My Spyderco Salt H1 RUSTED!

Sal is correct. I posed a similar question when I did a small stress test on my Salt I in a cup of salted water for 1 week.

Similar H1 logo 'tarnishes'. I was assured it was deposits from the etching/ engraving process. True enough it went away after I washed it.

Here are my rudimentary photos from a while back.

My Salt I is now my most abused folder. I love how I can throw anything at it and it just keeps giving :)

Hi Scotchleaf,

It is not the H1 that has rusted. It is the material that was used to blacken the lazer etching of the logo for H1. Have no concern. It will go away. The H1 logo will probably no longer be black.

We're trying to figure out a way to avoid it, but to date, no solutions. The etching solution is the problem, not the H1.

Sorry if we caused you any concern.

What about stamping the logo instead of etching?

SpyderTi. Yup. You can do it, Sal! ;)

Hi Lycosa,

I guess we could probably do it. Not sure if there is an advantage over H1.

Hi Huugh

we're looking into other ways of marking.

But that is why I bought the Salt in the first place. I knew not to take one of my Opinels into the water.

just returned from a 10 days seaside trip, where my pacific salt practicaly lived inside my swimming shorts
NO rust issues
on the other hand, I have polished the blade with some sandpaper to remove last year's scratches and most certainly I have removed material from the H1 logo in the process, so probably I don't have any rust-prone leftovers

I like the the logo on the blade myself. I have 2 salts and only one says salt on the blade. I just ordered a salt 1 cause I like my pacific salt so much, I use it as my lunch knife. It's like a folding santuka. It has gotten goopy from all kinds of food but nary a stain. My dodo got a stain from packing tape, not a complaint, just an observation of the powerful resistance of the salt blades.

here are some pics of my tasman that i took when i was on furlough and they were washing my bunker gear:( so i had to take everything off of it. this knife has been clipped onto my jacket for about a year now (i used to have a clip-it but it rusted after just one fire) it has been beat to sh#t and has been exposed to alot of water/chemicals/soot but no rust...i don't clean it, i just sharpen it once in awhile...it also cut a guy out that was pinned in his car after an accident. if anybody was sitting on the fence with the salts...just go get one, you won't be disappointed.

edit...that isnt rust on the tooth that is missing...when i was at the pin in, the car was upside and i had to cut the wires to the power seat in order to remove it...it arced (sp?) and took the tooth off...a few strokes on the sharpmaker and it is good as new.

Now, these are the kind of pictures I like to see. I like to see how these knives stand up to real use, not just sitting in someone's pocket, drawer or display case.

Awesome pics, Tony. Thanks for sharing them.

The question has been answered but I’ll chime in anyway. I had a similar problem, but on the whole blade of my Salt I Black: tiny specs of rust.

I cleaned the blade with a very light abrasive to get rid of what was probably metal debris that was not H1. After cleaning it I tested the knife (salt water, lemon juice and some other stuff :-) for a few days. The H1 held up beautifully.

It really doesn’t rust.

Nice pic Tony :)

My Salt I is a bit scuffed up, but yours is in active duty. I'm not sure whose knife you have there mate....the burnt DIY name etching on it is rather faint. Can you read what it says on it :P ;)

Glad it managed to get someone out in a sticky situation. I like how you left the yellow to naturally patina with dirt and grime....very much in the spirit of the working H1. Good stuff.

Lycosa: would love some more Ti in the Spydie range. But I dunno about Ti blades.... too expensive and edge retention is an issue as is material hardness generally. It'd kick butt in the lightweight stakes for sure. H1 for now is my awesome steel of the year. It gets better the more you use it... work hardened steel. It seems the blade stays sharper the more I use and sharpen it.

I have a $400 mission folder in Beta Ti. It doesn't hold an edge as well as the H1. It doesn't home sharpen as well ( I would rather use a belt sander or grinder to put an edge on Ti) and take as good an edge. It does have the "cool" factor going for it though.

No, it won't even get through a metal detector if that's what you're thinking. I often wish I would have bought the version with the A2 tool steel blade as it would be much more practical for me. It wasn't yet an option when I bought the mission folder.

In some situations it is more usefull to EOD types as I understand it, though my knowledge of that is very limited. It did come with an edge that would shave arm hair, believe it or not.

In most situations H1 is the better choice for knife blades than Ti, IMHO. Joe

FWIW, I've had this one in some horrible places and there's no rust at all. With the exception of the one a rogue TSA agent stole from my luggage, all of mine are going strong after some considerable beatings.

Thanks, Joe. My Mission Titanium knives are for survival and emergency use. Under those circumstances, I love the light-weight and No-Rust worries of the Beta Titanium. Yes, both of my Missions shave hair. My users, are steel blade, like Spyderco. I understand. Thanks! ;)
