My new ZDP Leek

I too am VERY impressed with Kershaw's reaction to this small problem. I was already impressed with your products, but you have won a lifetime customer with your customer service.

I aggree...except I decided years ago kershaw was the best blade for me (at least for daily use). Based on quality and support I really don't even look at other knifes. I am not a collector just use them as tools, but kershaw has really won me over.

I hate to post twice in a row....but I got my 1660TIZDP today....and I am just so pleased it is amazing. The knife is so light and conftrible in my hands. The knife is so much lighter than my other leek's I am sure this one will easily become my daily use knife. Also the speed safe is quick and responsive. The blade opens with great force, and much to my suprise it does not click like my other leek's. This was not a big deal to me, just did not know any leeks could close without clicking. The safty was a little stiff, but i put some graphite on the guide and it opens a lot easier now.

To comment on the blade, it is not dull at all. This is just as sharp as any other kershaw knife I have gotten in the past. I wont even touch the blade untill it dulls a bit more.

I have only had this knife for a few hours and it has already blown me away, thanks kershaw...I am so happy each time I get a new knife from you. :-)

p.s. my knife is marked with the date Jul 06...so it must be from the first batch.

edit** I just sharpened my knife with my diamond stones for about 45min. I must say this steel is a lot slower to sharpen than anything else I have used. But I was also reducing the angle of the knife by 3 to 5 deg. Now that I am done sharpening this is by far the sharpest knife I have ever owned or seen. I am pretty impressed with this steel so far.

I hope you still reading this post. Can you tell us more about your process -
1. How do you grind?
2. How do you heat treat blades (Cryo?)
3. How do you assemble knives? Any robots?
4. ...We know how you do sharpen them...
5. How do you test sharpness?

Thanks, Vassili.

I just few minutes ago disassembled ZLeek and removed torsion bar. Strange feeling without SS - I am not sure, may be I'll keep it this way for a while and see do I like it or not.

Liner has little bol on the end - I guess it may keep it in close position better, however there is a close position lock on the end of the handle.

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. I used ~$10 green GorillaGrip 12632 which I check - made in USA.

I got my Leek 1660TIZDP today. I thought the guys that posted the blade was dull was exaggerating. Well mine was received dull, dull, DULL. I couldn't believe that a Kershaw would let their blades out of the factory like that. Where is the QC?!?!?!?!:grumpy:

Looks like my brand new Leek is going to take a trip on the Edge Pro table...

I said earlier that this knife was just right the way it was. It could shave smoothly, but sharper is better.

45 minutes on the sharpmaker and now its edge is 15 degrees with no secondary bevel. Another 20 minutes of stropping and the edge is polished and tree-tops hair.

This thing is scary sharp now, just amazing.

Reprofiling this blade took some time was but definitely worth the effort. Glad I did it myself too, because now it matches my sharpmaker just right. It should be easy to maintain.

It carries well inside my left pocket so off came the clip, then off came the safety, then on went a lanyard.

I think this will be my new "office knife".

Be careful -- my old Leek came open in my pocket when I tried carrying it that way.

That is sound advice. I'm carying mine with the blade side slightly tucked in to the side of my wallet so it should be reasonably safe.

Mine has never opened up in the pocket or IWB were I carry. I would hate to have to use the lock, you can adjust the pivot screw which will make it less prone to unintentional opening.

I tightened the lock screw down so that it would quit unintentionally locking out the blade. I haven't personally experienced any of my AO knives accidently opening in my pocket, but I guess that it is possible.

I finally got the blade sharpened without having to return it. It took awhile to reprofile the edge.

It is a very nice little knife.

I recieved my ZDP Leek in the post and I'm really impressed.

OK I recieved one of the not so sharp ones, (but I rarely take posession of a production or custom knife without feeling it needs a sharpen ;) ), and I did notice a strange correlation between clip placement and AO strength (switched to tip up and found the AO a little lack luster, switched back and all's fine), but all in all I really like this knife. :)

At least in the Leek range I think Kershaw have stepped up a gear in the last year, and that's great to see, especially as some of the other traditional names seem to be going in the opposite direction.

THat's funny YOG, I switched my leeks to tip up and they seem to open faster. I can't even see the blade move on my 1660st and my s30v 1660cgtst! I wish the Spec Bump moved that fast!

Like people, all of the KENshaws are unique!

But do you carry them without a clip? I have no fear of my Leek opening accidentally when clipped in my pocket without the safety, but I'll pass on carrying it without the clip.

Craig- I just got one of the ZDP leeks, and it has the exact same scuff on the blade as one I've seen on another forum (Dexter Ewing's knife I think). Is there any way to get this corrected, as I have no desire to try to refinish something as hard as ZDP.

This is Dex's knife, but mine looks pretty much exactly the same.

Dex's was the only one we have seen like that. I looked at that knife myself, and couldn't figure out exactly what happed.
Please send your knife in, and I will replace it with a new one. Sorry for the problem.

Hmmmm mine is a Jul 06 also and no scuff. I am thoroughly impressed with this knife. My former EDCs will be hitting and Ebay ad near you soon because they have been replaced by this little gem. If the speedsafe ever becomes an issue with the sheeples then I will disable it before I would ever consider not carrying it. With our without the speedsafe this is my new EDC. I love it!

No scuffs on mine but I did have an accident that needed 3 stitches in my thigh.

No, not an accidental opening in the pocket  and the way I carry mine that really is not a concern.

However I did act the fool and dropped it while showing it off to my oldest daughter: opened it, while sitting down, did a finger roll :foot: and it fell just perfectly. Danged balisong muscle memory... ruined a perfectly good pair of dress pants too.

If you have to have a cut, let it be clean and sharp enough so that it won't hurt and be in a place that should heal completely. This one was.

Remember: Ice Compression Elevation.

Couple questions, if I may?

Is the pocket clip Ti on these? Or SS?

Has anyone managed to transplant a S30V Leek Blade into the Ti frame?

CMSpeedy said:
No the clip is SS.

On the blade issue I too am interrested. Anyone know?

When you guys figure this out, do not throw away ZDP blades - send them to me!

Thanks, Vassili.
