Name your favorite maker(s) and why.

Ralph Dewey Harris:

He's an Innovator, All his knives are beautifully finished. I talked to Dewey at a show in Florida about making knives and metal working. You can tell he's "into" it.

DA/OTF, Kick spring, Coil Spring, Interframe, you name it.

New projects and pics to look at !!!!

I would toss in Mike Cooper (L6Steel) and Max Burnett (MaxTheKnife). They both make very nice knives, but they also strive to make each one better than the last. They really love making knives for the sake of making them. Of course the above could describe alot of the fine makers here.

UPDATED and REVISED

Ken Onion is riding a really big wave with the Speed-safe and the Vault -Lock concepts. Kit Carson builds the absolute toughtest liner-locks on the planet. If I were headed for war,I wouldn't go without a Carson folder in my pocket. It would matter a little less what fixed blade I might carry.
Darrel Ralph is a genuous! I have had the luck to have spent some time with him and he consistently is on the cutting edge with new technology. Whatever the future is, DDR will be at the leading edge of it. The current best design for a folder goes to Deryk Munroe. His Chimura is as good as a liner-lock folder can be in style, function and materials. M. Walker,Go screw yourself!

I'd go with Ron Newton, (the late) Jimmy Lile, and Jerry Fisk. Of course I can't afford their knives, but I like the makers.

I will also somewhat reluctantly cast my vote for Tom Mayo. I say reluctantly, as you have to put up with a lot of whining if you don't buy something he has made up already. As I recall, in just one e-mail, he whined about having to get up at 0415, as his wife is a greeter at the church they attend, and they were having a sunrise service; he further bemoaned that he had to sell a prototype TNT for groceries, he got a new Australian shepherd, and broke a tap off in the Ti scales of one of his knives.

Mind you, this was without ONE WORD about the knife he was making for me!! However, the wait (I will refrain comment about the whining

) was worth it. Here is a pic of the Talonite (r) drop point hunter with black linen micarta scales he made for me. The knife he used for inspiration is below the Mayo Masterpiece: the Mad Dog Mako.

Seriously, Tom does make good stuff; I have bought three of his knives, and Tom Walz, the pres/CEO of Carbide Processors, who imports Talonite (r), is rumored to have purchased a TNT from Tom.

Walt

1. Walter Brend - great knives in his own right and nice collaborations with Microtech.

2. Ernest Emerson - CQC6 is a great tactical knife, although there is some variability in the build quality.

3. John W. Smith - I only have one of his knives, but I know I will buy more.

I could also add Larry Chew, Kit Carson and most of our moderators

Ever since the Sabenza's introduction it has been a constant companion, a daily working blade for everything around the shop as well as a competent hunting blade. Kudos, Chris Reeve.

Strider's offerings reflect a working blade that always go camping with me and sees a great deal of use. They are rugged and very well made.

Jan,
Welcome to the forums! I like my CRK Sebenza as well, but I consider them a small manufacturing shop, since Chris doesn't actually grind the blades, or anything. The slabs are CNCed, they have guys that do the grinding etc. They sure can make a knife though!

I’ll go with Jeff Harkins. His designs are truly innovative. If you’ve handled one of his trapdoor release, interframe autos you know there’s nothing else like them. The F&F is about as good as it gets too. Jeff is a great guy and a genius when it comes to machines and computers.

Check out Jeff's site.

No doubt Bill Ankrom, the man knows the mechanics of a folder better than anyone. And he does beautiful things with pearl. I have 3 pics on my site, check them out.

If Walt wouldnt be so difficult.....I wouldnt whine so much (well, I would, but I had to put that in there!) Gotta agree with some of the above.....Harkins is a genius, I guess Darrel is a genuous...whatever that is, and Bill Ankrom makes some of the most perfect knives I have ever seen.....20+ years as a tool maker....go figure!

Allen Blade comes immediately to mind.

Why? Well, lemme see...... Excellent stuff at a price that is incredible. Wonderful guy to deal with. He is also from the great state of Washington, which keeps my shipping down (heh heh). And HEY; anybody who USED to work for Mad Dog can't be all bad!

It wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit to have a piece from everybody listed in this thread so far. Good makers abound here at BladeForums.
