Native 5 - the perfect pocket knife?

I just received a Native 5 lightweight S110V today. WOW!

First of all, let me tell you what I was looking for. I have somewhat large hands and wanted a 4 finger pocket knife that would also fill my palm, all the way to the heel of my hand. There are lots of big, heavy knives that qualify.

But, I wanted it to be as small and lightweight as possible, while fulfilling the requirement above.

It didn't need a camp knife, capable of chopping down a tree. Just the odd task around the office and inside the home. A somewhat smallish blade, without being tiny would do. Oh, and a sharp enough point to pierce plastic packaging, while not being so pointy as to be delicate.

Finally, why not as maintenance free as possible, stainless & seldom in need of sharpening.

BINGO! Native 5 Lightweight in S110V.
For me, it is indeed the perfect knife fitting these criteria.
Like I said, WOW!

The Native is arguably Spyderco's best small knife design. Better than the Delica in my opinion.

I just got the 5 in 110V, the nicest in my long acquaintance with the Native line.

I'm a native of the Bronx myself, so I appreciate the tough but sleek design of this flagship Spyderco. Go out and get one !!!

:D

My third Native arrived today, how ironic. First one I believe is a 2 or 3. Second is the Blue S110V, and todays arrival is the S35VN. The Native is gaining an edge on the Delica for pocket time.

Would someone measure the distance from the pommel/end of the knife handle to the finger guard on the handle (not on the blade) for me? I want to see if this knife will fit my large hand without using the choil.

I can just use a Delica but a Caly3 requires the use of the choil for all 4 fingers.

3.320"

For me, the genius of this design is the choil. Going back to my criteria of the smallest 4-finger knife, the choil is part of the handle. And that part folds, making the closed knife smaller!

I don't like choils on my big camp knives. There's no benefit.

I've added some pictures with the knife in my hand. I need the choil to get all my fingers firmly on the knife. Someone with small hands could skip the choil. By the way, holding the knife while using the choil is extremely comfortable.

i fell in love with the natives when i came aboard with spyderco about 4 years ago,and own 7 of them now,i an still looking for that carbon fiber S110V) version to add though!always have one of these in my pocket, next up is my caly 3 also one of the best little EDC's to come down the pike!both of these fit my large hand like a glove, the native's are spyderco's classic design.

Anyone know exactly how long the handle is on the Native 5 G10? I know what the specs are online, but some of my Spydercos are a bit shorter. The lightweight Native in the photo in this thread looks like it is 3 7/8" or so, perhaps a 1/16" longer.
I actually prefer my knives to have handles a little under 4" or so.

There's one available on the Exchange.

I just compared a LW to a G10 and they look like the same length to me.

EDIT: I just measured a G10 & two LWs with a dial caliper and they were all approx. 4.006. The ends are radiused so it's hard to get a consistent measurement. I'd say they're all 4" for practical purposes.
