I have consistently been carrying my SuperBlue Delica over the course of the last few months. It has been used to cut packages, zip ties, and other household type chores. I recently removed some built-in shelves from a hallway in my home and used the Delica to score all the calked edges to make for a cleaner removal and it worked great. The edge was slightly dulled by the time I was done, but after some work on the strops it came right back.
Just re-caulked my bathroom sink last night and used my HAP40 Delica to cut the old caulk off the wall and scrape iteek
off the sink area. Normally I wouldn't use my knife for scraping against a hard surface, but I figured hey, this is a high speed steel, let's see what it can handle. I also recently acquired a second HAP40 Delica, so I feel freed up to put my original through the paces.
The super thin grind on this knife really helped me get to the caulk between the sink and drywall. By the time I was done I could easily see light reflecting off the apex, but it was pretty uniform without any obvious chipping or rolling. I was planning to reprofile the edge anyway. I mostly used the first inch or so of the blade near the tip, and the tip held up just fine.
Have you found any recent contenders for the Delica's spot??
The Delica is such a great all-around knife that is is truly hard to beat. For me, the value is a big issue--even on the relatively expensive versions such as the SuperBlue or the HAP40 they are still 1/3 the cost of my former EDC, the Sebenza. As such, I am much less apprehensive about using it for scraping and other tasks that might give me pause on a much more expensive blade.
I recently had a door sticking at the top of the frame and do not own a door planer so I decided to use the SB Delica to just remove a slight amount of material from the top of the door. The sharp edge and thin grind proved a good asset when removing a minimum of door material. The only complaint I had about the Delica was using it in that function it revealed a little more flex in the frame than I would prefer, especially when comparing it to a Ti framelock; however, it is a minute issue and almost not even worthy of mention.
To the question of any new contenders--not yet! However, I have been eyeing three new Spyderco's that I would like to put up against the Delica in a head-to-head EDC Battle Royale of sorts: Sage 5, Rhino, Para 3. That being said, funds are short and I don't own any of these three models yet. But, soon enough I will and we will give them a go!
You're talking about flex in the scales? I noticed some flex in the blade as I was cutting/scraping caulk, but haven't worked mine hard enough to notice flex in the handle yet.
Looking forward to the next iteration of the EDC showdown!
Really, if you're putting enough force into a task to flex the handle, you're probably reaching the point to where stresses in the thin blade may be a little excessive for its size and ideal uses.
That said, I'm an idiot and chipped the tip off of my Kahr Delica. D'oh!
Thanks for the great thread! Not often that I read one from start to end (especially when it's 15 pages long!). Made me grab my gray FRN delica for some carry this week!
👌🏽👏👍
I just read through it in its entirety myself , and I have no idea why , but this thread really rates highly in my Blade forums world .

Agreed!!! Very good read!
I have been sceptical about the Delica for a very long time... I was more into more robust 3.25" blade folders, the back lock is really not a love story for me and the VG10 is nothing that bring dreams in my sleeps....
This was until I finally get a good deal on a nice looking Zome Declica...

And this nice it just right...
nothing is wrong into it if you consider why it has been designed for
It is one of the best EDC I own.
I think it is on pare with my mini-griptilian and my small sebenza 21... which is quite a performance when you consider the respective prices of these knives
IMHO best value for an EDC
I carry it without clip, tossed into my pocket with a piece of paracord to help graving it into the pocket
Just bought a ZDP Delica to use as a moving knife...because that's what people like us do!
I will have a large amount of heavy cardboard boxes to cut up soon, I didn't think my 154CM Emerson with its thick blade was suited to that, I feel the XHP Manix 2 I have may give up the ghost before I can unpack my sharpener (a dull knife...the horror!) so I bought a ZDP Delica for a explicit purpose of box cutting...Almost went Endura but then I deiced the risk was less with the Delica of cutting anything inside said boxes!
I remember Thomas from KAI saying that ZDP was the very best straight slicing blade steel on the market today, I think that fits my needs with this exactly.
Somebody must have a Delica observation , story , moderfication or picture that they can contribute to this great thread .
For example ,
If Super Hero's Carried a Spyderco , I'm sure it would be a Delica in Hap40
