My XBox 360 died

I had one die on me, and I swear over-heating is the issue. I used to use the Intercooler, and it does work since it alters the voltage to the stock fans to drive them (as well as the three in the Intercooler) at 12V; the stock fans only run at 5.5V if I recall correctly. The Intercooler I had was the older style with a plastic connector that cause some sort of short. Anyways, did the X-clamp mod, took off the entire casing, added fans, and nothing worked. All of those mods are supposed to prevent the RROD before it happens, not really fix it! So, I bought the Arcade version, opened her up, and guess what? They modded the heatsinks. It still ran hot, so I decided not to take any chances; I mounted one fan over each heatsink and ran it from a seperate 12V power source, and it has kept cool ever since! The heatsink never gets too hot to touch, no matter what game I run or for how long. I did forget to plug the fan in once, and a mere 15 minutes of gameplay was enough to make both heatsinks too hot to touch. That can't be good, so now I'm convinced that the fans are helping. One theory is that the motherboard heats up so much that the X-clamps cause it to warp, breaking the solder contact with the GPU & CPU chips. I believe it.

Here's what I have done to mine:
Arctic Silver 5 to CPU & GPU chips
12V fan over both heatsinks
Raised the CD drive off of the GPU heatsink
Added smaller heatsinks to the other chips
Remove the X-shaped heatsink clamps and replace them with nuts & bolts

I just have to build a casing that will contain it all, but it's running perfectly fine...

That is impressive. Its a shame that people have to do these things to fix a design flaw though. If I thought I could do that I would. Way above my head I'm afraid.

My 360 crapped out on me about 2 months after I bought it. I sent it back to Microsoft, they sent me a replacement, and I sold that one to a friend for gun money. (4" bbl Taurus 686 .357.):D After two of my friends' 360's died, and then having the same thing happen to mine, I decided I didn't want anything more to do with the hunks 'o junk.:thumbdn: I'm perfectly satisfied with my regular Xbox and a beautiful revolver. (Even if it was only $373)

i got a ps3........my lil bro has a 360....its bricked 3 times, the second time 3 days after he got it back from repair....from reliable sources i.e. not news ran by microsoft(i.e. msnbc and others) 60% failure on non falcon units.....so fixing it yourself is a great idea if you can figure out how to soder

It's an easy fix, in my opinion. It isn't that hard at all, I just used a soldering iron and a screwdriver! There are tutorials on how to open up the 360, and a 12V inverter plus two CPU fans are super cheap. I screwed the motherboard into a block of wood with nylon spacers as a standoff and to improve airflow underneath; four threaded rods with nuts spaced out at the right places keep the CD drive in the air for better flow over the heat sinks, and the red heat sinks in the pics are peel & stick. It really is simple, and great for those of us who have bought too many 360 games to turn back or voided their warranty already. That I did is nothing compared to the guys ho have installed water-cooling systems in theirs!

Well, they have a pump that circulate water or other fluid over the chip, keeping it cool... but I don't think it's necessary for the 360; if you can look at the label on the box, see if the power supply is listed as 203 watts; the newer, cooler-running systems have a 175 watt power supply and the newer chip on the mother board.

I pulled a fast one i guess you could call it that...my son's RROD so i made my call but before I complain about the xbox360's issues; I gave them the serial number and registered it with microsoft, they asked if there was anything they could help me with I said no thank you, 1 week later call back RROD problem, they look me up ,hey your under warranty, send it in and within a week i had it back,my unit no replacement and never had a problem out of it since, granted I live it TX so ship time may vary...being the service center was in Texas as well.

(( Spam, spam, glorious spam!
Spread it on bread with a dollop of jam --
eat it, then beat it,
(I'd rather not read it) --
you'll make us all happy whenever you scram! ))

I got my xbox back today. They have replaced it. The manufacture date says 1207. It doesn't have a HDMI slot, which I thought all new ones had.

It also runs quieter and has not locked up on me since (a common problem while playing Rainbow Six Vegas

Hmmm, I have had my 360 for 1 month and it has frozen twice on me when playing Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas. It has never done that with any other game.

The Nyko Intercooler has also been reported to have caused a general hardware failure in a number of consoles, as well as scorching of the power AC input.[12] Microsoft stated that the peripheral drains too much power from the console and can cause the faults to occur, [13] and stated that consoles fitted with the peripheral will have their warranty null and void.[12]

Dang I just bought one of those yesterday, I have a Pelican Vertical Fan Stand that doesn't blow air worth a crap so I figured the Nyko would be an upgrade. Thanks for the heads up on it, it's coming off for warranty purposes.

your not going to like my answer, but as a parent of a son who begged and begged to get one, and who never won, but who has a life outside his momma's basement I say this.

ITs the best thing that could happen to you. LOOSE the damn thing, get something else to do, go out, get a job, talk to live girls, read a book , hell write a book, just get your face out of the damn video game. .....

One parents point of view only.

That's not really a fair generalization of gamers. I can only speak for myself; but I do have a job, pay ridiculous apartment rent, go out on the weekends after my 50 hour work week, talk to live girls, etc and so on. Try 4 player deathmatch on HALO 3 and you'd understand;)

My replacement X-box died. Microsoft emailed me a mailing label to ship it back to them. Will they ever fix the issues? Apparently they are aware of the overheating issue.

The issue is more involved than just overheating. As I understand the problem it's a combination of rohs compliant solder, stress caused by heat and cooling cycles, and the way the internal components are secured which causes stress on some solder areas. I really do want an xbox360 myself, lots of awesome games on it. I just can't bring myself to spend until they fix the engineering causing the problem in the first place. I've heard numbers as high as 30 percent failure rate due to RROD failures.

Sorry to hear it man...that's the exact reason I bought a PS3 :D

If I didn't already have many games for it, and if they weren't "fixing" it free of charge I would get a PS3. For those that haven't bought a 360 yet, don't.

After reading this thread, Im glad I held out on buying the 360. Whats weird is that my friend bought his 360 when it first came out, in 2005. But only recently, his xbox gave out to the RROD. This was after 3 years of flawless operation. I think Microsoft need to concentrate on their QC more.
