I have a B-day coming up and I am interested in getting a NATO bottle. I was wondering if any of you have had experience with them. I have seen aluminum and plastic bottles but don't know which one is better. Any opinions would be appreicated. Thanks

A 1 quart GI canteen, I think. He's asking aluminum or plastic. I always like aluminum, because I can heat it. Plastic are cheaper and lighter though. The aluminum ones also don't get dented if you drop them. I think all the aluminum ones here are very old, like Vietnam era. And I'm not sure if the aluminum ones can use the current cap designed for the gas mask, not that it is important to most civilians.

but the problem with some metal bottles is that it can heat up the water. But the nato cup comes with a cooker + a metal cup.

I think plastic NATO bottle is standard issue in the UK army.
Many brits use it for hiking, and they seem happy with it.

I have the NATO 58 pattern water bottle with metal mug, and I really like it. The problem with it is it is very expensive, get the US Army canteen and cup from actiongear.com and save your self $20-30 bucks.

I use the US Army canteen, cup, and stove sleeve and I`m very happy with it. Mac

Take a look at the Olicamp Space Saver cup too, if you are going with a Nalgene. They are cheap, and are made to slide onto the bottom of a 1 quart Nalgene. Ebay and campmore have them.

I have and use the Vargo Ti cup below, it fits perfectly under a nalgine bottle. great to cook with. but my main cooker now has been the Jetboil, there awesome and super fast!

After watching the Bear shows. This is one of the two things i picked up from him... I got 2 of the NATO alum canteens with the cups. I paid for each $7. I like the set up and im thinking about getting 2 more as they are getting hard to find. Its well build and it sure has its place in a BOB.

2dog my question was if the NATO Bottle, GI Canteen, Crusader, whatever its called if its actually any good. I have heard good things about them but wanted to know if it was true and see what experience you guys have had with them. Hope this clears up my ambiguous question

Aquacopter, they are great for their intended purpose, which is holding water. I personally prefer a Camelbak and maybe some Nalgenes because of their bacteria inhibiting properties, but the canteens will hold water just as well. The metal one with the cup on the bottom seems like a good way to go, and can be picked up cheap at any army surplus store.

For experience, I used one of the GI canteens for several years of scouting, and I am still alive, if that counts for anything.
