My Spyderco Salt H1 RUSTED!

I took my Salt to Panama City for July 4. Went to the beach and tested it out. The knife RUSTED. Before I got back to my hotel. Not the entire blade, mind you, just the top of the "1" in H1. Is this normal? It was exposed to salt water about 3 hours, before being rinsed and dried.

Chances are, what rusted was steel deposited by the engraving process, rather than the H-1 itself. If it won't simply wipe off, send it to Spyderco marked attention Sal. I know he'll want to see it, and he will likely replace it. H-1 is not supposed to be able to rust.

Please share the resolution of your problem. I'm about to purchase a Salt series knife, and would like to hear the outcome. Thanks!

I like to see a pic of a rusted Salt:rolleyes:

You got any pics of bigfoot?:D

I have had my Salt for 3 years now. Carried at the beach, lake, river, tub. Never, and I mean never, did I even see rust on it. H1 will not rust. Repeat. WIL NOT RUST. So unless you have pics....I don't believe you. ;)

any pics i hade a h1 alantic salt lost it for a week outside and the eniter week it raind but no rust

It is not possible for H1 steel to rust in typical real world usage...

Pics please, also anyone who owns a salt care to participate? Perhaps dip their Pasific salt in a bowl of salt water for days :)?

A big myth in the knife world is that out there somewhere is a knife that seriously cuts but cannot rust. Knives claiming these super powers are usually made with steels that are unable to hold a cutting edge for any measurable amount of time. Finally a steel foundry in Japan called Myodo Foundry makes this myth a reality with the introduction of a new steel called H1. H1 steel is a PH steel, meaning it is a precipitation-hardened steel. "Huh" you ask? Utilizing .1% nitrogen instead of carbon to harden the steel, it reaches a Rockwell hardness of 57-58rc. Spyderco uses H1 on its new C91 Pacific Salt model.

I found little traces of rust in the "Spyderco" engraving on my Salt-1; of course it was only traces of steel from Sal's tooling. If the blade were capable of rusting, I would've managed it by now. My Salt is run hard and put away wet on a daily basis - it has survived saltwater, strong acids and bases, and generic abuse from a clumsy user. It just won't rust.

So seriously, where are the pics?

Hi Scotchleaf,

It is not the H1 that has rusted. It is the material that was used to blacken the lazer etching of the logo for H1. Have no concern. It will go away. The H1 logo will probably no longer be black.

We're trying to figure out a way to avoid it, but to date, no solutions. The etching solution is the problem, not the H1.

Sorry if we caused you any concern.

I'll try again to take a pic, but the area is about the size of a match head tip and is hard to resolve. I'll try scanning next.

Thanks for the reply Sal. The issue isn't functional, only asthetic.

Could the logo be put onto the handle instead of the blade? That might prevent the issue from happening. Also, the indentations on the etching may trap corrosive materials.

But aren't you glad you had the Salt.
Just imagine if you had been carrying a carbon blade Opinel!
You sure wouldn't need the "macro" feature of a camera to show the rust on the Opinel.
:D
