a tough sucker too, locks up tight enough to feel like a sheath knife.

Don,

You are a genius! I have been using the "I didn't buy it, I traded for it" line, but the "getting the clutter out of the house" routine is brilliant!

I see a Sebenza in the very near future. Just trying to find out who's got the best deal. I will place an order within a week. A small Sebenza will be mine...yes..it will be mine.

In reply to the who owns a Sebenza;

I have a large and a small original that I have never used and a large new style that never leaves my side - except when I board a plane. I've owned and do own a good few knives and the Sebenza wins hands down with me.
