My Wife Just Doesn't Understand

I have always been a knife person, collecting various pieces through the years. Some expensive, others cheap working knives, but mainly because knives look cool.

Well, since I've been on BF for about a month now she thinks I'm some kind of backwoods yahoo.

I'm addicted I tell you.

She just may never understand...

She buy ridiculous amounts of purses and shoes like the majority of her gender? Tell her knives are your shoes and purses. I thought mine would be weird about it, but she has been surprisingly supportive of it. Women, always doing their best to not make sense. I think if we ever had them figured out they would change just to keep us guessing.

I haven't 'always' been a 'knife' guy.. I've had/played with knives since I was a kid but never was a freak about it.. guess you'd say I'm more of an adventurous type.. exploring life/surroundings and whatnot, I'm into diesels, raced motorcycles, shooting, boating, music.. etc..

I've been into knives more then ever over the last 3 yrs, the last 2 of them being the biggest, an avid shooter the prices for ammo were killing me (ammo shortage/price spike), especially when you shoot around a 1,000 rds a month of large caliber handguns..

with that said, the ammo prices got me fondling my knives more, which in turn lead to trading knives, buying more knives, trading/selling japanese stones for belt sander.. on and on..

in summary: you're nuts, I'm nuts.. and are wives know it, especially when you go around the house looking/itching for something to cut.. (and whispering to yourself, 'I like to cut things, can I cut you?') :D

women are nuts, they'll tell you they're behind you and support your madness when all in the same breath are testing you to see whats more important to you..

I'm lucky in that respect. My wife's thing is horses. She has zero room to say about ANYTHING about what I spend/do. Never mind the cost of her sport, (what most people pay for rent) but the time and RISK. (1200 lb. animals with metal shoes ...)

But I'm lucky too, that she's pretty cool. She's doesn't care what I spend. Her attitude (and mine) is life is ment to have fun. Money is ment to be spent.

Forget where I heard this but it's good: On their death bed, no one ever wished they worked more.

LOL

You need a radio show with a name like that.

that's funny you say that..

short story< I was going to be a DJ for a rock station in So Cal called 96.7 KCAL FM...

anyrate I never followed through, but there was this show called 'the bob show', me and a friend was at a club and he started lying to these ultra fine morsels, telling them I was 'Bob' from the show.. so I, (get into my dj voice) and do this big shpeal for them kinda how the show did it.. anyhow it was an instant success, I just couldn't believe my buddy from across the bar pulled me into this madness..

anyhow they bought it, hook, line and sinker..

My wife doesn't understand my addictions either. No worries, "in sickness and in health". :p

my wife didn't understand either. Then I bought her a knife, pink ofcourse. She loved it. Then I bought her another one, pink again. Now she carries one in her purse daily and has a pink flashlight to go with it.

It is all how you present it and try to get her interested as well.

I'm pretty fortunate to have a wife that really doesn't care what I spend my money on as long as it doesn't get to out of hand. I try to keep all of my purchases in moderation and let her get what she wants (in moderation of course)

Get her a knife, just make sure the knife matches her purse and shoes. Then, she will start thinking that she needs a different knife for her other purses and shoes. Maybe she will end up with more knives than you!

I feel your pain bratha! I've been into knives for, well for as long as I remember. Her thing is houses and household items, and hotrods. I'm lucky that she likes hotrods. She encourages me to spend money to fix mine and get 'em going, but when I comes to knives and other survival type things she thing I'm crazy!

Knives for collecting is one thing. Knives that get used regularly is another. I could see a wife getting pissed about thousands of dollars of safe queens sitting around, freaking out guests. But my lady supports what I do because she knows that I use knives for work (restaurant professional), and she knows I use them for fun too. I get out in the woods, practice wilderness skills, and basically have an amazing time. She knows how much I enjoy doing that stuff, and she supports me because she knows it makes me happy. I don't collect at a feverish pace though. I only have maybe 10 knives, but I've made all of my knife purchases count and they all get used.

Yeah, this is about my wife's position on the whole thing as well, but every once in a while she'll suprise me with a comment about some random knife I'm looking at. I've fully converted her to guns, so this is my next project...:D

Don't have a wife yet but I guess I'm blessed in that my girlfriend loves the fact that I practice wilderness skills and love knives. According to her it makes her feel safe if something should happen. And she appreciates it because I'm the cook and she gets to benefit from all the fine cuisine I prepare for her. I also bought her a little pink knife with a little pink flash light. I guess if you involve them they will appreciate it because you're involving them. Sometimes I think they don't like our hobbies or interests because it takes our attention away from them. I don't know maybe it will change once I get married?

I agree, I'll add that a collector knife isn't an ESEE or a Becker etc IMO, its a knife that has limited/special run production, I have a Buck fixed blade for Harley Davidson.. only couple hundred made. new maybe 120 now 4-500.. another snap-on #1 of 200., etc etc.. I have maybe 4 collector knives that simply were not designed to be used.. (they'd probably break) the wife knows they only increase in value, better then money in the bank..

I had more 'collectors' and have sold them to buy 'users' as that's what a knife is for, 3 of my 'collectors' were given to me... so even better..

I too use all my knives!!

My wife collects fingernail polish (she has like 500 different colors) so she really never gets on me about what I collect.

I've always loved knives...

i don't get r-ships where one person has to get permission from what seems to be "the decider"

too often i hear phrases like "if she finds out i bought..." or "she won't let me..." and less rarely "he won't let me"... just doesn't seem healthy.

my hobby, my money, my rules, eh? i would never deign to tell someone what to do with their resources. doesn't matter if i don't understand, it's not my call.

course, i seem to be unreasonably reasonable that way :D i know others aren't so lucky...

Depending on price one of us will usually ask the other. Neither of us has ever told the other "no", but there have been times where "wait" was the response. We have a joint checking account, and we have bills, and various other things that require our money. Silly I think, I mean I just paid for cable last month! But usually it is just so we can make sure financially it isn't going to cause a problem. Of course sometimes we give each other shite over what we are getting.

"Seriously honey? Another purse? You have a really nice Columbia one that holds a lot of stuff and looks good and works."

"This one matches my new shoes!"

But that is about as bad as it has ever been. Of course, that knife cuts both ways.

"Why did you get a knife? You already have one."

"This one is bigger. Now shutup before I punch you in the mouth again."

(Kidding. I usually don't warn her before I hit her.)

My wife has imposed a "knife allowance", much like children get when they haven't reached adulthood. :o

I'm not complaining though.
