Nascar

I think I'm starting to get the idea ...

I should go to the rotary off Rt. 91 in Greenfield so I can see the cars go around in circles.

I should only watch the drivers who have hot wives.

I should fill up balloons with paint and throw them at the cars so they'll be more colorful.

I should bring a cooler full of beer and set up my grill in the middle of the rotary and grill some vittles -- and boil peanuts?

I think I know how to do all that except Cavelady asked me if I know how to eat boiled peanuts so there must be some trick to it. All we have here are roasted peanuts. Do you boil them still in the shell? Then what do you do with them? Should I put a kettle on the grill so I can have fresh-boiled peanuts or should I boil them up in advance and bring them already cooked?

Althought the rotary might give you the feel, to really get that paint rubbing nascar feel, go to Hartford CT and then Drive North at 5:30 PM on 91. That will definatey give you the feel.

Of course now that I'm down here in the land of boiled peanuts, nascar, waffle house, Churches outnumbering bars, I have to wtach on TV to get that thrill. The highways here just clog up and come to a halt. No more 80-90 runs with all four lanes filled bumper to bumper.

Green Raw Peanuts are boiled with alot of salt either in a vat or in your own home. The salt is what makes the flavor in the brine...any well respectful southerner has them in a kettle cooling down so you can eat them warm or cold. Have to shell them yourself though. Good with that new Pepsi w/Lime! :D

Boiled peanuts and now Pepsi with lime! Far be it from me to knock another culture's national food favourites but, suddenly, I feel a little ill ......

Some of the closest racing in memory was in the early 1960s when the formula was 1.5 liters. The engines were the Coventry-Climax V-8 and the BRM V-8 versus Ferrari's various V-6s, V-8s, & V-12's. Then, in 1964, there was the Honda V-12 turning up the unheard of 12,000 rpm. I was at Watkins Glen and you could hear the car's high pitched shriek all around the course.

In 1961, the championship race was between Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Trips, both drivers for Ferrari. It came down to the final race, the italian Grand Prix at Monza and they used the high banking. It was happened just as it was portrayed in the film, "Grand Prix". Von Trips went off the banking and was killed, leaving the Championship to Hill. The next year, 1962, the race was between Jim Clark in the Lotus 25-Climax and Graham Hill in the BRM. It went down to the final race at Kyalami in South Africa in December of 1962. Clark fell out of the race when a $0.50 bolt fell out of his engine, allowing all of the oil to run out, giving the Championship to Graham Hill.

Thanks for the history FullerH. I hate to see all the older tracks going away for the more sterile new tracks with no personality and no history, and no overtaking opportunities....despite all of this I still love F1.....

I am fearless. I am accustomed to roasted peanuts but I am not afraid to eat them boiled. I am not even afraid of Pepsi with Lime. I have left Hartford heading north on 91 at the evening rush hour and lived; since then I can fear nothing. Can I just squeeze a slice of lime into my Pepsi or do I have to buy it with imitation lime juice already in it along with the eye of newt, toe of frog, etc?

You don't have Pepsi w/Lime or Coke w/Lime in the North? Yet? You don't have any Coke with Vanilla in it either? Wow, it's really refreshing. I'll give you all the boiled p-nuts you can stand. :) :) :)

NASCAR is still my favorite form of racing but thanks gajinoz for info on Oz Super V8's they sound hot.FullerH on F1,insightful as usual especially with the history lesson.Sorry if I came off sounding closedminded.Am not.Just real excited as JR. winning first one this year was cool and exciting for me,hoping he can pull off back to backs this week.

You know, for all my yapping about fans as drivers, I'd like to go to a NASCAR race. One of my friends went with some coworkers 'cause he got a ticket for free, and didn't expect to enjoy it, but he had a blast.
I don't get being a fanatic about another person, particularly one you don't even know-I really do think that takes a "special" kind of person that I'll refrain from commenting further on, but the same holds true for other sports...and I love going to football and baseball games. Those things are a lot more enjoyable in person, IMO. Maybe a race wouldn't be that different.
I'm not going to go out of my way to go, but if the opportunity presents itself, I can see heading over to Talladega with people I know and like.

Watched Nascar for 1 full season a year ago. It was great for taking naps, besides the crashes which woke me up. I finally gave up but I still have the urge to go to Lowes, drink a Pepsi, buy a sixer of Bud and drive fast, stop by the home depot, buy a bible, wave a flag, and stick my 3 fingers up in the air for some reason. Nah j/k sorta, I can kinda understand why people like that, it's the same reason we like going to the bar and stopping at traffic accidents, it's fun.

Oh one more thing, is it rigged or am I just crazy?

Don't know if you're crazy but don't think NASCAR has sold out.

All the nuts aren't in the Planter's jar. How do you think Junior'll do on the short track this week? I hope he strengthens as prettyboy is weakening. We need someone to show the Roush [CRS on spelling ] dynasty some rear bumper. They are trying to sweet-talk Mark back into the saddle next year. Why? Total dominance complex or what?

Safe racing is the most important factor.

Uncle Alan ;) :)

Bronco, it is by no means always that way. The domination of Michael Schumacher and of Ferrari up until this year has been quite rare in F-1 history. It has more often been a dogfight for the championship right up to the last couple of races in the season and any race could be won by any of 4 or 5 people.

I'd agree with most of that, Hugh. Still, for whatever reason, it seems as though the dominance of Ferrari has merely been replaced with the dominance of Renault. I'm not knocking it though. I enjoy watching the spectacle that is F1 and I look forward to the day when their races are decided on the final lap rather than in the first lap sprint to turn 1, or at best during the final series of pit stops.

