Naked and Afraid - What would you bring?

Okay so, I've never even heard of this show until this thread.
Not big on tv so... Anyway, one question I have is this: Do knives
like the old Aitor Jungle King or the new Mora Bushcraft Survival
models count as 1 or more items? I know a lot of people are
against "survival" knifes. Especially hollow handle ones. But I
have used a Jungle King extensively. Including chopping, sawing
and batoning. Partly just to play with the knife.lol. Point is,
even though it is not the ideal edge geometry or full tang design,
it would give quite a bit of different advantages. Blade, saw,
sharpener, firesteel, slingshot(half-assed as it may be) etc etc.
Just seems like a good option. Any decent knife that had a
firesteel built in would be an awesome choice. Maybe we
could get Victorinox to work on that....

So far they've gotten 1 thing for the most part. In episode 5 the girl had a big pot with a lid, but in the 2nd episode the pot was way smaller and didnt have a lid. The knives have come with a sheath. One guy brought goggles. So I'd imagine a hollow knife with extra stuff would count as more than 1 item, otherwise it'd be stupid to not pick something like that: a knife with matches, fishing line, snare wire, etc etc. Actually a swiss army knife with a magnifying glass, wood saw, blade and other tools would be extremely handy. The saw would aid in shelter building, you could start a fire with the magnifying glass, and cut things, make traps, or prep food with the blade. I wonder if that's not allowed.

Yeah, if the Jungle King was deemed too useful/multiple items, then my next choice would be a sak.
Always a Victorinox. Probably a Swiss champ, Outrider or Outdoorsman. Something like that.
Yeah, the knife, saw and magnifier for fire would all be great.

RJM Tactical: Loggerhead

would serve as hammer, knife, axe, prybar, multiple sharp edges to.

HOWEVER, I don't believe you can start a fire with a SAK magnifying glass, especially in a humid environment. I've searched online for somebody who has done it. Anybody here ever succeeded in making more than smoke with it?

Back in the 80's, there was a short lived magazine on survival/gun stuff, that had an issue with Schwarzenegger on the cover, for an article about the Jack Crain knives in the movie "Commando". In that issue, Leroy Thompson had a great article on the Victorinox Swiss Champ, where he went through every blade/tool in the knife and tested them. He was able to start fires with the magnifier. But, it was the old style ones, not sure how well the current all plastic ones would do.

On the last episode they should have brought a fire starter instead of container.
You can easily boil water in bamboo hollows.

I've been watching the show with my fiance. It's made her curious about survival skills.
I think the "naked" aspect is partially a gimmick to get viewers but when you think about it, it really does take the challenge to an extreme. The only way things could be more extreme is if you took away the two items that they get to bring and/or make them do it alone. Clothing is protection from the elements, psychologically comforting, and incredibly useful for making survival items.
Probably the best combination is knife and large metal pot.
You have to have clean water and the best way to do that is to boil it. I guess a filter straw or something like that could be used but why not have a pot that can also be use to cook?
If you know what your enviroment is you might be able to get clean water from other ways and thus open up other item choices.
Probably the next best choice would be some type of material like hide or plastic sheeting that can be used to make containers, cordage, clothing, shelter, ect.

I don't think the challengers are allowed to use the bags for anything other than carrying the needed camera equipment. My fiance noticed that they're all wearing the same necklaces which most likely contain mics. I'm betting there is also battery packs and transmitters in the bag along with the personal camera.

I suppose one counterintuitive survival strategy with the 1 + 1 items allowed would be to forgo the knife all together and to go into an extreme energy conservation state. You bring a water filter to cut down on energy expenditure to get water and a shelter to conserve energy from heat loss during the dark hours.

It's pretty interesting how many videos there are on youtube for survival techniques. For firemaking there are a ton.

Something he calls a swedish fire torch (would need a fire steel of some sort):

Rocks for a fire:

There are tons of bow drill videos as well.

It seems like the people on the show try only 1 method. You'd think that in preparation they'd learn a dozen ways to make a fire and then try whatever one is easiest or doable given the resources in the area.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned something that should be very obvious. They are most of the time close to a beach...a genie lamp! Wish yourself a million wishes and magically a team of third world country workers show up to build your huge beach front mansion while waiting on you hand and foot and sewing your clothes out of the tears of pregnant mermaids!

Well, duh. Survival 101.

Very respectfully, I disagree. This is the filter I'm talking about: http://www.rei.com/product/653573/katadyn-pocket-water-filter More compact than the pot, and 1 lb 3 0z. If it gets clogged, you can take it apart in the field to clean it. I don't believe you can suck one gallon per day per person (42 gallons total) through a filter straw without clogging it with sediment. Why even try to do that though? Just get a real filter and chuck the filter straws. A Sawyer Squeeze >> filter straw and it's cheap and light, but I would rather have something heavier and sturdier if I really had to count on it for three weeks. I haven't seen many scenes of people boiling their food. Most are roasting it over a fire.

Some episodes have shown people who did not pick a fire starter as one of their two items, struggle to build a fire with a bow drill. Not so easy if it's raining and everything is damp, and the only wood you can find is weak and rotten, as in "Breaking in Borneo". Remember that if boiling is your only way of purifying water, as soon as your fire goes out the dehydration clock starts ticking. Think about how much wood you would have to cut to boil 42 gallons of water, one small pot at a time.

Pots can used to cook in, can be used to dig a whole in the ground, can be used to carry other objects in to include food you have collected, I would take a pot anyday over a filter straw, filter straw would be great for a Soldier or downed airman, in an E&E situation, I carried one when I was in the Army, but for the shows situations a pot would be better.

An adult size feet'e zip up pajamas.

Great idea! And cut a hole for my junk. Would not want to have defeated the naked part of the show!
