I carry some condoms in my pack, they don't take much room, can be used to carry water AND in emergency situations. :D

add a small roll of duct or gorilla tape. a couple of heavy duty garbage bags can serve as poncho or waterproof shelter too.

go to a hobby store and add a small glue stick(from glue gun) ,I think their like 1/4" dia. x 3"L and you can use bic lighter to heat up and make temp repairs on clothing, tarps, tent, etc. for rips

I like the Miox. We use chemical treatment a lot in South America and the Miox has done a good job on a couple of trips.

Yea, I took a trip in november with bkduckworth and Joe flowers, and was in the market for a filter at the time. When I compared Joe's Msr Mini works ex to Brandon's Miox, the miox came out the clear winner.

One thing I was worried about was how waterproof the unit is? have you ever had anything bad happen from water spilling down over the unit when you fill it?

Also, Should I worry about that little bendy tab that contacts the batterys? seems to be a little stiff, and I do not want to break it taking the batterys out when I get through using the filter for the season.

the miox pen is awesome!!!! i liked mine while i had it. Im using the steripen right now and when its super cold outside i miss my miox pen.

This seems like a fitting time to ask about what a good light use (weekend trips) water filter/filtration system is? I'm looking for something to fit easily in my Falcon II (along with all other overnight gear) and something reliable. After looking at the Miox Pen, the first thing that stands out is the $139 price tag, is that a normal price for a top-end filter?

Excellent Idea, man where have I been?? I've never even heard about this before...

thanks for the tip

OP: excellent post/kit, love mora knives.. this is what its all about folks, thinking out of the box...:D..

Good looking kit! It's a really good size yet big enough to still add some more items. A few things that you could think of adding in the future could be some duct tape, signal mirror, 1qt water bags, a small fishing kit (including braided line). BestGlide.com makes some pretty good fishing kits that are pretty cheap and compact.

it's expensive but there's a difference between "filter" and "purifier". from cody lundin's book (and also from the epa), a "filter" needs to remove 99.99% of contaminants whereas a "purifier" needs to remove 99.99999%...a purifier is 1,000 times as effective as a filter hence the higher price.

i guess what it comes down to is how dirty is the water source where you'll potentially find yourself in? i just carry a bandanna as a filter and jetboil to boil water (for drinking and food) and carry chlorine bleach in a small container as well as tabs as backup.

Have a look at the products from Katadyn/Micropur. They have a nice lightweight series too, good products.

If you want to travel very light, learn how to improvise water filters and boil your water/carry their Micropur tablets (the orange ones are safer, though water doesn't taste too good). For clean streaming water you need no more than the tablets.

On the ESEE site, the guys have a Survival Craft tab on the top- follow the Survival Info link, and there's an article about water purification. They review the Katadyn Vario and the MSR MIOX pen, and have good things to say about both. Granted, it is a couple years old- I'd be interested to know if this is still their recommendation, or if they've moved on...

I have the Vario & it is a great unit,I had the pro hiker and it was good but again still had a few issues with it ,so I tried the Vario and I love it, It is a mainstay in my pack due to water is very important and the weight is worth it to me
