My PLEA, Petition, Request to CRK

First let me say I have thoroughly enjoyed all my CRK's. That being said I have one uber request. I desperately desire a Umnumzaan with a Sebenza style pivot and a current "super steel" blade: S110V, S90V, CTS-20CP, or CTS-204P (or equivalent). C'mon CRK fans sound off and let's get this done; we all know CRK has great customer service, monitors the forums, and does their best to provide what their customers demand? I'd be willing to get a LE run put together and the forumites fund a special edition just to show CRK that the extra expense for tooling/labor would be covered by the demand in the market place! If you agree lets make our voices heard and get this phenomenal item built!

You already have the sebenza 25 style pivot on the zaan. Good luck with getting a super steel. There is nothing wrong with S35VN.

Honestly I don't see this happening. And I think that the strength of the zaan pivot could be achieved with a clever implementation of a pivot bushing, I don't really have a strong desire for a "super steel".

So am I to assume you feel the same way?

Not necessarily. My point is that Chris Reeve Knives will do what they want to do. When they introduced the "Made in Idaho" stamp it was hands across America to get it removed. As you can see, nothing has changed and it is still there. Getting him to retool a knife that is already in production will be nothing short of an act of God!

As for super steels, you can keep them. Even if CRK were to use them the Rockwell will still be set low for ease of sharpening so what is the point? If you are using a super steel that needs 65 Rockwell and he is only willing to go to 58-59 then it is a waste.

Like I said....Good luck! :)

Group Buy?

I look at it more- He's running a successful business, let him continue doing what he knows best.

A Group Buy would be a business move- Would CRK? If so what size run?

Mitch

Sorry, but it doesn't work that way.

If you need a knife in one of those steels you'll have to look to a company working with those steels.
Try Spyderco. Good luck.

That last part is certainly not backed up by reality. That said, it has not stopped me from adding CRKs my collection ;)

I'd like the "bushing" style pivot on the Umnumzaan; I fully understand that the 25 and Umnumzaan have the same style pivot. I never said there was anything wrong with S35VN, just mentioned what I'd like...

On steels-CRK does what they do for a reason. It is what works best for their business model and quality control. I believe making small number of knives in exotic steels(very limited in availability and requiring different methods of production) would be disruptive, with very little gain(their steels are fine). I also believe listens to their customers. I have seen a few reactions(models) to customer wants over the years, but they are not knee jerk reactions(they are well thought out before they are implemented)

The 25 is without a bushing for a reason. Chris said it himself in the Blade U class that the bushing is getting too expensive to produce.

I don't rain dance, pray or stand on the beach and scream at the sea.

I hadn't heard that before. I do hope that he doesn't get rid of it entirely, it's definitely one of the most appealing things about the Sebenza.

I appreciate the fact that the S35VN than CRK uses is not a chippy steel, or run at a too high hardness. I agree the edge holding on CRKs is less than amazing, but at the same time I have dented the edge of my Sebenzas at work, where other knives likely would have chipped. In the grand scheme a softer blade is my preference, as I can repair any damage without losing much steel.

I have thought about this a few times, and from what I have observed, it seems apparent that it would be less frustration, time, and money to simply find a custom maker to make your dream knife for you.

Notice, I did NOT say cheap or quick or hassle free.

CRK does what they do well, and they are somewhat well known for being successful by doing what they do...as someone that has run a business, I'd suggest that you should listen to and appease your customers ONLY to the point that it fits your business model. This notion that every company ought to fall all over themselves to appease every customer is sheer fantasy.
