Mythbusters: "Man, I sure love the look of that XL Vaquero/Espada/Voyager, but how will it ever fit in my pockets?" + musings on the wave

There, that does it a bit more justice. Look at the difference in those serrations! The Chaparral is the closest to the Caly series I have but I do love it so much.
I'd say I'd like a serrated Espada XL, but I don't know how good CS serrations are for actually using to cut stuff... I have a Black Talon II, but that seems like a true "use once to save your life" knife, whereas I could definitely press my Ma2 or Lil Ma into use for plenty of tasks. It's the serration pattern. I could use a Black Talon II as an EDC knife if it had Spyderco serrations, it seems so tough and strong compared to the Civvie.

I see why from you, living in a free state and all, this may seem ridiculous, too. I would just pack a pistol and call it a day, but I try to stay on the right side of the law, so... Look at your username, my man, clearly you live in a place where you can just... pack a weapon. IIRC you are/were a police officer, but I was about to say, come to my city and try to get a permit while having nothing to do with any agency, court, high-power city job and see what happens. Just trying to maybe explain why I am the way I am, not trying to change your opinion or anything. I just had that thought while admiring scdub scdub 's carry up there. I swear to you that I do not walk around like Lynn Thompson on the daily lol

I did. Then I bought one. :)

Awesome knife. Looks just like another folder in my pocket. No problems with carry, especially compared to a pistol…

Tony Macaroni, Chef Boyardee and all the saints, everything in this picture is just *chefs kiss* perfecto! Little utility blade OTF, and the white (looks white here) Talwar, ooooh boy. Admire the micro-Glock, too.

It's easier to carry than a pistol? Huh, I wouldn't have originally thought so, as that looks pretty compact, Then again, weight and all, and the Espada is truly a slim knife for what it is.

I'm never going to carry the thing, I just thought my swivel-bolster needed a friend.

Wow, I know that stiletto is just a show-piece, but jeez, 8 inches!
I do carry my fancy one sometimes, though the AUS-10A is just fine and finds its way into my pocket more often. If I do carry the fancy one, it's vertically, in this...

I like big knives. Well, big folders. Right now I have a Cold Steel XL clip point Voyager, an XL tanto Voyager, and a 4-Max Scout. One of these days I'll probably add a Rajah II... (Meanwhile, if the hosting server responds quickly enough, you might see a picture of the small collection of biggish folders below...)

I couldn't see the pic, then I click reply, and in the reply box, it's right there! That's sweet!

Oh and should probably credit the leather to Wicek Leather in Poland! They do great work on a lot of different knives.

I like big folders too but everyone has their own limit.

For me, it was the 5" Spyderco Tanaka, which I sold, but I have no problem w/the Spyderco 4.5" K2, which I still own. Also bought/sold a 5.5" Cold Steel Voyager once as well. Pocket carry was never the issue. Never bought another folder w/a blade >/= 5" again.

Are you referring to opening it up in public, or just too much blade? Yeah, of course everyone has their own preferences. Mine are certainly not this, haha. I stick to that sweet spot floating around 4" for my carries. Sometimes I will go a bit less, sometimes a bit more, and I've always got my SAK or Chaparral or something for more proper situations.

It's weird for me because it isn't strictly size that makes me apprehensive to use a blade in public. I'd use my blue Police 4 in front of people to do a task, but not my black Janich-cliffe Endura, though. I'd use my orange aluminum BD1N PM2 without hesitation but would be reluctant to use the blacked out wharncliffe version of same. Matriarch 2, it isn't the size that makes me never show that blade in public.

Interestingly enough, the 5.5” Voyager XL fits just fine in my regular shorts and pants. The 6” Rajah 2 looks ridiculous on me, sticking out like a sore thumb.

Just to add, IMO, weight is more of a concern to me than size really. The Voyager XL is pretty darn big, but the plastic scales keep the weight manageable. In contrast, the G10 and steel liners of the old school Spyderco Chinook feel a bit too heavy for shorts.

I love the XL's and carry a XL Talwar. I also got the large aluminum bolster espada and the XL non fancy espada and the Rajah -2 as well as some 4maxs. I'd like to get the fancy Espada like little fit devil's got in her video and the sheath as well. Their nice blades and well made to say the least. Some like big folders and some don't no need to get all bent on it though and be negative. I think if someone doesn't care for something they should just move along and not get involved rather than just wasting their time, that's what I do anyway. We need more XL folders. 👍

For me, it’s also more about weight rather than size too. Some time back, I was looking at a Spyderco Tatanka at the local shop and was quite surprised that such a large folder actually fit in my pants pocket. But left the Tatanka at the shop as it’s weight didn’t feel comfortable. In hindsight, I should have just gotten it as a collection piece, seeing it’s scarcity after discontinuation..
