My views on my White Owl.

Thanks Blaine. I looked at a bunch of stag W.O.'s and the 'perfectionist' in me would always pick out some flaw or another. I guess I got lucky.

How are the Tidioute white owls? Does the detraction of a bail make them seem more like a big penknife?

Two years ago I bought a rust red white owl . I don't carry it a lot but it is a fine pocket knife , good steel and easy to work with . They could easy do any thing that comes along . I am glad we have great eastern knives to pick from , first class American company !

Yes, very much so. While I enjoy my Northfield for what it is, the bail gives it a Scout knife-ishness feel for me which the Tidioutes don't have.

You are so right Jake. Don't see a lot of those Rust Reds, could be a very nice carry, especially with age.

Pertinux, thanks for the Dead Skunk picture, it's an odd acrylic as it varies a lot, some are more bloody than others.... The latest batch on the Manum look very good.

Regards, Will

The #68 is really a great pattern!! (although I carry a #33 mostly as I started with those first :))

Personally, I think this is the most overlooked frame made by GEC.
The clip/pen jack combo doesn't suit this frame too much, and other blade configurations have yet to be seen.
No matter how much I love GEC's #15, I think that the single bladed spear, and the sheepsfoot/pen combo, would look even better on this equal end frame.
And I still think it would make an awesome 2014 BF knife ;)

Is someone forgetting the cattle knife config aka as the Buckaroo?

....One of the reasons I held off was due to the bail. I usually don't like moving parts hanging off a knife, but after about 6 to 7 different leather lanyards, ect. I finally decided on this one....

My Northfield 68 in cocobolo was my first GEC. As soon as I had it in hand I regretted getting the Northfield because of the bail, and wished I'd gone for the Tidioute (I was seduced by the long pull I think). Took me over a year to summon up the nerve to cut it off.

I carry and use it much more than I used to now, but I still find the springs a little limp for my taste. I'm glad I removed the bail though.

Trand,
no, I'm not forgetting about the Buckaroo...it's just that three bladed knives are way under my radar :p

I actually carried my Ebony WO on Sunday as it had been a while and I fell in love with it all over again. Made me wonder why I don't carry it more often I love how slim it is and it just disappears in the watch pocket of my jeans. Great pattern and the reason I can't wait for the 66 slim pattern that GEC has in the works!! I just wish they would do a Clip/Coping version of the WO or even the new 66 slim that is coming out that would be a great combo.

Here are the most recent pictures of mine. I love the Cocobolo with the cloud shield but I knew I would hate the bail so I went with Ebony. Depending on the lighting mine looks very dark but out in the sun it has a lot of brown in it which you can see in these pictures.

:friendly_wink: :p

But to stay on point here, I am a big fan of the WO. I have clip and spear in ebony and spear in autumn gold bone. The size, the pull, the blade choices all make this pattern one that will suit me for years to come, even when I grow tired of stiffer pulls and heavier knives.

:o I missed it.

It's quite impressive the extent of the Owl range that GEC has offered: stainless, carbon, with bail without, bone, stag, wood, acrylics, maybe horn too.

Will, yes they did make some in horn … here's a "Dusk Buffalo Horn" White Owl next to a Conductor.

Truth be told I tend to forget just how nice the White Owl is 'cause I usually carry a Conductor. The White Owl is just about as unobtrusive in the pocket as a Conductor, and yet I have to admit that it feels better in hand. I think I'll carry it for a few days … maybe longer! ;)

Nice to see that horn, but frankly if I had a White Bone Conductor like that I'd never look at another knife...(well, for a while anyway:D:D)

Didn't realize the White Owl and the Conductor were so close in size.

I think the perspective of my pic maybe exaggerates the size of the Conductor somewhat since it's closer to the camera, if that makes sense. By my measurements the White Owl is about 3/16" longer, though.

Thanks for the kind comment, Will … I do like the bone on the Conductor, and it's aged well since that pic was taken, IMO. :)

I hope this pattern will be released with a single blade. Both with and without the bail. I long for a wharncliffe or a sheepsfoot in the #68 frame.

Me too. Or a spear with a long pull, for that matter ;)
Little question: is the Northwoods Indian River jack built on the #68 frame as well? Some day I will find one for sale (especially if Derrick goes for another run... :p ).

At least we agree on a single blade. A single spear with a long pull sounds like a good one.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the Northwoods Indian River jack was built by GEC.

The white owl as a single blade? Don't know about that. The boy's knife is the same size and has covered almost all blade types; clip; sheepfoot; spear.
