My XBox 360 died

My son's 360 has just had its fourth repair in 18 months of ownership! 3 x RROD and some odd problem with the disk drive. Great when it works....

There are a couple of interesting articles about the X Box 360 on www.dailytech.com . It's the old battle between marketing [get it on the market fast] and engineering [make it right] !Marketing won so they took shortcuts and the failure rate is 16 % .

I guess they wanted to get it out before the PS3. Originally they were both supposed to be released at about the same time. Then something changed and Microsoft went ahead of the planned release date.

They've got pretty good at getting them fixed up here. Took ten days.

Here's and interesting read on 360 defects - http://venturebeat.com/2008/09/05/x...istory-of-microsofts-video-game-console-woes/

There is no doubt that Microsoft screwed the pooch with the 360. They would've been much better served if they had fixed the known defects before releasing the console. I know one thing, I'm done with them. When the next generation comes out, I won't be buying Microsoft.

The whole business accords with my beliefs about M$. I was quite reluctant. It was the first console I'd got for some time [preference for PC games], and the idea of allowing any more unrestrained M$ in my world than is strictly necessary didn't sit well with me. Bottom line though is that my advisors are all in the gaming industry in some shape or form, from porting developers meddling with phone games to more interesting stuff. Amongst that bunch of geeks there was clear consensus that M$ had it, not necessarily in untapped potential, but in realized potential. Ultimately, that body of developers all pointed to an industry preference for writing for the M$ box. Given that is just as important as the box itself when it comes to the gaming experience I was swayed to pinch my nose a take the leap. As a user I'm happy with the way things are currently panning out, but I doubt I'll ever escape the icky feeling. Hopefully, contestants in the future will fix that up for me.

According to microsoft my console has been shipped back. They just got it yesterday, so I'm hoping they replaced it with one that has the new chipset.

Oh, Nooooooooooooo !

This means you might have to actually interact with REAL PEOPLE !

you know..........like most adults do in the real world.....

Why do you have to insult other people's hobbies? It's not hurting you, or anyone else.

And sometimes, real people can be somewhat unpleasant. (Visit W&C for more info.)

My bad. I was trying to make a joke, that's all.

Nothing personal.

Above post has been changed.

.

Got an xbox back today. Manufactured in 2005, so i assume its a refurb. I was hoping to get one with the new chipset. Does anyone know if the refurbs have the new chip? This is my 2nd one to die. Hopefully this one will last.

I bought one about a year and half ago off of Ebay. I rented a few games for it, but didn't play it enough to buy anything. The day GTAIV came out, I bought a copy. I played it till the end of the story. A few days later the system crapped out. No RROD. It powers up, and I have sound, but no video. I haven' bothered to send it in, and I may not.

I played the PS2 a lot. I went through 4 of them. I swear they're making these systems crap on purpose. I still have my original Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Genesis, and even Odyssey. They all still work just fine.

My Xbox dies too, and I'm a pretty big gamer. I've sent it in already.
But I don't really care how unreliable it is, I still ove the thing. The games are great, and the controllers work for me, and, well, it just plain rocks.
PS3- controllers are too small.
Wii- um, not great shooting cames, haven't had good luck with Wiimote.
The one system that can rival the 360 is the Nintendo Gamecube. I've actually enjoyed playing Zelda...again, instead of Halo. Plus, the GC is indesctructable.

Edit: Off Topic, but I just noticed your sig line, Shootist. I love Rush, and that song

my familys first xbox was faulty the disk tray always got stuck so we couldnt play so we had to use a screw driver to pry it open

Everyone I know who has had a 360 has had it die on them. I had RRoD on mine but they fixed that.
My friend lost the picture on the 360 that they sent to replace his first broken one (graphics card failure?). They refused to fix the second one for free. He now has a PS3.

The 360 is an unreliable piece of crap. ..but it hasn't stop me spending two weeks of my life (24 hours a day) playing COD4 online :o
