NATO Water Bottle

Yeah, I've ordered from them in the past. For international, it was fast delivery and good communication.

Skam you are correct in stating that hydration bladders see almost unversal use however the military stiil finds a need for a canteen and are switching to SS and plastic Nalgene bottles both with cups.

What use is that? Hydration bladders also have the advantage that they don't slosh when not completely full, unlike canteens, which can make quite a lot of noise.

I like the NATO bottle. The cup and cooker base it comes with are nice.

I often take a small camelbak but still like to keep a bottle + cup. Which is the USGI one.
The bottle is mainly used for purifying water or for cleaning stuff. Once or twice the bottle combo helped in collecting water.

I ordered the nato bottle and crusader cup from bestglide, I am pleased with the product and the service.

Another possibility is the Swiss canteen now showing up on the surplus market. The canteens are made by a subsidiary of BMW and they come with an aluminum cup. $3.95. To see a picture, you can go here and click on suplus and scroll down a bit. I can tell you that they don't impart a taste to water left in them for days.

Personally i would go for something with a wider mouth if you're planning on wearing it on your belt under Arctic conditions. It's often hard to break the ice layer if your knife is wider than the mouth. And if the ice layer is thick enough, a thin stick will not necessarily do the job.

I think the traditional answer is to carry it upside down - so the ice forms on the bottom. 'Course, if it freezes solid it would be good if it was metal so you could put it over heat.

That's a great idea. It's just that I've spent too much time in the military and can't think beyond the Norwegian military canteens we used with wide mouth - which I still use. Unfortunately, they wouldn't fit the cover upside down.
