My small survival kit

333rm, the kit looks great! good job setting it up. Big enough to actually have some useful gear, small enough that you don't mind carrying it all the time. Nice! One thing thou. You carry a folder on your person in addition to the kit? Or a fixed blade?

nice.

Just out of curiousity when / how do you carry? Do you keep it in the car? Take it with you only when hiking, hunting, camping. Again I'm just curious to know when people feel they need a survival kit with them.

Bill

For me it is "within arms reach at all time" meaning my kit is never out of reach.

Thanks Coffee! I always carry my Izula with me as my EDC. Since getting my new RC-3 MIL I've been trying that out as an EDC and it might just replace the Izula.

I added some new items to this kit so thought I'd throw it back out here. I listed the items at the beginning of the thread. It might also give some people who never saw it a chance to check this small kit out.

I'm going to put together this kit starting this afternoon, thanks for the help!

That's great to hear! It fits right into your pocket without a poblem and the Maxpedition notebook cover is pretty cheap, so you can't go wrong.

Not sure you if you are keeping track but I write the expiration date of any bagged medication on the baggies.

Yeah I change out all the bagged medications in my survival kits and my bug out bag at the same time once a year. Even though they don't expire in a year I just do this to make sure I stay on top of it and don't forget.

Cool acronym to remember, man, I wish I had thought of it years ago!

W.A.R. For Within Arm's Reach. Martial Artist Cliff Stewart coined that one a long, long time ago for his own system. He used to be an associate of the late, great Ernie Franco, among many other greats.

Sifu Paul Vunak had a great one as well, R.A.T. For Rapid Assault Tactics.

Try to get to know your Pharmacist and tell him you store them in emergency kits just like the F.E.M.A. peoples tells us to now. That way you don't come off like a nutter.

When they get an Rx Medication in, unless it is a fast mover, it could stay in the Pharmacy for months and they will still put that expiration date one year to the day, later, on the label.

You have to check with each, specific medication, especially with things like some antibiotics. Another thing, an EPI-PEN, for example, has its own manufacturer's expiration date on it. Make sure you get one that is good for two years because that's how long a fresh one should last. If they are giving you one that is only good for a year, they're ripping you off. Not the label the Pharmacy places on it, the label the manufacturer places on it, then you must store it as directed on that same label. The label will be on the EPI-PEN itself, not the box or the plastic storage/safety container.

Medications are chemical compounds and some are more stable than others, you have to do a bit of research. Chemical compounds can change over time and that is where you can run into trouble. But Doctors that lecture you on the dangers of some things are completely full of crap. :D

That's good to know about the EPI-PEN's Don, I would of never picked up on the 2 expiration dates between the pharmacy and the manufacturer. Thanks for the info!

I forgot to add, sometimes the Pharmacy is at the mercy of their distributor, too. So, it's not always the Pharmacist that is trying to sell you a not-quite-as-fresh-as-it-could-be EPI-PEN.

looks great. wanna store some needles and thread with it?

Go by your local Hotel and ask for their "Complimentary Sew/repair kit". Usually you'll get a couple sewing needles, thread, couple buttons, tiny safety pins and a tiny pair of scissors - all in a compact plastic bag/box.
Usually FREE! :D

Thanks for reminding me Harold! I had a small packaged sewing kit I had got for free from somewhere that I had thrown inside the tin right after I took the pics. I sealed the tin with duct tape and haven't opened it in a few months.

333rm: nice kit. Check out Alosak bags. They make some wallet sized ones. Much more durable than ziplocks, and very waterproof. It would make a great upgrade for your first aid sub-kit.

On the topic of Epi-Pens, there used to be an Epi-Kit. MUCH more compact than a Pen, and the ability to deliver a second dose. I believe they are no longer manufactured, but maybe if enough people ask their pharmacist...

Thanks for all the comments guys! I use the Aloksaks A LOT in some other survival kits and in my bug out bag. This was a small pocket kit I put together that would easily fit into any pocket of mine. I have a much more in depth and larger survial kit I posted up right before this one. I used the Tactical Tailor E & E Pouch for that one. If you go back around page 121 (My EDC Survival Kit) or so you should find it. I'm kinda like TTD, I have a bunch of survival kits all over and I'm always putting new ones together and looking for better ways to do it.

Nice kit! Careful with those REI stormproof matches I've had some go off from the match heads rubbing eachother.
