Navaja is out

Having just gotten one, I can confirm what Sal says. The noise is just not loud enough to be a concern; except maybe in a library or nursery ;)

or any liberal college populated by sheeple :D. I realy like the shape and look of the knife but not enough to draw attention to myself here because of noise

bh49, I may be one of those special people who EDCs a Najava too. Looking forward to getting mine tomorrow if UPS delivers on time.:p

Lucky you. I hope to get mine by Friday. Just cannot wait.

Got mine last night around 7PM. I don't understand why the UPS guy didn't just ring the bell or knock on the door...It would have avoided for the package to sit on my front steps under the rain for 20 minutes or so...

That said, the knife looks great, feels great (most beautiful CF ever, by the way), fit and finish is superb and like Catamount123 said the carraca noise is VERY subdued. You can truly barely hear it, in all honesty I thought it'd be way louder than that.

This knife has instantly become my favorite Spyderco.

I wish I could magically transport one of mine to you (I ended up with 2 due to a pre-order I'd kind of forgot about). It's a beautiful knife and the carraca is certainly not too loud. For those who complained about the noise effect (I respect Sal's point about the use of the term hater), I'd encourage you to try one and then make up your minds.

Congrats. I am expecting my on Friday, I hope shutdown will not effect deliveries.

With Spyderco forum help I found this blog. And Schemmp's Navaja looks pretty much like Albacetena (right colomn, second from the top)

Thank you bh49,

you will be very pleased with the Navaja...hang in there, Friday is just a couple of days away...I bet you'll love your new knife!

Thank you for the link with the various Navaja types (I promptly bookmarked it and saved the pic for future reference). However, I think the Spyderco Navaja
is basically a modern version of the "Lengua de vaca" (if my Spanish is still decent, that should mean "Cow's tongue"), rather than the Albacetena.
Well, at least that's my opinion. In any case, it surely gives one heck of a blow to the assumption of that guy that was saying that the Spyderco Navaja was not a Navaja at all.

One last thing: I know this is the Spyderco section...but seen that we are talking about ethnic designs, I would like to point you guys to another design that is very
striking, cool and brand new. I am talking about the Emerson Gipsy Jack. Mine arrived today straight from Emerson and it's one heck of a knife. Check it out! :)

Nice pics and info, guys. Mine should be arriving tomorrow, and I have a feeling it's immediately going to join the ranks of my favorite Spydercos.

Did any of you guys notice scratches on the SS bolsters when your Navaja arrived?

Thanks in advance.

I finally got mine and love everything: the blade, ergos, the look, the sound. The knife is amazing. Certainly belongs to my top three along with original C83 Persian and Caly3.5.
Outstanding job by Ed Schempp and Spyderco.:thumbup::thumbup: Thank you.

mine has couple absolutely minor, it will get more anyway.
Enjoy the knife

Got mine today and I'm really happy with it. Fit and Finish is excellent! Thumb flicked it open with ease right out of the box. The liner lock was a little stiff but I care more about my knife opening quickly and secure, I'm not in a rush to close it.
I love Ed's designs and appreciate that he isn't afraid to put his own spin on his knives. If I wanted an exact copy of a certain style, I'll buy one, I don't want that though. I wanted another Spyderco Schempp so that's what I got. Thanks Sal and Ed, I love it!

Yes... some very small ones. But, nothing compared to the scratches I'm going to end up with from carrying it! ;)

I'm fairly new to the Spyderco scene. Only been "collecting" for about a year. The Navaja was #42 for me. But, based on what I've seen and experienced, the Navaja has got to rank near the top of the coolest and nicest knives ever made by Spyderco.

I guess that I miss the point of the design, also. If it does not do anything other than make a clicking noise, why design it that way?

My impression is that it is part of the overall homage for this knife in the ethnic series.

For me a knife that makes this much noise just isnt a good EDC folder.

Concerned me a tad too, but the sound is very subtle. Less than a socket ratchet.
I doubt anyone will notice it but the user.

+1 It really is extremely nice. And they used my favorite CF. :D
:thumbup:Thank you Sal and ED!

I posted a closeup review of the Navaja on youtube. Link

Let me know what you guys think!

John

Nicely done.

I also found the lockbar a bit hard to disengage with the pad of the thumb. There's minimal exposure and I seem to have to put a lot of pressure on it, even with the jimping.
However, if I "hook" the lockbar with my thumbnail, just behind the pointed area on the bolster, its much easier to disengage.

I was thinking a really nice touch to this knife would be jeweled bolsters. Would look great and minimize the scratch issue some folks seem to have had.

A good firm lock bar is safer. That is a good thing not a bad thing. After seeing the video review by JohnDoeSlo, I like this knife even more. I must admit I do like the gentle clicking sound but the clicker it is not for everyone. I like the the full flat grind and the thick spine on the blade. The grip is solid from what I see and would fit my medium hands. The lock bar as far as I am concerned is everything it should be. I disagree with the suggestion that some material be removed from the bolster to make unlocking easier as it would make accidental unlocking when gripping very tightly more likely.

In view of all of this I have to conclude that this knife is overall, with the exception of the clicker, is designed with function over form in mind. The mild clicking is something that I can live with and maybe even enjoy.

In NYC I am still allowed to look at pictures of it these days.
