My PLEA, Petition, Request to CRK

@ Muaddib1116 if you're willing to do an Ankerson style heads up test against a Crk stock Ht S35V we'll do it.

I was just saying I'd like to see what you purchased at a gun show that has outperformed a CRK. I'm not challenging you to anything.

I just don't see Mr. Reeve changing his general philosophy due to pressure from a forum thread. He's a stubborn one.

And thats a good thing. One reason he makes the best production folder made.

@Straight shooter you can only be stubborn for so long.,, before long their pocket books suffer. The problem is in our modern society there are way too many fan boys to stoke a maketers ego; and that is not a jab directly at CRK. The fact is when I can go to a local gun show and purchase a no name 440C that out performs a world renowned makers super steel due to HT then there is a prob.... The only thing lacking is customer push back. Most people don't want to admit they have an expensive piece that can be out performed by a production piece.

edit- I disagree. Better just leave it at that.

Aye, totally. He's only been making the Sebenza for +25 years so those pocket books will be up for a bit of suffering any time now, right ? :D....

Please also indicate how this test was performed and what the actual results were, otherwise it's just and empty statement that is worth nothing. Pictures of the two knives would help us believe you too. :)

I do love how easy it is to sharpen s35vn but I also do love sharpening all my knives no matter the steel. That being said I won't stop buying CRK's. But I also wouldn't mind one in M4!

Paul Bos Heat Treat.... run by Paul Farner now..... same great work though. Keep in mind with his setup, 60 is as high as he can go with S30/35. In my opinion, that hardness has been perfection.

Did you have to remove the thumbstud yourself, or did they do that for you? If you did it, could you explain how you got it out, and back in? Thanks..

I own the 21 and 25, the 25 I have had for 1 week..I have noticed a difference in edge strength and edge holding, both favoring the 25..
Since owning the 25 I have cut a bunch of stuff, from heavy duty zip ties, light copper wiring, hard, dried mullberry, bale twine and lots of cardboard..Before I cut anything, I re-profiled the edge to 17 per, finished on 400 grit edge pro stone, strop to remove bur.
Real quick I broke down a TV box, made 250 long cuts into the heavy cardboard (ran out of cardboard), slicing into it with ease, and at the end, there was zero edge damage and still sliced phone book paper easily..
Me being OCD about my edge popping hair, 3 swipes per side on the strop with green compound and it brought the edge back with great bite, and hair popping sharp..pretty impressed.

I just use a pin punch and hammer. Really simple as that to take it out. If you don't take it out, he will just leave it in. The stud itself turns a yellowish color after HT.

I've only put one back in as I use different studs on my Seb's. However I just basically put it back in the way I took it out.... minus the pin punch. Used a little padding to not scratch anything.

I've heard this from a few friends that own 25's and 21's. All say the steel seems to perform better... as if it's a bit harder.

Did you notice a difference in sharpening? Easier or harder than the 21? Or about the same?

Can this be attributed to thin hollow grind on the 21 vs high flat grind of the 25? Has anyone ever mic'd the two behind the edge in comparison? I'd be curious to see the difference.

I have never measured it, but the 21 is pretty thin by looking down the edge, the 25 has what looks a little bit more meat behind the edge..As far as sharpening, the 25 seems to take a little longer to profile then the 21 did, but what I noticed was the 25 never rolled on the same things the 21 did..Also the 25 holds a hair popping edge longer, maybe CRK bumped up the RC a point or two? 25 holds an edge as well as my military..

I am perfectly happy to leave the design and manufacturing and business operating decisions to the man. I recognize that he is far more knowledgable about these things than me (I?). It is his world, I'm just happy I get to play in it.

Could it be that he is doing the heat treatment the way he is to minimise blades warping? I only thought this after seeing the post about the 25 and my understanding is that it is almost a flat grind and therefore has a bit more steel in the blade. Would this mean he could heat treat it differently and raise the hardness?

I have very little idea about these things and am just curious...

I trust Chris to make the decision for Sebenza, and I'll just go with it happily - after all I don't have 25+ yrs experience in knife making, nor have I seen a knife as perfect as a Sebenza. Super steels are awesome, no doubt, but I depend on the Mule project from Spyderco for tests with the supersteel. I don't want anything changed in the Sebenza that Chris does not want to. :-)

I interesting thread. I own a couple Sebenza Small models and for my daily needs the steel suffices just fine and I'm never that far away from being able to sharpen it.

I'm sure others may not be. Offering a different steel as a "custom shop" option would be nice I think. The way some other makers do for those who want something out of the norm and are willing to pay for it.

For the Umnamzaan, I'd just like to see it in a small version. That'd please me.
