My Sheath Cracked... :(

it will hold if i do it right :D. the hard part it getting the glue not only on the out side, and a little inside the crack, but inside the sheath, the other side of the crack, for more "holdage" :D

i think it cracked by therm. shock. i have it wrapped in para and i wanted the para to be very tight on it so i got the cord wet and dryed it with a toaster :D. and then i relized i didn't have enough water on it so i went to put more water on it and i think it was to hot, because i think thats when it craked.

i also wrapper my SW. if only i have a camera.... :(

Drill a hole at the end of the crack, fill the crack with glue then use a thin strip of Kydex or other suitably tough cloth/material to wrap either around the sheath or inline with the crack. Then use some more glue on this material so it becomes bonded to the sheath. Sort of like carbonfibre or fibreglass construction? Would over-strengthen the area of the crack so that it didn't simply continue to split at the end of the crack. The hole allows the end of the crack to stablize, it's a technique used in bell repairs.

royalm that was very good advice. the drill trick is a very good idea. thank you.

i dont have any extra kydex any recomendations on house hold material??? i dont have a work shop supplied with stuff :D

You've got a thing for that toaster, don't ya? LOL

Next time, set the toaster to BLUE. (Remember when toasters had colors instead of numbers? I do. Dad brought home our new toaster and was telling me how this one had a switch to set the "color" of the toast. Of course he meant light brown to dark brown. I saw the lever and the color scale and asked for some blue toast. ROTFL!!! Hey, I was 5.)

Since you don't have scraps of kydex laying around, drill the end of the crack and super glue the edges back together. Be sure to clean the area with rubbing alcohol or similar to eliminate any oils or other crud to help the glue hold inside the crack.
Next, get a piece of canvas or similar thin, tough material (nylon strap, old web belt, etc.) and trim it to about an inch in width and a bit longer than the width of the sheath. Load this up with epoxy (get it all the way through the material) and lay it around the mouth of the sheath, then wrap it all up in plastic wrap and compress it between a few folded towels to make sure it bonds to the contours of the sheath. Let it set for a couple days to cure the epoxy and peel off the plastic wrap. A fine toothed file and some 320 grit sandpaper will dress the edges all pretty again!

thats alot of work, but ill do it. :D my dad as alot of epoxys any certain kind? (i dont know anything about them)

Personally, I don't think just the Super Glue will hold up very long (as in minutes). Holmesmade's way would be much better, but you may have to re-fit the whole sheath to the knife to get the knife to stay in when it gets jostled around. I can't find your link to the picture from your earlier post - can you post it again? Also, why did you want the Para Cord around it at first? Did the sheath not fit well or did you just want it wrapped? Thanks.

I can help. First off keep it away from any toasters!!;) You need three things. A good epoxy( I used a 1000lb version that happens to be blk, but whatever your POPs has got will probably work) A file and some fine sand paper.
First I roughed up the cracked area with the file. On this sheath I actually cracked a good portion nearly off so I removed the infected area with a hot exacto knife. Next mix the epoxy then glob it on the area. Doesnt have to be even, the excess will come off later. DONT LEAVE THE KNIFE IN THE SHEATH!!
You may have a little trouble getting it out later.Just make sure to cover the area well. Next let it set. Id give it an hour though some say it sets in less this seems like a safe amount of time to me. When dry insert the blade as far as you can. It probably wont go all the way in which is fine. You just want to see how much of the epoxy to remove. Now get that file and start removing what you need to gwet the knife back in. Dont remove too much you want the blade tight. When youve got the tension just a little tighter than you want get your sand paper and remove the excess. It wont look perfect but it wont be all that obvious.Should be stronger than before. This blade can hold even upside down( as is the case with you SW).Good luck bro.

send it back to the maker, I know he has an ironclad guarantee.

its really your best option

You can always get some large shrink wrap ( for wiring ) .you can use a torch or hair dryer to form fit it .

Hey BG. Superglue works GREAT on Kydex. It will fuse it together very well. It almost 'melts' the kydex and fuses it. It will work

Shoot, send that skelly over and I will make you a new one for free.
I have a ton of scraps that size.

I have no toaster proof warranty though...:D

Email me if you are interested.. kergmitchell@cox.net

I say, "GO WITH THE TOASTER, MAN!" :D
