My rant about video reviews

You got something against cats?

Seems like a lot of guys on here have cats. Not a lot of love for dogs here on this forum. Most, mentions of dogs on this forum are in practical tactical and about the most effective knife to use on a dog. :(

I want to know whats the most effective knife to use on a cat? Maybe a lot of the "guys" on here are actually old cat ladies. Dogs are better than cats, they have utility.

The thing I hate about video reviews is that... They're video reviews. Most of the time the information could be presented more succinctly and with less loading through a couple of paragraphs and still pictures.

With few exceptions, video reviews are in video because it is easier to hold a camera and talk than it is to type. They present the same information with a less searchable, less convenient delivery method.

I like the video reviews (most of them). Where I live I don't get a chance to see many of the nicer Spydercos and Benchmades much less others. Seeing them, testing them, giving an opinion on them are all cool and useful to me. I happen to think the video quality is pretty good, too. If I'm watching a video and become disinterested after 3 minutes of looking at an unopened box, I skip forward or go to the next or shut it off. If someone is showing off his knives, even that's not so bad. That's one reason we buy them. Still, I prefer the ones that have less show off in them. MY point of view --- you don't want to watch it, don't watch it. No one's forcing you to. Heck, making some videos might be sort of combining two hobbies. I sometimes wonder if a few video makers sometimes get tired of making the videos. So, it's almost a public service. I less prefer the ones without clearly stated opinions. Comparing knives or actually rating a knife is very useful (and fun for me), especially from one who knows a lot about blades, knifes, and so on (even if I disagree with the rating). I've never made a YouTube video but that's my 02 cents. No disrespect to anyone intended.

But, yes, this board is great, too. Some here are very helpful.

Dogs are fine, but I don't love having a pet that demands I be there every time it poops.

The thing that drives me crazy more than anything is when the "reviewer" has obviously not put any fore thought in to what they want to say. I can't stand ...umm...uhhhhh...ok...so anyway... I also find it a waste of time when they get facts wrong, or just don't know any. "I think this is some kind of carbon steel or something... But I'm not sure..." Why are you doing this review then? Epic fail! Skip to next video.

There are a few guys out there that actually do a good job. I like table top reviews if they are done well, with good camera work, and have good info and DO NOT ramble. I enjoy coverage of the specs, and seeing lots of close up shots and comparisons of knives that I am interested in.

Just my two cents.

My knife videos are not necessarily reviews but my charming personality makes up for it.

My dog never made me watch it poop, thats weird. Cats poop in the house, in a box, that pisses me off.

Ya, I hate the "Um." That pisses me off too.

Cats > Dogs

I like all furry creatures, but cats are awesome because they are so low maintenance. I free feed mine and clean his litter box every other day, he takes care of the rest. Dogs are fun to play with when I go over to a friend's house, but to take care of one was a real pain the butt (just like small children).

I actually think he knows a fair amount about knives. I just also think he's a bit of an egotistical windbag. I don't usually have enough desire for the former to deal with the latter.

My take exactly. I cannot wait half an hour for a tiny nugget of blade lore when there are better reviews that only take ten minutes and say more real information.

When it comes to knife reviewers showcasing their collection I honestly don't mind. I love seeing people have a collection even if they have duplicates, I see your point of how they're showing off...but since its their video and review I think they deserve bragging rights..at least they're not showing off to the point where "Hah! I got one and you don't, stick that in your pipe and smoke it" :D. It also helps to see how the knife compares with other knives in general.

While I do agree that Nutnfancy knows some stuff about knives, he misleads a lot of people on knives mistaking them to serve a specific genre when they're not supposed to. He talks about knives in "tactical" use like he has tons of experience in CQC, he bitches about weight, like he's doing some espionage work, he talks absolute garbage for minutes on end, he has an annoying air of arrogance that makes me wanna punch my screen sometimes.

