I am seriously considering a Commander. I'd like to hear from the group on what you think of this knife as an EDC, with the primary purpose as defense.

Thanks in advance.

If you like it, get it, it is iconic.. There are better Emerson EDC and defense options IMO.

I think the 15 is a scaled down (curve wise) Commander that would suit you better in both areas.

At the end though get what you like, and that'll serve you best

Get it. With serrations.
I carry my commander 2nd to my HD7.
Any knife can be used for defense. So can a screw driver.

You won't be disappointed. The commander is the knife I carry 90% of the time along with a 7.

Most comfortable handle of the Emerson knives I have handled with the tiger and 13 a close second.

Complicated and a hassle to sharpen because of the recurve, get a tanto or more classic style blade. Emersons are definitely the best folders for self defense but I find the recurves are annoying to sharpen.

Heads up about all Emersons though, they are built for heavy use and low/easy maintenance. They are also highly effective, rugged, and tough.

Having said that, if you are looking for a knife with a smooth action and beautiful fit and finish so you can take it out and admire it all the time, look elsewhere.

IMO you should get an Emerson, but be an informed buyer.

If you are looking for a knife that looks totally badass and tacticool (not that there is anything wrong with that) then maybe look at ZT's, Benchmades, and Spydercos.

However, if you want a knife that navy seals confidently carry into combat go with an Emerson.

Its no secret that Ernie sacrifices some visual appearance for simplicity of maintenance, but have you ever tried field maintenance on an axis lock? :)

I'm not concerned so much about sharpening a recurve. A very narrow India stone and a steel should work ok.

I may just place an order. From whom should I make the purchase of this fine blade?

X2. The 15 is three knives in one. A true Emerson beginner needs a tanto edge like a 7,15, etc...to start with. The essence of Emerson is learned by Tanto ownership.

In the beginning there was the 6 and it was good. Then the 6 produced a offspring and it was the 7 and it was even better.

Are all of the Emersons chiseled edged? I checked out the above recommended site, and I believe it said conventional edge.

They are all chisel edge. Some are v ground blades but only sharpened on one side.

The only chisel ground ones currently in production that I know off hand are the 7 and bulldog.

This is a V grind 7 with a chisel edge.

I carry a Commander ALL DAY... EVERYDAY, for me it's the " perfect Emerson ".

Anybody that tells you recurves are a pain to sharpen... needs to LEARN how to sharpen.
