NATO Water Bottle

I've seen lots of folks around here with them (in pics). Seems like the GI combo would be a lot cheaper, though. (5-8$, without belt holder, for canteen and cup).

Nope, but I just got a Nalgene bottle that nests in a cup. I love it! I also have a tin can alcohol stove that I made and used it to make coffee and soup while hunting Wisconsin last week.
I got mine off e-bay.

those nato bottles look pretty nice, i think i've seen bear grylls use them on his tv show.

i usually just pick up whatevers available locally at surplus stores.

i picked up a usgi 1qt canteen and canteen cup for 10 bux canadian.

a cover and canteen stand for 15 bux, and a trangia mini for 14 bux.

total kit weighs nothing and i can happily boil water on it for a brew or boiled water for mre's.

the trangia isnt necessary as i've been able to bring the cup to a boil using wood but the wood leaves alot of soot on the cup.

trioxane fuel tabs work as well but a box of 3 over here costs 2.99 and for 3.99 i can get a bottle of methyl hydrate which is cheaper and lasts longer.

cheers

You can find an older generation of that combo in any military surplus store for a fraction of the price.

If you buy that nato bottle, then you're going to have to buy Bear's 700 dollar knife, after that, how far can you be from drinking elephant dung?

I have been using the British canteen and cup for over 20 years now, first in aluminum and later in steel. They are very nice and I prefer them over the US versions. The US military is now issuing the Nalgene bottle in plastic and stainless steel with either an aluminum or stainless cup depending on the branch of service. I looked for but never found one the od Nalgene wide mouth canteens. The clear (dark) Nalgene is a better choice anyway because of the markings. There are several cups in SS and titanium that fit Nalgene or Kleen Kanteen bottles.

I really like mine better than the US version, but I havn't found a good way of carrying it. There is not a canteen cover available like with the US version.

You can get a case for the NATO bottle, but it doesn't fit it in the same way the US one does. I live in the UK, but have always preferred the US design, I have 2 I bought in 1978, and they're still going strong despite tons of use. :)

Saw a nice oval Sigg bottle and nesting aluminium cup in a store today.

I'm with Badge Nalgene and a cup....

I use a couple of these but I'm not sure what to say - they are water bottles, they are solid, they do they job

They seem to come in two grades, NATO issue and a cheaper clone. For the price difference you are better with the proper ones as they fit snug into the cup whereas the clone rattles around.

I threw the cup tops away as the crusader cup canteen makes them redundant. The crusader cup is a useful bit of kit, the cooker unit a waste - just use a fire. They also do a handy cup hanger which is essentially just a strip of sprung steel that clips over the lips of the cup for hanging over a fire and a lid for the cup. The cup lid is crap as it's plastic and just melts in a fire: there's a member over on BushcraftUK who knocks out metal lids which are far superior. There's a couple of companies (Viper, Webtex, BCB etc) make modular pouches for the bottles if you don't want to carry them in a rucksack pocket.

I also have a widemouth nalgene but that's reserved for emergency peepee and so another plus for me for the nato bottle is that it's a completely different shape and not confusable with a nalgene :barf:

Badge54, nice link, fill that bottle with some essential survival gear and you have an outstanding piece of gear.

Or put all your eggs in one basket and go with the guyotdesigns backpacker 32oz stainless steel bottle. You can drink, boil water, cook soup, etc.. (I know they were out of stock a few days ago and are suppose to get more in soon)

They have stainless steel threads, only the cap is plastic. I have boiled water in it on a stove, fire and used a propane torch as well.
