My Possibly First Emerson

Any opinions on the Super, too large for EDC?

The answer to this question is really up to you. I have had a few variants of the Commander over the years. The only one I have now is the super. I like it's size more than the standard ones and gets carried in my right rear pant pocket with no issues and Waves out of pocket easily. Size is very comfortable, so are the standard ones. 50/50 with the serrations in regards to like/dislike. I wear size 9/medium gloves.

Get it. With serrations.
I carry my commander 2nd to my HD7.
Any knife can be used for defense. So can a screw driver.

I second this.

Except for the serrations. While Ernie recommends them, Michael Janich's and my own "pork man" tests consistently show that even good serrations usually catch or bunch up on clothing, hindering the effectiveness of the cut.

Also some extra food for thought:

Consider the legal repercussions of explaining why you carry a "self defense" or "combat" knife instead of a "utility" knife.

Some legal scenarios will consider that intent to inflict harm. I personally prefer the philosophy that using any object as a weapon is secondary to why i had it in the first place. Like Rolf's "any knife" or screwdriver.

If i slice a guy up with my Spyderco Dodo, i can hope to use the reasoning that i had to use whatever was at hand to defend my life. My utility tool.

If i use a DorkOps Throatslitter Covert Stealth 7 Combat Bloodletter Dagger, i can most definitely expect the sheeple judging me to be alot less understanding. Why was i carrying a knife designed and marketed for inflicting harm on a human being?

Wording is everything.

And before someone posts the cliche "Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six," put some real thought into that statement. Those jury members arent into knives. They dont train. They are not like us and they will not always understand concepts that us higher evolved knife knuts simply understand as god given common sense. Plan ahead for the worst. Cover your ass. Self defense starts long before a confrontation takes place and continues long after the physical fight. Self defense is about awareness.

Sorry bout the sidetrack. Just some things my eyes have been recently opened to that i honestly never really objectively considered before. I try to pass on these kinds of things to those interested.

But yeah, cant go wrong with the iconic, flagship, Commander. Good luck and enjoy!

Thx.

OP, the Commander is a great design, but the handle doesn't work for everyone.

If you can't hold the knife before buying, I'd recommend going with a CQC-7.

I was surprised that the 7 had such a short blade.

For reference, the cutting edge of the CQC-7 is about the same length of the cutting edge on a large Sebenza. Overall length of both is about the same as well. However, the CQC-7 has more useable handle to hold onto.

The chisel ground CQC-7B cuts very well and couldn't be easier to sharpen.

Or guns.

A good friend of mine was attacked by four guys with baseball bats a few years ago.

He shot one of them to death (45 ACP in the chest) in what seemed like clear cut self defense. He was charged with second degree murder.

After four years of court cases & almost $100,000 in legal bills & one mistrial, he was finally acquitted. He told me he could have run away from the altercation if he planned it a little better & would damn sure pick that option in the future.

I just found a local shop with an CQC-7 Super non serrated for $199. What do y'all think of that price? And what do you think about the CQC-7 Super?

Price doesn't seem too bad for a super 7, though you could probably beat it with minimal Google skills, or they do occasionally pop up on the forums.
Did you get a chance to hold it?
That will be your answer on whether to get it or not. I still have one CQC-7 and have sold a couple and for me the handle just doesn't work out, but as many have stated it works great for them. I greatly prefer the handle of the commander, but that is only my opinon. Go hold a couple of Emersons because when it comes down to it, only you can answer the question on which one to get.

I believe I would rather have the commander, but I can't seem to find one locally.

The business recommended above is out of stock.

There are plenty of retailer's that have them in stock just checked bhq and gpk and both have them.

Guys, thx for all the camaraderie and for going out of your way to help each other out.

I may just pick up 2 Emersons. I just called and put the CQC-7 Super on layaway,. I'll pick it up tomorrow.

I also may just acquire a Commander.

That's great! Commanders are quite comfy with a secure grip. I am more fond of the Super than the regular sized model. Here's a picture of my Super Commander in hand (I wear medium gloves).
