Due to all the crimes being committed here in Salinas + 3 shootings so far tonight with at least 1 bullet finding the head of a 19yr old Hispanic my wife tonight has seized my Maverick 88 that I bought when I came home in 91' from the Army as her own...now being shotgunless the CFO said I can get another...help me shotgunners find a new home defense shotgun, it must be California Democratic approved and I have no clue as to what is out there in a home defense shotgun  must haves: action slide bars on each side (Mav88 has only 1)and be able to spit out slugs otherwise I am open to ideas with no $$ limit, auto or pump does not matter...please post pics andor links :D

The remington 12 pump is good, the auto is good too.
(870 and 1100)

I always thought a semi auto 16 gauge would be perfect for combat.
I dont know if there are any around, but it might be ....

Ahh, here we go:
http://www.remington.com/firearms/shotguns/1100_classicfield.htm

Get the 16 gauge, chop the barrel down to 19", get a tube extension so it will hold 8 rounds and you are good to go!
Load it with #1 shot, have a nice night sight bead put on the front, etc...

Personally I think there is nothing, but nothing worse or more frightening than the sound of a pump shotgun of any guage being racked in the dark.

Also nothing more dangerous than a shotgun at relatively close range.

Relatively cheap when compared to other weapons and incredibly powerful. Even bird shot at 10 feet or so is going to make a mess.

"Clean in and dirty out."

I have heard that African hunters when going into the bush after a large wounded predator will carry a 12 guage with buckshot rather than their huge double rifle.

A friend in the country had a problem with a big bear destroying his bee hives. He loaded his 12 guage with slugs and waited. He saw the bear walking on all fours through his bee hives.

He had a clear frontal shot and took it. The slug hit the bear in the chest killing it instantly. The slug traveled through the bear's body cavity and completly blew off on of it's back legs. Then the same slug hit one of his remaining bee hives and wiped it out as well.

Well he claimed that all happened and he did have a nice bear skin rug in his cabin floor....

Nothing but the Benelli M-1 Super Tactical, or any variant therof.

With the ghost ring rear.

I'm only risking my opinion because I care.

The Benelli is expensive, but think of it as a "life preserver".

My Mossberg feels like cheap junk by comparision.

Good luck Sweet- yikes. I thought Miami was bad...

The Benelli is a good choice for those with lots of extra money. My HD shotgun is the Remington 870 Police Model with 18" barrel, black parked finish and synthetic stock ($180.00 on sale). I added a Choate 2 shot extender from Brownells (about $20.00 IIRC). Its a fine dependable shotgun loaded with 4/0 buckshot that I bet my life on.

Nothing wrong with a Mossberg, they've been around a long time.:D

About anything you would want in a scattergun.;) :D

The law enforcement series are nice as well but doubt they're available to citizens, din't look though.

Firearms for Law Enforcement and Military Forces Worldwide
Before there was light-kicking "tactical" buckshot, the U.S. Armed Services established Mil-Spec 3443E, a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot.
Only one pump action shotgun was heavy duty enough to pass. Mossberg.

There are many good suggestions already. I'll add one more. Ithaca M37. They are still around. It was military issue years ago. Forged receiver, and holding the trigger down it is as fast as a automatic.

My dad and son, years later, each got one after I bought mine after being discharged.

I had a $200 Mossberg shotgun years ago, and it was a great gun.
I don't even know if they are legal now, but in the 80's they were sold with pistol grip and 18 1/2" barrel.

Fun to shoot.

I like the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870 myself. I have a 500 that I use for hunting, but it has a bad ejector. Once I get home this summer I plan to get it repaired and keep it in my new house for home defense. I agree with Bill Marsh that there are few more dangerous close range weapons than a 12 gauge shotgun.

Arggh. Not attacking the Mossberg- many police use- just saying, shoot a Benelli & see the diff.

Best value- Rem. & Ithaca

Budget/gov. contract- Mossberg

No budget or ;) gift from some one else- Benelli M-1. Shoot one & be happy.

