I posted a cell phone pic of this in my other thread but I thought I would give this knife its' own thread and hear what you guys think. It is 440C with nickel silver bolsters, black paper micarta scales and two 1/4" 304L pins. Blade is .166" thick, 1.875" wide, and 4.875" tip to bolster. Overall length is 9.125". My biggest issue with this knife is the secondary bevel is not as clean as I'd like. I cut this edge in by hand with diamond files but, I am going to order an Edgepro professional system to address this issue on future knives. I am very open to critique as long as you provide a solution to fix the problems you point out. It's much more helpful that way. Thanks for looking.

Bob

BTW- Can I wax the scales to get a better shine? It seems like the paper micarta should have more luster after buffing out.

From all the time you spent watching, learning and doing, I knew it would come out good but I think it came out even better than expected. Great job!

that is awesome for a knife much less a second knife, well done
and i am not sure on the paper micarta, i just got some in and i'm going to see if i can get it to buff, i would suggest to test a piece of scrap and see what happens,

Are the pins and bolster the same material ?

Maybe some reflection on the bolster that makes it seem more yellow brassy and the pins more silvery ?

Really nice job!

Crisp, clean, a little curve where it matters.....no whistles and bells.....a total class act.

I'd leave the Micarta as it is. Maybe buff it by hand with a soft cotton cloth while watching TV ( tape up the blade).

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I keep getting more and more excited about knifemaking!

Count,

The 1/4" pins in the scales are 304L and the bolsters are nickel silver. I think it is easier to see the difference in the photo than in person. The bolsters are picking up a lot of my ceiling (which is kind of an adobe brown) which could be making any difference appear exaggerated. I don't know how much the nickel silver will patina over time so I may need to take that into consideration on future knives.

Excellent blade. Looks like Mr. Stout rubbed off on you nicely. Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future!

Good looking knife. The micarta should end up with a glassy finish - maybe keep going finer with the grits when buffing. On fiberglass boat molds I used to go all the way to a pink buffing compound with a 2500 rpm buffers and lams wool pads.

Very nice looking knife! Great proportions and material choices. If you were going for a skinner? I suggest a little more belly in the blade.

Micarta, Paper, linen or canvas can be buffed with rouge or waxed no problem. Floor wax or Auto wax works great!

I must of made over 1000-1300 knives with micarta handles and I became really sensitive to it and can't have it in the shop at all any more. Even with a respirator if I get a little wiff of the formaldehyde that get released when you work itI start getting a screaming headache.
Please be careful and always wear your Protective gear and vacuum out the dust from the shop.

You can play with the different grit finishes with sandpaper. If the customer wanted it really grippy? I would use Canvas and stop at 120-220 grit hand sanding. If if was a request for something in the middle I would use Linen with going to 400grit paper. For paper like you have used you can go up to 2000 grit hand sanding and buff with white rouge for a bone/Ivory look/

Keep at it! You are doing great!