Rat,
Your posts make my brain hurt. :p I guess that's because I'm just an ol' North Florida redneck with a measley B.S from FSU and don't know any better. If your goal was to convolute me into submission...congrats, you've succeeded. :D
I'm not sure what the big deal is about turning left vs. turning right...it's just a slight variation of the same neuro-muscular function. Plus, the Cup boys do it for 6% of the season...
For the uninformed, the media created the rivalry of Gordon vs. Earnhardt. It is widely known amongst NASCAR enthusiasts that Dale had the utmost respect for Gordon and they were in fact good friends.
Dave, you might have had the funniest post of this thread.
Fuller H, stay outta our NASCAR thread...you have enough of your own F1 threads!
Just read a great synopsis of the recent msnbc expose' on NASCAR and will post a link asap. There's a lot more $ involved than most people realize.
Carry on...

Cindy lov ya mean it but boiled peanuts don't taste very good. To those who
may not know what the taste is like, think of salty boiled and mushy Chicken.

We listen to the race on MRN, that's "motor racing network" to you not very
Southern folks out there. A BBQ accompanies the race as well as perhaps
a few wagers on the outcome of the race. These races take hours, and
most of the time may be accompanied with ones favorite adult beverage
as well.

And J Gordon? puhleeze, he's done. At best a top five finish for that guy.
J. Johnson seems to have the inside track to the "NASCAR nextel cup points
leader championship" Not to many have beaten him and he almost always
manages to not DNF.

This is the best I could come up with. Guess you'll have to check the tv schedule for a 're-airing'.

Posted: Tue Jul 12, 2005 12:06 pm Post subject: nascar (gdg)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

anyone see the msnbc special on the business of nascar? the president of nascar is worth 1.3 billion dollars. hendricks motorsports inc. has 500 employees, including 30+ engineers. putting one car on the track for a year requirs approx. 7 million dollars. this only gets you tires, motors and a driver. nextel has the largest corporate sponsorship of any pro sports, 75 million! i believe they said that when a corporate sponsor announces that they have signed a deal with a team their stock usually rises 20% immediately. wish i could remember more stats. it was a very eye opening story.

OwenM, If you live in AL, by all means go to Talladega...if possible visit the infield. It will be an experience like nothing you've ever seen. I think you will have a blast, but you'll have to decide that for yourself.
For people who don't know, attending a NASCAR race is all about the total experience, not just the racing. It's all great and you'll most likely meet the most interesting, down to earth and friendly folks you've ever come across.
Proceed...

Fixer27,
Gordon is the Hendrick team mate of, as well as the owner of Johnsons car. Gordon has 4 Cup championships and 60+ Cup wins to Johnsons 0 and <10 respectively...
Why do you think JJ is faring so much better than JG this year? And why do you think Gordon is "done" considering the 'anomoly' that is his last 5 races compared to his track record throughout his career?
Uncle Alan, etc...feel free to chime in.
Carry on...

When I say "done" I mean done for this yrs cup. And I also must mention
that for the most part JJ is winning those races without drafting help from
Mr. Gordon. As a matter of fact normally when JJ wins Gordon is nowhere to
be seen. J Gordon's way of winning was constant adjustment of his car. He
just has not been the same since his crew chief left.

Fixer27,
You are absolutely correct in your assessment of Gordons success... he is a master at deciphering what adjustments need to made to his car from behind the wheel.
Not to try and split hairs here, but 'drafting' only comes into play at Daytona and Talladega and they only make up 4 of 36 races of which just 3 of them have been run up to this point.
Gordon has won 3 races this year vs. 2 for Johnson. Evrenham has been gone for 5 years now and all though Gordons success hasn't been quite what it was he still has a Cup championship and tons of wins since.
Let me say I have never been a Gordon fan, but everytime I count him as down and out, he always comes back to throw it in my face...he is too good a driver. I still say his recent slump is an anomoly and fully expect him to mount a strong charge to the finish.
Lest you forget, whichever drivers make the Chase have the points 'reset' for the final 10 races so all are within 100 points of each other for the final push. If Gordon makes the Chase, it would be foolish to count him out.
Being a pessimist here...Go "Smoke" #20!...

Little boiled p-nuts you can just chew it all up and sometimes have to spit the hull out of your mouth, we like those big Goobers, man that's got some meat in a boiled p-nut! I met Kyle Petty at Winn Dixie and stood in line to get his autograph a long time ago...heck, he just yawned and when he stood up I made sure to look at his drivers pad. Flat as a pancake! I do wish he'd win a race some time though and I don't even like Mello Yellows. God, where is the debutante school I need! This is off track but I've seen enough Mello Yellow bottles and chew lined up on a retail outdoor counter with knives, reels, scopes in the cases and the customers waiting on their hunting and fishing license...dang all that spittin', sounds like a distant turkey shoot. Stop spittin' on my counter. :barf: :barf: :barf:

The Roush Fords are strong and I think Mark will be there next year, consider the money they'll throw at him and I'm sure he'll want a shot at a Championship.JR. gotta' be psyched after last week.In one interview before the race he was asked about his car and replied it was just OK,pretty good but there were some better cars,(not verbatim, but you get the point),out there.I hope Smoke and JR. hook up this week if they do I think they'll drive to the front, barring crashes.Who knows.I don't!As far as "pretty boy" Gordon,he is definitely getting a reality check this year. Here's hoping for a great and safe race.
