  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Nastiest thing you've managed to eat while out and about?

I've eaten quite a bit of "odd" food, over the years. Various bugs, larvae, etc. Most of those werent really that bad, some (ants, for example) are actually quite good and have a zesty, "citrus" taste to them.

On the island trip with Joezilla, I eat some raw shrimp fresh out of a clam bed. It mostly tasted like salt, but the texture was pretty bad. Mushy, gritty, salty... wiggles around a bit in the mouth. The clams themselves werent that great, either. We had some type of plant that grew on the shore and tasted just like saltwater. It wasnt that bad, in small amounts, but given enough and it would start to make you gag.

Most of the things I dislike do not come from flavor, they come from texture. Brains, for example, are not that appealing to me. Certain other organ meat (kidneys, liver, etc.) also do not always sit well with me.

During SERE training, I got to try quite a few wild, delectable snacks!!! Snakes, grubs, grasshoppers, earthworms, ants......and there are a few others that I don't care to remember!! In a survival situation, you'll eat anything edible that you can get your hands on regardless of taste, smell or grossness level!!

I can't get my friends to try deer organ meats which I find delicious. Never tried brains (with that cervid brain disease thing, don't think I will), but I like the liver and especially the hearts. As for gag factor, grubs probably, though you can hardly find a food higher in nutrition and the taste isn't bad at all. I found out that you can maintain or actually gain weight on thse things if you eat enough of them. Snake meat isn't bad, though most won't try it either. I don't like raw fish, though I have eaten it. Periwinkles have some gag factor, but if cooked aren't bad. I tried those after finding midden piles of the shells in dry caves where early NA's had feasted on them.

In various military survival schools I've eaten some pretty weird (to me) stuff. All kinds of grubs, worms, bugs, etc. Snakes, which I don't consider weird, are pretty good, actually. In various 3rd (4th? 5th?) world cultures I have eaten things provided by indigenous personnel that I couldn't even identify... and I think it's better that I couldn't.

Oh, and then there was that incident with someone else's ex-wife, but we're not going to talk about that.

Darkling beetle larvae. Grasshopper.

About larvaes/slugs: They taste much better roasted than boiled. Roast them on hot rocks.

Just tell yourself it's better for you than a Big Mac.

Did a jungle survival school a while back. We ate goat. By that I mean every part of it. I particularly did not like the penis and testicles I got to eat. My friend had the eyes and another mate ate the brain.

I have been to southeastern China, and ordered food off the menu that the chinese themselves winced at, and liked it fine.

The worms are something I'd have to be awfully hungry to try. Other than that I'd give most of those listed here a chance.

I've had lizard on a survival camp once. I can very much recommend roasting instead of boiling. Boiled lizard sucks.

I have had ants and those did have a sort of lemony/citrus taste. Do all ants taste like that or just certain varieties??

Carpenter Ants, Wolf Spider, Snakes, Frogs, Rabbit...you get the picture, if I am hungry its on the menu.

I don't even care about survival, I just like to have an expanded pallate ; )
