I have wanted to make a bowie for myself for the longest time. I would give it a try every once in awhile, end up with something that wasn't quite a bowie, and put the project away. Well today I finally decided to give it another go and I think I got it this time. Comments and critique welcome. Damn JP and his big mongo Hell's Belle thread :D.

Stan

looks very nice, though I must admit I prefer clip pt over drop more belly to cut w/

Thanks guys!

Stan :D:D:D

Neb I do too, but I can never get them to look right, always end up looking like a KABAR.

Jason, Aldo's 1084, the original smelt.

Absolutely horrible. Tell you what, I'll take it off your hands so you don't have to look at that eye sore. ;)

In all seriousness I like it, a LOT! Do you want some wrought iron for the guard? I'll send you a chuck for just shipping cost bud.

Thanks Dan (nice try:))! I got PILES of wrought, wagon wheels out the ass and some 1/2" round bar, now I can finally use it! I have some sweet sugar maple I look forward to using on this blade also.

According to the cigarette lighter its onlly a little over 3 cigarette lighters long, you call that a Bowie? :D
Hey I really like it Sam, can't wait too see how you finish it out!

Thanks everyone! You guys are FUNNY :D

Dixie, that is one of those small little lighters too.

Dan, I sure will! I'll bring some rope to cut too.

Got the guard, handle, ferrule/spacer, and even a little tiny habaki type brass spacer done today! The wrought iron was tricky, tried forging a piece but it just came apart (very nasty gnarly wagon wheel wrought iron, the good stuff :D) so I had to grind one out, finished it with planishing while cold which gives a very antique yet shiny look, and the wrought has all these natural slag bits and pits and streaks. The sugar maple piece I cut is STUNNING! I do need to work out a way to bring out the iridescence. It has alot of quilting/chatoyance (that 3D shimmer), and the grain is lined up EXCELLENT. I still have to filework the ferrule/spacer, and then drill the hole for the tang and glue it all up. Camera is not being nice tonight, so bear with me.

Here is a shot of the little "crown", made from brass

Looking good Sam, I'll bet its even better all together! What is the blade length and the OA? And I promise no more lighter jokes! :D

I don't know what it is about Bowies , but they make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Great looking blade Sam

Thanks guys!

Don, that is big praise coming from you (except for the photo thing hehe). This one might be nice enough to send out to someone for a nice photo.
