Mythbusters: "Man, I sure love the look of that XL Vaquero/Espada/Voyager, but how will it ever fit in my pockets?" + musings on the wave

I would think the "Why would you even want that" question would not be loved around here considering the crowd, haha.

Yeah, I like big carries but my daily carries tend to run more... "Police 4, Yojumbo, Endura, Mil/PM2, Buck 110 size". I generally cap out at a little over four inches, like, the Police 4. That, actually, is one of my favorite knives, slimmer than the PM2, because it's a good emergency knife, great pocket knife, and I can actually use it out and about, whereas I would not pull even my smaller re-ground Endura because it's black and has a Janich wharncliffe - it looks like a big razor. The K390 series? Oh, girls love that teal. Can't pull that with the XL Tanto Voyager.

I only carry the XL Espada on occasion, like my fancy one horizontal on my belt in a sheath when I'm going somewhere with cool people, (carried that openly to Ren-Faire, people loved it) or a G10 in my pocket sometimes at night in coyote territory. I actually got rolled up on last night, but I managed to verbally end the encounter.

Also, your pic gives me an idea... hold on.
I think that often looking around on this website. But I don't feel the need to tell people why I don't care for their choice in a knife.

To be honest, I've never been a fan of the Tri-Ad lock. Not only that, but the Espada XL sticks out of my speedo noticeably. That and its noticeably larger than the other contents of my speedo...

And and congrats on the new childrens.

I live in a small town in the Midwest where a large fixed blade is considered a tool (think farmers and hunters) but any folder larger than a Buck 110 is looked at as a “weapon”. Go figure 🤷🏻‍♂️
These last 4 years, in part due to the ordeal I went through in the hospital, I've stopped caring what other people think. I used to be paranoid about obeying the 2.5" blade limit when I had to go into Chicago for example. I just don't give two :poop: :poop: about other people. If they have a problem that I'm using an OTF, that problem is THEIRS, not MINE.

Do I only carry a 10 round mag when I have to go into Chicago? Hell no. Happy with 14 rounds in my P365. Besides, if I have to defend myself, I don't think the fact that I was a few rounds over the limit is going to be that much of a concern.

I do need to get a large folder though. Maybe at the knife show in St. Louis.

Folders w/5-5.5" blades are just too big IMO. At that size, I prefer fixed blades.
I would carry a fixed blade... IF MY LAWS LET ME!
Nah, I don't think anyone here's gonna get that reference. But it's a true statement.

I just bought my first handmade LA-legal EDC fixed blade. When you can only walk around with a folder... like I said, it "brainwashes" you into thinking that's your only choice. So, yeah, that is the logical thing to do, what you're doing. I used to do a lot of logical things, but the law and logic don't be mixing all the time. Either way, what you're doing is the way to go. I just have a special thing in my heart for these folders.

I... get this stance, even if to some it sounds extreme, though I wouldn't put it as "I don't care about people", I certainly do. You seem like you've reached a point where you aren't concerned with, for one, the viewpoints of others, which is commendable. I've still got a lot of pesky people-pleasing in me, to the point I carry an extra knife for that reason. But I see the straightforward logic in being a peaceable man, doing peaceable things. Especially if whatever you do takes you into Chiraq, I could never begrudge those choices.

You've mentioned anxiety before, right? Yeah, I feel that. Peace of mind can mean a lot. I forgot my knife for the first time the other day, when I was already at my destination. Ooh, I was fuming, on principal. Like how people get when they forget their phone.

Thank you, and absolutely. Little girl. We decided on the name "Hope". It appeals to both my Christian side and my Star Wars side. Hahaha

That is such a sweet name!! Good luck on the journey, all the well-wishes in the world to you and your family, and hopefully once the tot has some motor skills and your money is up again, you can get an XL just for Hope 😂 Kidding, but seriously, always beautiful to see a burgeoning family! Same goes for you jux t jux t :)

Noble and needed (I cannot spell nessecary) sacrifice in the knives, good on ya. Everyone should pool together and buy this fella an XL in honor of his new family! 😁 I got 20 on it!

I appreciate that, too! I knew very well when I wrote this that plenty of people here just don't dig it. But, you're still a respectful person about it, that's what matters in my eyes!

"Why da ya need it to fold up inta yer pants? You're hiding it like an assassin or something...." I'd think is the problem. I sometimes have to wonder, are we overly concerned as knife-owners about public perception of knives? I think not, because of all the stories of gasps and "Is that from your ghetto days?!" remarks in thread about it... maybe a bit of both. I've never been confronted about a pocket knife, thankfully. Unless it was "Hey, where is yours?". That I don't mind.

Also, I think cheap stiletto association.

But never knife jiggle...
My knives don't jiggle, jiggle, they fold
I hate to see it wiggle, wiggle, for sure
Espada makes me dribble, dribble, you know
Cutting with my Cricket, you really need to see it
It's 4.75 in a compact, no slack
but luckily, the blade swings back
I got a knack to chop-chop in my mind
Buck sheath colored like reedd redd winnneeeeeee

Shoutout Louix Theroux and I deeply apologize to those of you who don't get this reference, it's Louis Theroux's rap, known it for years, it's now making the rounds on popular media, and that "never knife jiggle" comment just put me over the edge...
🤣

Not to derail my own thread, just in case anyone wanna see Louis Theroux lol he starts at 0:56