I've stated this before, but BF members here with 10 posts or less know much more than him. In all honesty trust your own judgment rather than nutnfancy (thats such an eff'd up girly youtube id)

You want to see a good review vid. Look up BLUNTTRUTH4U, now that crazy bastard will show you a knifes' limits with absolutely no bullsh*t. That guy is a real pleasure to watch :D

I will throw in "buttery smooth" - - - and "sexy"....it's like everyone uses the same kewllll words. Even fourteen/fifteen year old kids say it. I've never thought of my screw drivers or sockets etc. as "sexy" or when I cut something think to myself "oh, this is buttery smooth (the pivot)." As for the OP's original post, there are quite a few that do exactly like he said and I totally understand what he means.

And as for the response to the OP, I'm know I'm not jealous, why should I be? No one knows how many knives I have because that is MY business and when I eventually do a video or 500 I know for a fact that I won't have my knives lined up to review a knife. Most everyone that watches knife videos know the size comparisons, heck if you don't most adults have tape measures - it is very easy to get a mental picture with a tape measure instead of having XM's/Striders etc. sitting all lined up in a row...lol...I think it's funny myself.. Good topic, that's my take.

I'm going to going to make you see blue with this pic then:

You would actually be pretty surprised at how well the CRK stone washing hides scratches on the blade.

+1. I'd also throw in cutting printer paper.

I'll touch on one more thing you talked about below. I agree about the "I've edc'd this knives for five yrs:rolleyes:" and it looks like it just came out of the box...lol. The ones that do that (and we all know who they are) aren't fooling me or anyone else, I could just about bet many of those reviewers would never use their expensive knifes on cutting a radiator hose or puncturing a gas tank which you have to do (just learned this last week) when you're junking a car at a recycling place. My Three Sisters Forge went right through my grandpa's gas tank and my kid used my HEST to do another tank. I never see any of these knives with any evidence of really being used. And FWIW I'm not targeting any one reviewer, there are too many out there to pick on just one or two. I'm done.:)

Browsing videos online, review after review has these guys reviewing a particular blade, with $2000 worth of Sebenzas, Striders, etc. sitting on the 'Chris Reeve' cloth below them, just so they can be shown off. I get it, you spend an exorbitant amount of money on knives. And all these reviewers state that they "have EDC'ed this blade exclusively for the last 3 months..." when there clearly isn't so much as a fingerprint on any of the knives. I agree, these knives are cool, but they're just tools guys. Get out there and have some fun with them! And if it's just a fancy collector's collection, that's cool too. Just don't profess how you "hard use" all your knives. How can you be an expert on what makes a good knife when you're sitting inside making videos all the time? Cutting paper, cardboard or rope gives you very little indication of how good a knife is. Everyone makes fun of Nutnfancy, but at least he gets out there and plays a little.

FWIW you do good reviews IMO.

That is usually pretty useless on a desktop type review...... I have cut around 1,000 FT of cardboard and was still able to cut printer paper with some knives....

NIB knife cuts paper....... Really? ........ Well it should be sharp enough to do that at least.

WOW it's sharp....

Well it should be, it's NEW and unused.....

Good post. Thanks for the heads up on the UTube fella, I'll check him out.

I, for one, appreciate that people take the time to make video reviews. Seeing a knife in a video gives a better sense of the size than just seeing pictures or reading specs. Not many (any) knife shops around here. If I were to complain it'd be that by the time I look up a knife on youtube I already know the basic specs and I'm not really interested in how sharp it is out of box.

I'm on board with that, but any insight into how the knife functions
or feels in hand is taken with a grain of salt, if anything it will get me
curious enough to jump on it. Have to be critical of the information
conveyed in the videos and if it suits me.

Some reviewers are annoying as heck and those I just mute and see
how the knife looks in different angles, or if I get really annoyed- on
to the next one.

There have been plenty of times where I have been sold on the
performance of the knife by someone doing cardboard or rope
cutting tests; so for me it serves a purpose.
