Hope you like them. I spend alot of time not only the look and feel, but also the handling characteristics, and I really enjoy making them. Feel free to ask questions.

Alrighty then. They certainly do look cool. Could you share some of your thoughts on the handling and impact characteristics? Tapers? Where you put the mass? Dynamic balance point?

John, dont get me wrong, You do great work but the blood strewn on the stool picture changed my mood. I have visions now of what these things are made for and it scares the hell out of me.

Do you get the same feelings when holding one of your cut and shoot pieces? ;) Don't take me wrong either. :o

Hey Possum,

Sure no problem. They are all under 2 pounds. The Gladius is around 1lb 10 oz, balance point is about 3 " from the guard, pivot point 6" from the tip.
The Abaddon is 1lb 15 oz., balance point is right at the finger choil, pivot point 5" from the tip. Single hand Abaddon is 1lb 9 oz., balance point is 2" from the guard, pivot point is 5" from the tip.

Not sure what a "Dynamic balance point" is. For the length of these there is very little taper, the mass is distributed throughout. That is why they are ground like a traditional sword ie: double hollow ground and fullered. These are designed to delver the energy to the cut. I know what I do from working at Albion with Peter Johnsson.

Cheers,

John

They are designed for what you think, but that is leather dye on the stool. :D

Sweet, man. Thanks for the reply. When I said "dynamic balance point", I'm just referring to the pivot point out on the blade that corresponds to the one at or just behind the guard. Am I correct in assuming this is the reference point (i.e., the pivot at the guard) you're using when listing the pivot points above? On my blades that need to thrust as well as cut I generally like the guard's pivot point a little closer to the tip, but could see that wouldn't be much of an issue on a blade mainly used for powerful cutting.

The Abaddon is 1lb 15 oz., balance point is right at the finger choil, pivot point 5" from the tip.

I was wondering how you got the balance point that close and still had the pivot point behind the tip with that kind of construction, until I realized you were talking about the one with the longer grip.

I like discussing this stuff, so please feel free to wax poetic on your philosophies on "dynamic balance".

Ok i understand, just went to a different school if you will. I am holding the sword at the guard to referrence the pivot point.

OK, but it sure looks like blood. :o
I make some tactical knives and can justify them somehow. Your swords are a reality check for an old guy like me. They dont conceal and would attract tons of attention in a mall. I guess an assault rifle would do the same thing. I just hope whoever buys them is on our side.

I've had a gander through your site and the only one you mention is the 27" OAL with a 17" blade (presumably the 2 handed version). What're the dimensions for the 1 hander?

John your swords are awesome! I love that Gladius on your site with the painted blade and textured handle. The textured leather over kydex is also amazing.....

The single hand is a prototype and I have only made 2 of them just in the past month, so that is why it hasn't made it on my site yet.

Here are the specs for that one
1075
57-58 rockwell
23 1/2" overall
17" blade w/ lizard skin camo
Black canvas micarta grooved grip
1lb. 8oz.

Hey John,

Did you hand one of your pieces to Kim Breed at Blade? I was outside shootin' the breeze with him when a gentleman came over with a sword very much like the one in the zombie pic. I remember Kim was impressed (as was I). Really like your designs.

Yes that was me. Kim took it with him to write the article for Blade magazine. Kim is a great guy and whole alot of fun to be around and talk to.

Those are a thing of beauty.

This may be the wrong forum for these kinds of questions, but i love the paint job. How do you apply that paint? Is it a powder coat? If so, does the oven temp needed for powder coating change the temper?
