My rant about video reviews

So because I carry a knife, and use it every day at work to open packages, cut zip ties, etc, and it doesn't look like I took it to Afghanistan and back, that means I'm not qualified to give my opinion on the knife? Get over yourself...

If a knife is really used and carried over time it will get some tell tale wear marks on it.

No it doesn't have to look like someone ran over it with a tank a few times, but there will be signs of use.

So if one is saying they used their knife for X amount of time and it still looks like a NIB knife that still has the factory edge on it people will begin to question it naturally.

Yeah, there are some real stinker reviews out there. However, every once in a while, I stumble on some very good ones too. Just last night, I found a guy who was actually out in the woods using the knives I was interested in... Little talking, mostly using, and very informative too.

Gotta love the internets for that.

Really guys, I'm not jealous. If I realy felt I needed a Strider or something, I would just buy one.

Yeah, the size comparison is nice during a review, such as to say, "here's a Paramilitary 2 next to the xxxx to show you a size comparison." I'm talking about the guys that have 5 or 6 knives sitting on the table while they open a package, discuss their camera problems, talk about their cat, etc. That is just showing off.

And I understand that you can carry a knife for 3 months and use it very little. I just think one should acknowledge that instead of going on and on about how "this is the strongest lock out of all of my knives" and that kind of thing...

LOL... Not at all. My wife, I mean we, have one too. But maybe they should have like 5 or 6 cat toys lined up instead.

Don't sweat it, medic. It only sounds like jealousy to people who want you to be jealous of the knives they own. Knives are not mansions or yachts, and Sebbies and the like are pretty damn cheap compared to the actual expensive and rare pieces.

Lotta hatin' going on... So I will jump in, I hate when the knife is out of the box new and it's perp'd like it's a hard use beater. Or I really hate this "Yeah, I saw this Kershaw at WalMart in the 7.99 bin and it's bad azz! I don't know what steel it is but the plastic handle looks good." I do think most are doing it for fun and I really don't see a problem with that...

I get a lot of use out of video reviews. It quickly shows you a three dimensional view of the knife and its the best way to get an idea of the size of the knife. I feel they shouldnt be longer than 10 minutes though. I dont watch Nutn anymore because his are now like 40 mins long or something ridiculous like that. As to whether they use em hard or not, there are plenty of demo vids around if that's your thing.

+1 and Nutnfancy should consider shorter videos... he rambles a lot.

I saw a review today where a guy was clowing on nutnfancy for his review on a high end blade before opening the exact same blade. He then ended up returning it a few days later for the reasons nutn pointed out... I personally believe there are allot of worse places to get info than nutn...

*** before I get flamed, I also do not think nutn is the pope of cutlery...

I actually think he knows a fair amount about knives. I just also think he's a bit of an egotistical windbag. I don't usually have enough desire for the former to deal with the latter.

I find that some reviews are useful, especially the ones that show the owner using or at least where the reviewer tells of his experience using the knives(credibility comes in as a factor here).

The tabletop reviews, IMHO, are just *mostly* bragging(Hey look, I gotta new one).

There are very few reviewers who say anything useful. I normally mute them (and then skip past the first few minutes of still shot of the box it comes in...).
This is exactly why I don't even do unboxings in my reviews, and if I just received the knife, it gets label as " Initial Impressions ". I try and do my reviews while making sure I don't do the very things that drive me crazy from other reviews. So for alot of them have been mentioned. Poor lighting and shaky cameras is what drives me crazy. I am watching a video to see the knife!

As far as cutting computer paper I don't consider my knife sharp if thats all it can barely cut. Phone book paper at the least. And when I do an actual review, I actually put the knife to work for at least two weeks. Alot of times more. I try and make valid points, cutting ability, ergonomics, how it feels while you are cutting, how it holds up ect.

And there are alot of people ( I won't state names ) who make an eight minute video, just drawing out the specs on the knife. I can get all that info on a website in thirty seconds.

BAHAHAHAHA! So true!

+1 I have recorded a few, and never felt right about uploading them :D.

I made and uploaded one because a few friends chipped in to give me a knife at a time when I was really down. I just wanted to show them I got it.

That's different I think. I just don't have the patience usually to watch someone open the box :D.
