My quest for the bowie

Sam that is going to be a real nice Bowie. You can do a good pic!
I have learned that its all in the lighting and a little editing! :) I don't have a light box, so try to do most of mine with outside light. I use my wife's Canon Power Shot SX100 IS. It's not the most expensive gift I ever bought my wife but it is one of the most used by myself! :p
The editing program sucks but I have another editing program for an older Kodak that doesn't take as quality of a picture but has a better editing program.
I have learned one thing if the quality is not their when you see the pic on the display there is not alot you can do with the editing. I usually take several and then choose the best for keeping once I see them in editing!

Thanks for the tips Dixie, My problem is I have a stone age GEN1 digital camera, and tend to take pictures at night when I am done with the work :D I'll borrow my Dad's quickshot or my brother's SLR when it's all done and shoot some good shots (or have them do it, the photography gene sorta skipped a generation :D).

Finished (mostly)! Got all the finish work done today, just have to glue it up and that is it! Though the fit is tight enough it doesn't need glue, but just for safety's sake. It feels great, light but with heft, well balanced too and it cuts real well. Put a single filework groove all around the ferrule/spacer, simple but clean. I left the wrought unetched, but it still shows the rough bits and discolorations that make wrought so special, the ferrule/spacer was also left rough, but everything is scotch brite polished so it is rough but clean. It is, I can honestly say, my best work to date. Enjoy, thanks for following, comments and critique always welcome

I like it a lot as is, but are you planning on finishing the maple after Ashokan? With or without stain? At least a clear oil finish would probably help keep the handle looking good in the future.

Looks great Sam....
You asked so I will lend my 2 cents. I think your ricasso is a bit long. I also think you need to get a new makers mark(maybe something that would fit a shorter ricasso). 100 years from now no one will know who "SS" is. If YOU are proud of your work put YOUR name on it!:D
That handle looks like it's screeming for some dye and oil.
Wish I was going to Ashokan this year so I could check this one out up close.

Thanks everyone!

Dan, I am not sure how to finish it, I want to bring out the iridescence more, but I don't know how. I like how it is the blonde color, I don't want to make it darker unless I need to to bring out the best in the wood.

Mace, thanks for the suggestions. My mark is a bit outdated, suitable for blacksmith work but not refined for knife work. Like I said, I am not sure how to bring out the best in the wood, my photos are shit it really is much nicer in person :D
