NATO bottle

I admit to being old fashioned but I still think that the GI 1qt canteen, cup, and stove/stand all nested together inside the canteen pouch is one of the best solutions for compact, simple water carrying and cooking.

I second the USGI canteen w/cup and stove. I have heard the nato ones are akward to carry. I have used one for along time and every now and a agian I'll used the nalgene bottle with a cup.

Those Jet Boils are the heat. I wanna get one before my next trip.

You wont regret it. I got mine 3 years ago when they first came out. Boils water faster than anything I've ever used, and sips the fuel. Pass on the "jetboil" fuel though, I use the snowpeak fuel instead. The snowpeak is half the price and a bit larger, still fits inside. The hanging kit is handy for winter camping and climbing. The piezo isn't super durable though, mine cracked on my last trip, so I need to bring it back to REI and get a new piezo.

third for the jetboil.

if you get one system, you can get the other accessories for to go with it.

eg, buy the personal system, and add the two person pot, it uses the same base. i have both.

when im camping i boil in the larger pot, then make coffee in the personal cup. i tried doing both in the cup, but it gets so hot you can touch the lip for a while.

Fourth for Jetboil. Works great. No problems with it, pretty compact, very adjustable flame.

5th Jetboil, but forget paying full price!

I got both my Jetboil PCU(personal cooking unit) and the Group pot at a REI garage sale. Nothing wrong with either of them, and got them for more than 50% off retail.

Everyone seams to be prone to modern high tech. heres my new canteen. I grew it in the yard.

Looks like a bullroarer. They are swung on a cord and make a roaring sound. They are used by Austrailian Aboriginal and Native American people too.

He left out his loincloth :)

must be a Bull Roarer, I thought it was a Rabbit stick at first.

Good kit!

The canteen is a gourd, the inside is coated with bees wax that I harvested.
The thing on the right is in fact a bullroaer. they were used in more places in the world than Australia. Mine was copied from the Hopi.
My picture taking skills still leave a lot to be desired. There is actually a nice design burned in to the bullroarer. It is a hide in the back ground. Seams to make a good color contrast for the pictures. I made both the knives in this pic. but some how I slipped up and put a Cold Steel hawk in there.

I have a B-day coming up and I am interested in getting a NATO bottle. I was wondering if any of you have had experience with them. I have seen aluminum and plastic bottles but don't know which one is better. Any opinions would be appreicated. Thanks

Highly recomended!

I have had a "NATO" bottle for 40 years, and it is still going strong!
I was issued it 1967, and it comes with a canvas pouch.
The bottle is not for heating!

It is great for a 'brew up' when you are on the trail.
We were issued the old solid fuel stoves with the noxious fumes!
So we would stop, and within 5 minutes we would have tea with tubed condensed milk.

Afterwards, I always carry it for backpacking.
You don't have to open your cooking gear.
A couple of twigs and you have enough of a fire to heat your water.
Throw in the coffee or tea and you have a large mug of hot drink.

BUT BECAREFUL !!!
You will burn your lips if the cup has not cooled enough!!!

The cup is also good for cooking.
I only carried the Optimus Hunter gasoline stove that came with a cooking lid.
I used it as my second cooking container for boiling water, or keeping food warm wrapped in a small thin camping mat (like a haybox).

Not hi-tech!

"You will burn your lips if the cup has not cooled enough"

Yup. I've seen after market rubber rands available for the mugs. That's an invaluable lip cushion if you are going to brew up in them.
