My new wilderness knife

CShepherd can you give some more details on for forge.
Thanks
Bryan

No problem. It's actually made out of one end of a 130mm mortar tube. It's approximately 6" in diamater (which is actually a bit small) and has about 1 1/2" of Inswool coated with satanite. I got all of these items, except the mortar tube, from Darren Ellis at Ellis Custom Knifeworks.

Pretty much I cut off the end of the tube, about 10" deep if I remember correctly. Again when I do it again I will do it just a bit deeper. One of the biggest things I'll change is how the Propane torch goes inside. I'll move the hole back as the rear of the forge is not as hot as the front. The little Bernzomatic JTH-7 really heats things up nicely. I've had no problem getting non-magnetic on O1 using small propane bottles, Mapp Gas without oxygen, and what I mostly use which is a larger propane tank off of a grill. I just bought an adapter at Ace Hardware for $10 and it works wonderfully.

It's very important to coat the Inswool with something. The fibers are not good for your lungs and my understanding is that they will get in the air real easily when heated up. I actually need to get some more satanite and touch up a couple of areas. I also have a narrow piece of firebrick with a couple of grooves cut in it inside the forge to act as work supports. This I will change as it works so-so.

Feel free to ask any other questions. Darren is also a great resource and has some really nice burner kits as well as made up burners, both forced air and venturi.

Thanks to everyone for the great comments. I just finished staining the sheath and hopefully will get to work on the matching firesteel tomorrow. I'll post some more pics soon.