My Mossberg has only 1 guide rail, unlike Remington 870- so the action can twist- the 870, never- it has 2.

must stay out of gun threads- hotter than AK barrel sometimes

Awesome shotgun.

If you dont want to drop all of the cash for one, go with the 870, I think they have a stainless and synthetic version called the "marine" model. Load it up with some Federal 00 buckshot, or Federal #1 buckshot If your worried about penetrating walls.

Use what you like- no problemo.

Personally, Benellis kick the crap out of me. I put close to 100 12 ga rounds downrange in one session, a few years ago, most of it from a Benelli. My right bicep swelled up to at least 2x the normal size! I looked like Popeye for a couple weeks.

I'm partial to my Ghost-ring Mossberg 500. It is very fast, but still more accurate than a bead could ever be. The only change I've made, is switching out the too-long standard synthetic stock for a Cadet shorter stock.

Took a running deer through heavy brush with a Remington Reduced Recoil slug with this shotgun, in '03. When I say "heavy brush", it was so heavy that I could barely see Byron as he stood there, not more than 15 meters away, when we picked her up. I think I shot her just behind the head, because that's all I could see...

John

(edit- incidentally, I'm no fan of buckshot anymore. I tend to shoot either the Remington Reduced Recoil, or the Kent-loaded Brenneke, pretty much exclusively.)

I second the Remington 870. I also put a Choate extension tube on mine (+2), and a short, 18" barrel. I think that the combo works best with a plain bead up front. this is as fast a sight combo as you can have, and you don't need to line anything up at less than 10 yards. Just put the bead on it, and it is destroyed. I can't see the use of a peep sight, unless you want to use the gun at some distance. For home defense ranges, the bead is as fast as you can get. The shotgun is a close range tool, but if you want to use it at a greater distance, then I expect that some sort of rear sight would be useful.
I happen to like peep sights, or I used to when my vision was better. They work better and faster than open sights, at least within most useful distances.
I recommend 12 guage (or 20), but definitely use something like Federal OO tactical buck in a 12. If you are in a warm climate, then shot might be OK, but I wouldn't trust ammo designed to kill birds in a place where people may wear heavy clothing. As distance increases, the pattern opens up to compensate for sighting innaccuracy. You do have to put the bead on it, but the combo of a 12 guage with 00 tactical Buck is great out to 50 feet! Pattern the stuff, and you will be pleased.
Check out your ammo to be sure that it doesn't hang up when you shoot. Some ammo is not reliable in my gun, and you can't tell by looking at the shells. You have to fire them to know.

I didn't like the Mossberg 500 I had, even with all the gee-gaws I bought for it. In fact, I actively disliked it.

single bar, double bar...never had a problem, but your choice, of course.

The two guys with whom I hunt most use 870s.

Generally speaking, I've never heard of/read of an instance where a home invader stuck around for more than one magazine's worth of discussion with a shotgun. But I could be wrong.

Give some consideration to the stock length. I think shorter is better: comes up easier, brings your cheeks into allignement faster. Pistol grips are for movies or automobiles--maybe.

And, of course, I like older used guns....

Be well and safe.

For the price Big 5 sporting goods seems to have the Mossberg 500 with two barrels a 20" and a 28" sporting barrel for around $220 on sale on a regular basis. It's a good basic pump for the money. They also occasionally run adds for a 20" extended mag 870 for around $280.

Nothing to add regarding shotgun advice, but I'm really glad that it was your wife that confiscated the shotgun. I was fearing something more 'official'.

I second the Ithaca. You can get a lightweight version and it works for lefties quite as well as for righties. I really love mine although I haven't experience with others so my opinion as usual doesn't count for much :)

Mossbergs are good enough, and the price is right. They're not tanks but they'll handle whatever one's shoulder can. If you're in the mood to trick it out, a light in the forearm and a shotshell carrier on the stock are both reasonable choices. A ghost ring rear sight is money well spent if you're going to be shooting a lot of slugs.
