My son wants a survival knife...Help, please.

Aitor Jungle survival knife.
They are old & super strong . I think they were the first hallow handle knife.
They are made of very good Spanish steel.
Even the sheath can be used as a sling shot.
BUT you will have to get one off the BAY.
Old used ones are priced well , Mint ones are very expensive.

OR
Swedish Mauser Bayonet. and modifiy it. Cheep and easy to do.
Made of great steel.
Grind off the rifle fitting.
Make a alloy or brass end cap and thread it.
Change end of blade shape.
Use a chain saw file to serate back of blade.

I would agree w/ Longtrang on a Esse3 or Ontario RAT3, if recommending for any other 15yo eagle scout. Your son having been specific, requires compromise. My Randall Made 18, hollow handle sawback, would please your son to no end, However it cost me over $300 then, rather more now. .
And, to agree with many, one of the Chris Reeve knock offs gives up the saw but remain tough knives. I have one, also

The Aitor Jungle ("Jungla") knife. That was the first one that came to my mind. It is the hollow handle survival knife that all teenage boys craved when I was younger! And they're a decent knife, really. I just went to the big on-line auction site and searched for them. I was shocked at the prices! I remember them being really inexpensive... oh well.

I guess the Schrade or the Cold Steel Bushman would be the next best thing. Others will tell you there are better choices, but when you're a teenager, what you want it what you WANT. Substitutes (even if they're more practical) won't do.

You must a be a great mom! The fact that your son is an Eagle Scout says a lot... congratulations.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

that schrade is your best bet.

the bear grylls knife is pretty dumb, imo. and I like bear grylls :P

Hollow handle knives are the worst. Discourage that. Something like a victorinox one-hand trekker or a Vic farmer would be much better. And a small plastic plastic match vial for the other things.

Because it is a waste of $10 to get him something that will break. If he is really wanting to start into knives, something of quality can easily be had for under 50.

If he is dead set on the hollow handle, the two options I would recommend have been stated. The Schrade and the Cold Steel Bushman.

I would consider the lesson being learned worth $10, wouldnt you?

Not really. That is a waste of money if you know it is going destroyed. I would purposefully buy something I know is going to break unless I absolutely had to, or I wanted to test it to destruction. But, that is just me.

The becker bk2 is a great knife for the money.
It is U.S. made.
Try amazon.com for a good deal.
These are true working knives.

:thumbdn: on the hollow handle.
 on letting your son read the thread
 on the cool hollow compass/match case thingie shown a few posts above.
 to Moras, the Buck Nighthawk (awesome knife and a great value in my opinion) or the Ontario Pilot's Survival Knife...which I might add has been used by actual real U.S. military tough guys to survive actual real bad stuff.

In any event, I'd like to know what you end up buying for your son.

I just checked her profile...her last activity was about an hour after she made the first post...she hasn't read anything past post #8 unless she's reading it without logging in.

The original poster (thebeck) posted two days ago. She's participated in three threads so far—all in Wilderness & Survival. (This thread originated in W&S.) It looks like she may stick around and be a regular around here. I sure hope so. She's already proven herself to be a good Mom. She's also proven herself to be wise by coming here for help and advise instead of just making an uninformed decision.

If you're still with us, thebeck— a big welcome, and please stick around. :)

For $50 and for a hollow handled "survival knife" I would point to this:

Schrade Extreme Survival Knife - Clip point - Small

Strong - not as big as the others mentioned - the clip point is what most peoples idea of a knife should look like - hollow handle - and has the cool factor.

Good luck.

+1. Like a few of the others have said (that read who this is for), get him as close to what he asked for, and let him become educated about better knives later on. I had the worst Rambo-esque when I was in scouts, and so did all of the rest of the guys. We actually used them about 10% of the time, our SAKs the other 90%. But they were cool! THAT was what mattered, and I still wish I had that knife just for the memories.

BTW, the Schrade is 1000x better than what I had, and mine lasted through years of abuse, so it should serve your son well.

I think the one he would like most would be an ESEE 3 or 4. Small, reliable, non-combat looking and practical. Unfortunately I can't find either new for less than $80. Again, check the for sale forums here. Every so often a few RAT/ESEE knives pop up.

Red Raven 6 makes a knock off of the Baley Knife........... :D

Not trying to be a smart alec, but I looked up the "Red Raven 6" on the internet; it's actually "Red Scorpion 6" and the knife is the ASK Gen2.
Here's the link: http://www.redscorpionsix.com/catalog/edged-weapons-and-tools/ask-generation-2-adventure-survival-knife

As for the ESEE Knives, I own the ESEE-3, the ESEE-5 and I would love to have the ESEE-4. I know the ESEE-3 & 4 are out of the price range, but they are WELL worth the extra $$$. Tough as nails and stay sharp. I'd trust my life with one.

GREAT! I wasnt going to buy any more knives until next year and now i'm going to order one of those schrades and see how it fairs...do the tools in the handle come out? I probably wont use them, be more suited with fire making equipment stuffed in there.

Combination of Victorinox Farmer and a Mora - one of the recent Bushcraft series.

Have You tried one of MTech's survival knife. I got this one a few months ago and I love it. Although I'm only 13 and that's my only survival knife.:
