My Sweet New Wood Scales and ~UPDATED~ Pics of Desert Queen Completed ~ 6/13/11

Nope, just sprayed it, which i believe is why I'm having my problem... the paint wont set up all the way. Its polyeurathane paint, after 2 days the paint still dents with a fingernail... I'm going to sand it and try a different paint, but if that doesn't work, then I'm screwed... its all the tan paint i found. Hope it works. Any suggestions?

Sucks that it doesn't stay on. I have no clue what would help I haven't tried anything like that before.

I only asked because I like the idea of the sandy colour wearing thin and exposing the black underneath. Kind of like do it yourself camo eventually lol.

thanks! and if I cant fix it here, I'll have to wait till I get home. No way to get duracoat or a spray gun over here.

Brother, I didn't even look to see where you were located when I replied. Duracoat also sells a disposable sprayer. It's $11.00. It would be more than enough to spray one knife. LINK

Between the small sprayer and a small bottle of Coyote Brown, or Desert Beige, the package wouldn't be very large. I'll help you get the package over there if you need me to.

Those both look Great! You said your gonna sand it and redo it, I'd make sure to scuff the black covering a little which will prob happen when ya take the tan off. then once repainted I'd prob try baking it as someone else suggested. Just be careful not to get it to hot as I'm sure your aware of. But I'm sure it'll turn out great! good luck and stay safe!!!

As far as I've heard and experienced (1 time), that Amboyna Burl kinda chunks out if used hard. It's one of my favorite woods. Smells good when tooling too. I'd probably keep it for a show piece.

Yeah... you're prob right, since they cost more than most of the beckers. I might just have to get another knife and turn it into a safe queen.

Also, as far as baking, I let it sit outside in 110 degrees for about 6 hours. Only source of heat.

So the new paint is working!! Only 1.5 hrs after spraying, it is hard enough that it doesnt dent with a fingernail! I'm super pumped, its a little darker than the other color, I will post pics when I get back to my room. Now all I need is my natural micarta scales, a coyote brown kydex sheath and a sweet desert tan paracord lanyard. i'll be working on lanyard designs tonight!

I might have missed it but what paint did you go with? The duracoat one mentioned above?

Some dress pants I've been working on. Made with nothing but Beckers and one gerber mulitool for boring.

Very nicely done! I really like that look on it. And you know we're going to need more pix than that, right? ;) I'm looking forward to 'em. :)

That is frigging impressive. More Amboyna right?

Yes, sir! Stabilized amboyna that i got from fleabay. I'm waiting on some tung oil I ordered to finish it. They were just damp right there. They arent too purty, but they are just some working handles and my first attempt at wood scales, plus, I only used a BK11 and a small boring knife.

Awesome blades! JM it was my pleasure meeting you and I know my "babies" are in good hands! Thanks again to you and your bros over there for your service!

I made these scales with a BK11 and a small gerber multitool for boring out the holes. Finished with 150 grit sand paper and Hope's Tung Oil hand rubbed in.
