Ummmmmm........I don't see a firearm in those pictures.......

LOL! I though that after I posted it up. Well here is the story, my mom had been wanting a gun for herself and one day bought a Taurus PT-25 on a whim. Whenever I got to show her how to use it she no longer liked it and moved on... She got it because A: It was small and light, B: it was not expensive so no real loss, C: she got a good deal, and D: she has arthritis in her hands so she needed a light caliber E: it fit her hand well... and hey its better than throwing rocks... SSSOO its been sitting. I was talking to my brother in law this weekend about how I have been wanting a little .22 derringer just for giggles, she heard, and well she told me later to take the PT25 home. I know Taurus isnt really a popular brand nor does it scream quality, but it "kinda" fits the bill for what I was looking for even if its in .25 instead of .22. A small caliber, palm sized firearm. Not to mention the whole "free gun and ammo" thing. Took it out, put some rounds through and was actually pretty surprised with how it functioned. Not the most accurate thing, but its not supposed to be. For in close shooting it pointed and placed fairly naturally without depending on the sights too much... Probably going to get my mom a smaller cal revolver with a light trigger later, but they have other firearms now, just something easy for her to shoot. I am thinking revolver because of easy of use, but on the other hand she absolutely loves my 22/45, weight was a little much though... So I dunno, will have to do some more looking.

I don't think there's any such thing as a revolver (particularly a small one) with a light trigger. The trigger has to do a lot of mechanical work, and hammer-cocking a revolver is bad juju for self-defense because the adrenaline dump will render small motor control useless and a startle user can set the trigger off accidentally.

I actually LIKE a DA-only revolver for self-defense for this reason. You have to work to shoot it, it's a simple as a semi-auto to operate with no safeties. As long as the trigger pull is smooth and reasonable, it works very very well. Some practice is required for accuracy with a long pull, as with all first-shot DA handguns. But for small or weak hands it can be iffy. OTOH, there's no slide-racking to contend with.

A professionally tuned S&W can have a reasonably light trigger pull, but that won't be inexpensive.

Man I've been having a hard time keeping up here lately. Getting into ice fishing again has lead me to of course more fishing, but also being more active overall. I've been keeping busy with all kinds of things and am usually itching to get out of the house as much as possible. Yesterday morning when I got off work I slept 3 hours and then couldn't sleep anymore, so I looked outside and saw how beautiful it was and decided to heck with sleeping, grabbed my gear and was gone. I spent 6 hours fishing and had a blast even though I only caught a few. I must have drilled a dozen holes trying to get on top of some fish. When I finally found a school of perch I couldn't get the darn things to bite no matter what I tried. It was still fun watching them on my sonar following my bait even though the buggers wouldn't eat it!!

Another plus side is that I'm down 10lbs without even trying.

Thats cool!! I wouldn't turn down a free gun either....even if its a Taurus. LOL :p I think I'm going to take something with me to work to shoot tonight while the semi warms up. I haven't shot more than half a box of ammo in the last couple of months and am feeling a bit rusty. It is actually light out when I head to work in the evenings now, so I'll be getting more and more shooting in again.

Thats what I was initially thinking, or something like the LCR in .22 or .22mag... .22 -.32 is going to be all she could probably handle in a pistol. Maybe .380 but that can be pretty snappy in a smaller gun. Plus the LCR.22/mag would be light, easy, etc etc. Trigger is an issue though. I am just going to have to take her to a big gun store and let her try some things out.

light guns are much harder to shoot. Does it need to be small/light for carry? My opinion is that you should generally pick the heaviest gun you can for the purpose and then pick caliber from there. What feels 'nice and light' in the gun store kicks like a mule at the range.

.22mag isn't great from a short barrel. in a 4" revolver barrel SOME loads will be better than a .22LR, but the report without muffs (SD scenario) is brutal. I'd go for a heavier subsonic instead.

Actually, you can beat it with the low, low price of free.

I was gonna say... I don't pay doodly for the pic hosting I use. I don't pay anything for the stuff that blocks the ads either... *shrug*

finally going to get to take my Mr T special out for some fun time.. ;)

Beat that sucker like it was free! Satisfaction guaranteed, or your money back... :p :D

There are a couple different variables going towards the reasoning of wanting a lighter firearm, carrying being one, but a lot of it comes down to simple comfort. Its just what she is comfortable with mentally and physically. It isnt an ideal situation, but its just one of those cases.

Heading up to see the Pixies at the Paramount theater in Seattle.
Should be a great show.
We're having dinner at the Tap House. They have about 160 beers on tap!
This is shaping up to be an awesome evening out with the wifey. I'm excited!

Somebody's been practicing.

Just remember to pace yourself bubba, wives don't appreciate a one pump chump!

Truth be told, that does sound like a nice evening out.
I just got home from Springfield yesterday and just got called to go back for an 8am surgery tomorrow, which means when I finish my meeting tonight I am driving up to Springfield. Cause lord knows getting my ass up at 0515 to drive to Springfield AIN'T gonna happen.

It's going to be a hard time adjusting to having to go to work after being home for the last 3 months....trying to find time to do the PT I'm supposed to do, plus thinking about getting my ass out the door at 6:30 am is just making me (more) depressed. Plus, we got like 6" of snow today, and even though the doc and the PT's say "no shovelling" I'll be out there tomorrow am making sure I can get my car outta the (luckily quite short) driveway. I was hoping to fire up the new etcher today, but school cancellations and appointments put the kibosh on that. Can't believe I'm feeling this way, but there doesn't seem to be any point in starting any projects right now...if I shower and go to bed by 10, I might even get 7 hours of sleep. Blah.
Sure is pretty outside, tho. Like a winter wonderland; new snow on top of a pretty good amount already, with big floofy piles of it on the few conifers in the neighbor's yard and all curvy and sparkly everywhere else. If I wasn't recovering from back surgery (and had worked in the last 3 months) I'd call in "well" tomorrow and go skiing in the woods or down by the ocean. Or both, we have this wonderful little state park (Odiorne Point State Park)that is a wooded area bordering the ocean/rivermouth that used to be a WW II installation, and is now home to the Seacoast Science Center.

None of that for me tho.

Rock it tomorrow, Mike, but don't push that back!
BTW, that little thing we talked about is in transit.

Thank you! Monday was the first day back for me, and I'm finding the re-entry more than a little challenging. I gotta readjust the thrusters so I don't flub the trajectory, and make sure I have time leftover for important things like.....knife mods! The hardest part is I had a metric crapload of free time the last 3 months, but couldn't really do anything because of my back and the subsequent surgery and recovery. And now that I'm feeling better, I gotta go back to the grind. Argh!
