My Trio.

Rocky,

That link I gave to SP above. There is a discussion board on that thread. Jon answers a lot of them. There is GOOD advice there. Sign up for the newsletter too.

Good luck, and feel free to PM me with any questions. I am no professional but I might get lucky.

Hi all,
Talfuchre nice set up you have there. I think you have the bases covered.
Here is my Trio. Left to right my BPA (Breeden Pocket Axe) My TH Bushcrafter 5" long by 5/32" thick blade and then my smaller knife, that I call the Handy Little Knife, it hs a 4" long by 3/32" thick blade.

The 2 knives and the E-Z lap model M sharpener and the match safe I carry on the sheath that I made.
I have tried all kinds of hatchets but have not found one that I like the best until I made this one even with gloves on it feels real secure in my hand and cuts like there is no tomorrow. I can batton even on the handle to split wood with if I need to.
The bigger knife I like the upswept blade shape the best and I really like the
5" blade length. I know E Krepts and Horace Kepart both thought the 4.5" blade length was best ( like they say in there books) but I like that 1/2" longer lendgth for the all round blade length.I like fixed blades so much better than pocket knives. It is fixed, it is simple, and I do not have to open it up. LOL I do carry the SAK classic just for the little sissors though.
Since I cut trees for part of my living I really like having the Orange color for incase I set or drop one of them it sure is a lot easyer to see them if droped along the trail.

Hi all,

Talfuchre Thanks. Yea being able to make my own set up was cool and the way I wanted too. the handles fit my hand the way I want. That makes a big difference, well to me any ways LOL. I have had this little hand axe about a month now I made two others and I guess the third times is the charm as they say. here they are in this pic

From left one is the first one I made and I really like it it fast in the hand and slices like a kitchen knife. but I thought well maybe just a tad bigger head.
so I made the second one Thunder moon from here on the forums has that one now) and put the Tan linen micarta handle on it and I like the bigger head. I used that one for about a week and a half before I thought of putting a little curve in the handle like the third one has. When I made the last one I put the handles on it got out and used it I was like WOW.
This is the one. I have been chopping through ice, splitting up kindling, clearig paths through ceder trees here on the farm, making trap components.
I have not buttered any french bread yet but I did carve up some
turkey ham :D for a sandwich though. LOL It did just fine at that.
Can you tell so far I am really pleased with it LOL I convexed the heads on all of them and so they really cut like a dickens. I was reading today that Horace kephart said that he used his tiny hatchet more than he used his knife. When I think back over that last 30 days or so I have used this hatchet more than my TH Bushcrafter when out and about in the woods.

Take care,

Bryan
